Chapter 157: Our Husband

The rest of the journey passed in silence.

Su Ningyan had fallen asleep again, his body still weakened from the poison, curled securely in Lan Meishan’s arms. His breathing was soft, steady.... alive.

That alone held the space together.

Jun Haoxuan did not speak.

Lan Meishan did not either.

They did not look at each other. Not after that moment.

The air between them had shifted, tight, aware and heavy with something neither of them chose to name.

So they remained still. And the carriage rolled on.

The Azure Dragon Clan revealed itself slowly.

First, the mountains.

Then mist.

Then a city carved into power itself. 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶

Pagodas rose in elegant tiers, their curved roofs glistening with dew. Vast forests stretched between structures of jade and gold. A distant volcano loomed, its presence steady and ancient, while beyond it, the ocean breathed against the cliffs in a slow, endless rhythm.

Dragons moved across the sky. Not hurriedly or chaotically. They glided, their massive forms cutting through the clouds with quiet authority.

Below, the clan thrived orderly and refined.

Every structure bore the sigil of the Azure Dragon, etched into stone, woven into banners, embedded into the very spirit of the land.

The carriage crossed a long wooden bridge suspended over mist-veiled depths.

Guards were already in position waiting and watching.

As it passed through the gates and into the inner compound, the vast, elevated, untouchable palace came into full view.

The carriage came to a stop.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

Then Jun Haoxuan lifted his gaze. And Lan Meishan met it.

Ten seconds with no hostility or warmth, just awareness.

Then the carriage door slid open and the moment ended.

A dozen guards dropped to one knee instantly. "We welcome Your Highness."

Jun Haoxuan stepped out.

In an instant, everything about him shifted.

The beast from the carriage was gone. What remained was the composed untouchable Azure Dragon Prince.

Every movement was precise, every breath measured. Even the damp air seemed to settle around him instead of against him.

He glanced once across the courtyard taking everything in and spoke. "Have my siblings returned from Wind City?"

The guards lowered their heads further, the weight of his presence pressing down like an unseen tide.

"Princess Jun Shengyi has returned, along with her cubs. Prince Jun Shenzhen, however, has not been seen since you all departed for Wind City."

Jun Haoxuan made no comment. His brother had always been like that. Untethered, wandering as he pleased.

"Very well." He stepped forward without pause.

Behind him, Lan Meishan emerged from the carriage, Ningyan still asleep in his arms.

The guards stiffened.

For a brief moment, their composure fractured at the sight of the Abyssal Serpent prince and of him holding someone so carefully, so possessively.

But training prevailed.

They bowed deeply and were respectful.

Meishan gave a small nod in acknowledgment before following Jun Haoxuan, his steps quiet, never once adjusting his hold on Ningyan.

Together, they ascended the palace steps.

The Azure Dragon Palace stood in layered brilliance with azure stone veined with silver, edged in gold.

Statues of dragons coiled through every carving. Every pillar. Every archway. Alive in stillness.

Mist clung low to the ground, the scent of rain heavy in the air, while distant roars echoed across the vast expanse of the clan.

Servants arrived almost immediately, robes sweeping the polished floors as they bowed.

"Welcome back, Your Highness," one of the attendants said, her voice soft, composed. "How was your time outside seclusion?"

Jun Haoxuan paused briefly. Then, a faint smile touched his lips.

"...Eventful." It was the only word he offered yet it carried weight.

The servants’ gazes shifted curiously, lingering on Lan Meishan and on the unconscious figure in his arms.

Jun Haoxuan noticed. "I trust you are all aware of who Lan Meishan is," he said calmly.

The space stilled.

"He will remain under my protection. And he will be treated with respect due to his status."

He paused deliberately, his eyes straying to Ningyan’s peaceful face. "And the one he carries is Su Ningyan, our husband."

Complete silence fell. Even the air seemed to still.

Swift, restrained, but undeniable shock flickered across every face.

Their dignified prince who had just emerged from seclusion had returned... married.

They all bowed again, deeper this time. "As you command, Your Highness."

They proceeded through the palace, through winding corridors and towering halls, until they reached Jun Haoxuan’s private chambers.

A bath was prepared without delay.

Lan Meishan handled Ningyan himself. He did not allow another to assist.

Outside those walls, the storm broke.

Servants whispered. Guards exchanged glances. Information spread like wildfire through dry grass.

By the time the hour turned, the entire palace knew. Jun Haoxuan and Lan Meishan were married to a phoenix. Su Ningyan.

Later that evening....

The chamber prepared for Lan Meishan remained untouched. He did not enter it. Instead, he stayed in Jun Haoxuan’s private chambers.

A low table sat between them, laden with delicate dishes and steaming tea. The faint scent of herbs lingered in the air, blending with the cool, refined atmosphere of the Azure Dragon Palace.

Lan Meishan poured himself tea, his movements precise, almost mechanical. His fingers curled around the cup as he brought it to his lips.

He paused. His eyes widened slightly.

"...This tastes nice."

Jun Haoxuan, who had been lifting a cup of wine to his lips, stopped. He glanced at him. Curious.

Meishan was staring into the tea as if studying it, as though the answer to something deeper might be hidden within its surface.

He took another sip.

"It is brewed from cinder plinth roots," Jun Haoxuan said calmly. "My mother favors it. She claims it strengthens the core."

Lan Meishan shook his head lightly. "It does not."

His voice was soft, but certain. "It nourishes the beast soul more than the core."

He took another sip, as if confirming his own conclusion.

Jun Haoxuan watched him for a moment and nodded. "I see."

A pause settled between them again.

Jun Haoxuan lowered his gaze to his wine, the clear liquid catching the light like frozen glass. The blade resting across his lap reflected faint azure hues, unmoving.

Across the room, Ningyan slept. Sprawled across the bed without restraint, his limbs loose, his breathing steady. Completely unguarded and unbothered as if he had not nearly died hours ago.

Jun Haoxuan’s gaze lingered on him longer than necessary.

Something in his chest tightened. Then eased.

Strange.

Everything felt... different.... Fuller.

He could not.. name it.

He had known Lan Meishan since childhood. But they had never sat like this. Never shared silence. Never shared space.

They never shared... anything. And yet now, because of one beast, they did.

Jun Haoxuan lowered his gaze again, picking up his chopsticks.

He ate slowly as if grounding himself in the moment.

He hoped it would last.
