Chapter 69: Chaos And Discipline

"So... Yunyi’s your aunt." π•—π—Ώπ•–πžπ°π—²π•“π§π• π•§π—²π₯.πšŒπ¨πš–

Jun Haoxuan’s voice was quiet, lacking any real surprise as they stood beneath the tree, both gazing up at the blue flames.

"You don’t sound surprised," Ningyan muttered.

"That’s because I’m not." Jun Haoxuan folded his arms. "I suspected you were related to her somehow. Your kind’s numbers are dwindling. Even if some are hiding, it doesn’t change that fact. Finding a relative isn’t that difficult."

Ningyan scoffed. "That logic’s flawed. It could just as easily be the other way around."

Jun Haoxuan’s lips curved faintly as he turned fully toward him. Then his eyes caught on something else.

The spirit mate chain.

White-gold light shimmered as it materialized around Ningyan’s neck.

Jun Haoxuan’s smile vanished. "Look at me."

Ningyan turned, confused. "What?"

Jun Haoxuan stepped forward and reached out, his fingers closing around the chain. The moment it solidified in Ningyan’s sight, lightning crackled violently around Jun Haoxuan’s grip.

Ningyan’s breath hitched, horror flooding his eyes as the white-gold glow flared brighter. "What are you doing?!"

Jun Haoxuan didn’t answer. He yanked the chain.

Instantly, the bond blazed. White-gold fire erupting outward as a violent surge of power exploded from Ningyan’s body. The cultivation space trembled, the ground shuddering beneath them.

Jun Haoxuan released the chain at once, moving with blinding speed as he dodged the backlash.

Silence fell.

Ningyan stood frozen, heart hammering as the chain vanished from sight. He stared down at his hands, disbelief etched into his expression, before slowly lifting his head.

"What... was that?"

"I tried to break it."

Ningyan swallowed. "Is that even possible?"

"It isn’t." Jun Haoxuan walked closer. "If Wuhen weren’t also in the Saint Beast realm, I would’ve snapped it."

Ningyan stared at him. "I attacked you."

"You did."

"Why?" His voice shook.

Jun Haoxuan’s golden gaze narrowed. "Because you protected it."

He lifted a hand, fingers curling through empty air just beneath Ningyan’s throat. The chain materialized again, caught effortlessly in his grip.

Ningyan frowned. "Why would I protect a bond I don’t even want?"

Jun Haoxuan smirked.

It wasn’t mischievous like Wuhen’s. Not charming like Rong Yue’s. Or rare like Meishan’s.

It was sharp. Cold. Contemptuous.. aimed squarely at the chain.

"Are you sure," he said softly, tightening his grip,

"you don’t want the bond?"

Ningyan didn’t understand the question. "Why would Iβ€”"

"Answer my question first," Jun Haoxuan interrupted. His deep voice was heavy and dominating.

It made Ningyan feel small. Not intimidated. Just... small, in a way he didn’t quite know how to explain.

Haoxuan wrapped the spirit chain around his fist. Tongue-lightning crackled along its length, sparks snapping against his skin. Ningyan could only stare.

He should have gone back to the manor. He’d already told himself that being stuck with one male lead was more than enough. Instead, he stood rooted beneath that golden, reptilian gaze. One that dried his mouth and sent his heart racing.

"I am certain I do not want the bond," Ningyan said carefully. "Yan Wuhen has me here against my will."

Jun Haoxuan nodded.

He released the chain and placed one hand behind his back, posture straight and controlled. His gaze drifted to the blue fires crowning the tree, flames flickering like leaves.

Ningyan watched him. "You hate the chain."

"The spirit mate chain carries many meanings among beasts," Haoxuan replied calmly. "An unbreakable bond. Loyalty. Love." His golden eyes darkened. "Slavery."

Then his gaze returned to Ningyan and brightened, just slightly.

"I have my own principles. My own discipline. Do you remember when I gave you a choice?"

Ningyan nodded. "I do."

"I wanted to free you."

"By pulling me into your grasp, Your Highness?" Ningyan countered immediately.

Haoxuan studied him for a long moment, so intently that Ningyan wondered if his thoughts were being read.

"Call me Haoxuan," he said at last. "We are past formalities."

"If you say so."

Haoxuan’s lips twitched. "As my disciple, you wouldn’t be trapped as you are with Yan Wuhen."

Ningyan smiled faintly. "I do not trust you."

"But you trust him."

"Is this meant to be a competition?"

"A competition?" Haoxuan chuckled. "With Yan Wuhen?"

Ningyan poked carefully at the opening. "I have goals, Haoxuan. Those goals have steps. Unfortunately, you are not one of them." He pulled a sigil from his robe and held it up. "Not anymore."

Haoxuan looked amused. "I see. You are ambitious."

"Indeed."

"Have you heard the stories about Yan Wuhen?" Haoxuan asked quietly. "Do you know why they call him the embodiment of chaos and not his father?"

Ningyan had read the novel to know exactly why the Divine Beast princes were feared and revered as they were.

But he didn’t answer Jun Haoxuan. He simply stared at him.

Haoxuan didn’t seem to expect a response anyway. He continued calmly, as though recounting a lesson rather than a massacre.

"He destroyed Fire City when he was young. Thirteen, I believe. Why?" Haoxuan’s golden eyes flickered faintly. "Because the Bear Clan leader harassed Qinghe. So, he slaughtered them all and took the entire city with him."

Ningyan felt something twist in his chest.

"From that day on," Haoxuan went on, unhurried, "the Bear Clan fell beneath the Fox Clan. Reduced to servants, mostly fodder for battle. And Fire City became his."

Ningyan couldn’t deny the chill that crept up his spine. "...What is your point?"

"My point," Haoxuan said, turning to face him fully, "is that if you are ambitious, you shouldn’t approach chaos first. Use discipline to provide the clarity you need to succeed."

Ningyan smiled. "And discipline can never trap me?" he asked lightly, almost coy.

Haoxuan nodded without hesitation. "Yes."

Ningyan exhaled softly. "You see the spirit mate chain as slavery. Wuhen sees it as a bond between him and I." His voice slowed. "A bond that means I belong to him... and he belongs to me. In his eyes, we are lovers."

"And in your eyes?" Haoxuan asked, genuine curiosity glinting through his composure.

Ningyan met his gaze for a long moment.

Then he stepped back and gave a respectful bow. "Thank you for reuniting me with my family, Your Highness. What you did for me was meaningful. But I should take my leave now."

He turned away.

"You could stay the night," Haoxuan said before he could go. "I’ll have servants prepare a chamber for you. Or.. you could sleep in mine, as you did last time."

Ningyan stopped. He didn’t expect that.

Slowly, he turned back. His expression softened, curious, almost innocent, as he looked at Haoxuan and asked quietly,

"Are you interested in me, Haoxuan?"
