Chapter 50: You Don’t Want Children?

Yan Wuhen chuckled deeply, his heated breath fanning against Ningyan’s neck.

"Why wouldn’t I be jealous?" he murmured. "You are mine. Not his."

Ningyan swallowed at the possessive certainty in his voice. "I didn’t know it was his chamber."

Wuhen pressed a brief kiss to his neck and pulled him closer, their bodies fitting together with ease.

"We’re leaving the academy for a while."

Ningyan exhaled slowly. He’d already expected that. "Is it because of what happened to Qinghe?"

Yan Wuhen sighed. He released Ningyan then immediately hooked a hand around his neck, not tight enough to hurt, just enough to remind him who owned him.

His red-gold fox eyes gleamed with lazy amusement as he tilted Ningyan’s head slightly, studying his expression like one might a favorite toy.

"Sunland City," he said calmly. "is where the Snow Foxes reside. Their clan lord went hunting. Only his head returned. Qinghe was supposed to find out who killed him and put my protection talisman over the clan...."

Ningyan grimaced as a gory image surfaced in his mind.

"I should have gone," Wuhen continued lightly. "Not her. But I stayed for this damned event. It’s over now, so we leave."

Ningyan sighed. "I don’t have a choice, do I?"

"We can’t stay apart for that long."

Ningyan looked up at him with a sweet, innocent look.

"You could break the chain," he said softly. "We could go our separate ways from here."

Yan Wuhen let out a low, rich, utterly delighted laugh. As if Ningyan had told him the funniest joke he’d heard in his life.

"I have no reason to do that, Yan’er," He released his neck and the spirit mate chain materialized between them.

This time, it wasn’t uniform.

From Yan Wuhen’s wrist to the center, it glowed white-gold.

From Ningyan’s neck to the center, it burned red-gold.

Ningyan frowned. "What happened to it?"

"Your beast soul awakened," Wuhen replied. "This is how it’s meant to look. It reflects us. What we are."

Ningyan stared at the chain, his eyes narrowing. "Then why don’t you just break it?"

Wuhen hesitated. Just for a fraction of a second.

Ningyan seized it.

"If Wuyin really tried to kill you," he said quietly, "then he’ll try again. And now that he knows about the spirit mate chain, what happens if he uses me to get to you?"

Yan Wuhen idly played with the spirit mate chain, its glow sliding between his fingers as he studied it with faint interest.

Ningyan watched him with barely concealed hope. Hoping he would finally, finally, just break it.

Instead, Wuhen released the chain and abruptly gripped Ningyan’s chin, tilting his head up. A teasing, dangerously seductive smile curved his lips.

"Let him try," Wuhen said lightly. "And you really need to stop trying to make me break the chain, Yan’er. You’re hurting my feelings."

Ningyan grit his teeth. "Just break it already! Instead of dragging me somewhere I might end up dead!" he snapped.

Yan Wuhen hummed, lips pursed in mock consideration. "But you won’t die. I’ll make sure you stay by my side forever and ever." His eyes gleamed. "We’ll grow old together. Have children. Grandchildren."

Ningyan’s eyes twitched. "What?"

Wuhen released his chin, pouting childishly. "You don’t want children?"

Ningyan’s face flushed crimson. He wrenched himself free and stormed toward the bed. "You’re insane!"

Yan Wuhen laughed, utterly unbothered, watching as Ningyan picked up the folded robes placed neatly at the bedside.

"They’re suitable for Sunland’s cold," Wuhen added lazily.

Ningyan clutched the robes to his chest.

Children.

Yan Wuhen had spoken so casually about having children that Ningyan felt like screaming but instead, he pointed furiously at the doorway, his face still burning red.

"Get out. I want to bathe without you hovering."

"Why?" Wuhen grinned. "I could join you. It would be faster."

Ningyan scowled, attempting to look intimidating. Unfortunately for him, to Wuhen, he looked edible.

Reluctantly... very reluctantly.... Wuhen turned away, smiling to himself as he left the chamber.

Only then did Ningyan release the breath he hadn’t realized he was holding. He hugged the robes tightly to his chest.

"Why does he talk like he can get me pregnant...?"

He froze.

"Book Ningyan was supposed have kids too... but that was just readers canon... right?"

His expression crumpled. "Right?"

He grabbed his hair in frustration. "Ahh! Can—can that even happen?!"

Then he straightened abruptly.

"No. Stop. I haven’t even had sex yet!" he declared to the empty room. "That’s it. I’m going celibate. Completely. Never ever."

He rushed into the bathing chamber, seeing that a bath had already been prepared for him. He let out a deep breath before stepping into the heated water, his mind still circling Yan Wuhen’s words.

He had read so many novels about males getting pregnant. There was omegaverse, mpreg.

But this... the author had said Ningyan was meant to have children. And yet, it never happened, not with how the story ended.

Oh no.

He stayed in the bath for a long while before drying himself and changing into fresh robes. He pushed his flute into his belt, hid the seal Jun Haoxuan had given him within his robes, and inhaled deeply.

His hair remained slightly ruffled as he stepped out into the hall, intent on leaving the manor and hoping not to bump into Jun Haoxuan.

He was glad Jun Haoxuan was far more put together than Yan Wuhen.

As he turned a corner, he almost collided with someone. Heavy waves of spiritual energy rolled off the figure, and when Ningyan realized it was Lan Yunlai, he stumbled back with a sharp gasp.

Lan Yunlai stood there along with Lan Meishan, who wore a faintly surprised expression. Several guards lingered behind them.

Ningyan quickly bowed his head. "I apologize for almost bumping into you, Your Majesty."

Lan Yunlai glared at him. "You are the phoenix bound to Yan Wuhen by a spirit mate chain."

Ningyan hadn’t expected that. He should have. Lan Yunlai was powerful enough to see it.

He kept his head lowered. Lan Yunlai raised a brow, lips parting as if to speak but Lan Meishan cut in first.

"You’re going to be late, Father."

"Oh, yes," Lan Yunlai replied immediately, walking past Ningyan.

Ningyan lifted his head just in time for his eyes to meet Meishan’s. Meishan looked away at once and followed after Lan Yunlai, the guards trailing behind.

Ningyan straightened, exhaling sharply as he pressed a hand to his chest.

"Oh, fuck," he breathed.

In the end, he chose to run.

He exited the manor and found Yan Wuhen waiting at the main grounds, two carriages prepared. Yan Wuhen stood beside the second carriage, Jun Haoxuan at his side.

It felt strange seeing them simply standing together.

Ningyan slowed as he approached, briefly catching sight of Wuyin speaking to a guard, a frown on his face. He wondered if Wuyin was angry that Wuhen wasn’t dead like he’d planned.

Ningyan looked away and stopped in front of the two great divine beast princes.

"Time to go?"

Wuhen nodded. "Yes."

Jun Haoxuan smiled. "It was a pleasure having you both here."

Wuhen rolled his eyes at the dragon prince.

Ningyan said nothing. He just opened the carriage door himself and slid inside.
