Transmigration:The Villain Wants A Happy End Without His BeastHusbands-Chapter 136: How Many Husbands Do You Think I Have?
Su Ningyan moved quietly through the corridors of the inn, the soft, distant music echoing faintly through the halls.
It was... too calm. Almost unnaturally so.
He frowned slightly.
Did they rent out the entire place? it wouldn’t be surprising.
Still, his thoughts drifted.
He needed to leave the phoenix clan soon. With Lan Meishan.
But something told him that Yan Wuhen wasn’t going to let that happen so easily.
Ningyan exhaled softly and nearly bumped into someone.
The beastwoman stepped back immediately, bowing quickly. "I’m so sorry, young master. I didn’t see you."
Ningyan waved his hands at once. "No, no.. it’s fine. Really. We’re both fine."
He offered her a small smile.
She blinked. Then her face flushed red, clearly startled by it.
Ningyan didn’t think much of it. "I’m looking for my husband," he said casually.
She froze. "...Your husband?"
Her eyes lit up. "...Which one?"
Ningyan blinked. "...Which one?"
He stared at her. "How many husbands do you think I have?"
The beastwoman’s face turned even redder.
"The divine beast princes," she blurted out. "All three of them."
Ningyan: "...?"
"They’re all anyone is talking about in here," she continued quickly, clearly excited now. "That you’re married to all of them. You’re so lucky! they’re powerful, handsome, and you—"
She looked him over, almost in awe. "You’re... ethereal."
Ningyan’s lips parted slightly.
She leaned in a little, lowering her voice. "Is it a secret marriage? There’s no news outside. A phoenix and three divine beast princes... it sounds like a story."
Ningyan took a slow step back. "...Heh."
His expression tightened. "I am not—"
"Are you in mourning?" she suddenly asked.
Ningyan blinked.
She looked him up and down, her expression shifting into concern. "You’re dressed like... well... not quite, but... you resemble someone I’ve seen in portraits."
Ningyan’s discomfort became obvious now as he stepped back again. "...Why would I be in mourning?"
She finally seemed to notice his unease.
She stopped moving closer. Cleared her throat and muttered something under her breath, half embarrassed, half scolding herself.
Then straightened.
Her expression turned professional. "...My apologies. I just.. The phoenix clan leader... the manor..."
Ningyan stilled. "...What about it?"
Her voice lowered. "...Everyone was killed last night."
Silence.
Ningyan’s eyes widened. "...What?"
This time he stepped forward.
The beastwoman immediately shook her head, turning away. "I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said anything—"
"Wait!" Ningyan immediately hurried forward, blocking her path. His arms spread wide.
"You can’t just say something like that and leave." He lowered his hands slowly, his breathing uneven. "...Tell me what happened."
The beastwoman blinked at him, clearly startled. "I—I’m just a staff here. I only heard—"
"Just speak." The frustration in his voice made her pause.
She studied him for a second then relented. "...There was a battle at the clan manor."
A brief hesitation. "Clan Leader Qin Linhua provoked someone powerful. And... they were wiped out. All of them."
Ningyan stood still. Completely still.
"The ceremony has already been done," she added quietly. "They were laid to rest before dawn."
His fingers twitched slightly at his side.
...He had let them go.
So who.. Who killed them? And why... Why did he feel... relieved?
His brows drew together faintly.
It wasn’t right. It shouldn’t feel like this.
Maybe it was because he hadn’t done it himself. Because he hadn’t become like the original Ningyan.
But that didn’t make it better. If anything, it made it worse. Because whoever had done this... might come for him next.
"...Who buried them?" he asked suddenly.
The beastwoman frowned slightly, thinking. "I heard... It was a phoenix."
She glanced at him again. "But it’s just rumors. No one is allowed near the manor right now."
Ningyan exhaled slowly. "...Thank you."
He turned to leave, then stopped. "...Wait."
She turned back, surprised. "Yes?"
"I’m looking for Lan Meishan." He gestured toward his face. "He wears glasses."
Recognition flashed across her expression. "Oh! Him."
She smiled. "He left not long ago. Said he was going to get herbs in the city."
Su Ningyan exhaled slowly. So... Lan Meishan had only just left.
"...Thank you." Ningyan gave a small nod before turning and heading toward the balcony.
A second later, he jumped.
Wind rushed past him as he dropped from the height, landing lightly on the ground below.
He straightened and glanced up at the sky.
Noon. Plenty of time.
He could go back to the manor himself and find out what exactly had happened.
He moved toward the shade of a blossom tree, pacing once... twice... before stopping and leaning back against the trunk.
Thinking. Too much thinking.
He needed to avoid trouble. That much was obvious.
If the rumors were true... if it really was a phoenix. His thoughts immediately went to Yunyi.
His jaw tightened. No.
He wasn’t doing that again. No more trust. No more softness. He had learned that lesson the hard way.
But... What if it wasn’t a phoenix? His fingers curled slightly at his side. What if he ran into whoever killed them?
A chill crept up his spine as a worse thought followed.
What if... it was the Lans?
"...I’ll go." He pushed himself off, turned and froze.
Nine tails unfurled behind the tree like blooming flames. Then Yan Wuhen leaned out from behind the trunk, head tilted slightly, red-gold eyes gleaming with amusement.
"What are you thinking so hard about, Yan’er?"
Ningyan gasped, stumbling back a step. "What is wrong with you?!"
Wuhen blinked innocently. "I was cultivating."
Ningyan stared at him. "...Behind a tree? Of course."
Wuhen smiled. "Good scenery. Reminds me of the academy. Just a bit."
Ningyan: "..."
He turned away with a scoff. "Go on, then."
He had barely taken a step when a presence closed in.
Wuhen was suddenly in front of him. Close. Very close.
Ningyan stumbled back instinctively, his spine hitting the tree behind him. Trapped.
Wuhen leaned in, caging him in with ease, his smile widening just enough to reveal the sharp edge of his canines.
His tails swayed lazily behind him. Eyes locked, studying Ningyan. "Something is bothering you."
He cocked his head. "Is it the crystal?"
