Chapter 62: Mini war lord

As Aries stood before the vast array of people gathered in the hall, his eyes moved slowly from left to right, taking in the unfamiliar faces, the rigid officials, and finally the king seated at the extreme front of the room. He breathed in deeply, then walked in.

As he did so, the eyes he had already found unbearable became even more suffocating.

But Aries continued onward.

Thoughts about what the discussion in this courtroom might entail and why, of all people, he had been summoned to stand before them tangled within him.

When he reached the very front, Aries’s eyes finally met the king’s. Instinctively, he straightened his posture. The hall fell so utterly silent that it seemed Aries could hear even the faintest sound.

His eyes drifted once more around the hall, confusion and unease tightening his chest. Then, without warning, he dropped to the floor.

A ripple of confusion spread through the room as people stared in disbelief.

"Long live the king," he said clearly, his voice steady despite the tension coursing through him.

Slowly, he lifted his head again, staring back at the king.

The greeting caught the king completely off guard. It was unexpected and after a moment of stunned silence, the king burst into laughter. His voice crackled through the hall, loud and unrestrained.

The officials merely stared, their expressions carefully controlled. Unlike the king, they did not have the liberty to laugh freely, nor did they consider the moment amusing.

As their gazes shifted between Aries and the king, some of them began to question whether the king’s deductions about humans were truly accurate and whether his grand plan would work at all.

Especially one particular official, whose narrowed eyes lingered on Aries far longer than the others.

When the king finally finished laughing, though his cheeks still twitched with lingering amusement, he gestured toward Aries and said, "You should rise."

"Thank you, Your Majesty," Aries replied respectfully, and then he stood.

He remained there, standing upright, his eyes fixed briefly on the king before wandering cautiously to other parts of the room, observing faces and expressions he could not yet read.

It remained quiet for a moment after he stood, until the king spoke again.

"Servants," he called, his voice carrying authority, "bring a chair to the center of the room. We wouldn’t want my esteemed guest standing after just being treated, would we?"

The command caught Aries completely off guard, and he stared in shock. From everything he understood about nobility and royal courts, only the king was permitted to sit during proceedings. If the king allowed another to do so, it meant that person was held in particularly high regard.

Aries stared at himself in confusion and disbelief, struggling to process the implications. If this were truly the case, then perhaps he did not need to fear the Wolf King as he had feared the Tiger King. Perhaps they were not so alike after all.

One of the courtroom servants stepped forward and placed a chair at the center of the hall, just beside Aries. Aries glanced at the seat and then back at the king, words hovering uncertainly on his lips.

"You should sit," the king said, gesturing toward the chair. "You’ve only just recovered."

Aries looked at the chair again, then sighed softly before sitting down. Truthfully, he was exhausted, both physically and mentally, and in no state for drawn-out court dramas. Sitting required little convincing.

Once he settled into the chair, the king’s voice rose again. "We are pleased that you have finally awakened. It speaks highly of your strong will, your healing abilities as I’ve been informed, and the efforts of the physicians who attended to you. For that, I welcome you back to the world of the living."

"Thank you... I suppose," Aries replied plainly, unsure of what response was expected of him.

"Good, good," the king said, nodding slightly. Then his gaze sharpened as he continued, "Now, without troubling or stressing you too much, and without taking more of your time than necessary, do you understand why you are here?"

He stared directly at Aries as he asked the question.

And Aries shook his head slowly. He could understand a few things from his own deductions, but even then, he felt that a bit of explanation would not hurt.

The king seemed to understand his expression and said, "You are human, and that alone is a great asset to my kingdom. I wish to use that asset to its fullest potential. Do you have any problems with that?"

"Hmmm..." Aries sighed softly. Was it the construction of the words, or the way the king had said them? Either way, he didn’t feel good hearing it.

An asset to be used.

Did that mean the king intended to kill him someday? Or own him to use him however he pleased?

Before Aries could dwell too deeply on the thought, the king’s voice sounded again. "But fret not. All of this will be subject to your consideration and consent."

’As if he would actually let me walk away if I said no,’ Aries thought bitterly.

Then he asked carefully, choosing his words with precision. "Do you mean that if I chose to leave, you would allow me? I mean, that would be the truest way to respect my freedom of consent."

The king’s demeanor changed at once. He snickered, a small laugh escaping his lips, before he replied, "Surely you also know that such a thing is impossible. How can I allow an asset to simply leave? There are many things I can accept, but that—no."

"Cool. I knew that," Aries said flatly. By now, he was growing bolder, more comfortable speaking freely before the king. "So don’t speak of consent as though you truly intend to grant it."

Then he added, "What exactly do you mean when you say I’m an asset you want to use to my full potential?"

The king’s hand rose, cradling his chin thoughtfully. "Well, humans are known for many things—witchcraft, healing abilities, war tactics, and more. I believe you already understand what I might need you for. But before that, I need you to tell me something."

Aries felt his curiosity spike. "Which is?"

"What is your relationship with the Tiger King?" the king asked evenly. "Is he someone you wouldn’t mind seeing dead, or someone you deeply care about? When you spoke of leaving this place, did you intend to go to him?"

At those words, Aries couldn’t help it—he burst into laughter. The idea was so absurd it grated on his nerves. The very last thing he wanted was to return to that domineering king. And what irritated him even more was the fact that, in the end, he might not have a choice.

The Tiger King was part of the Beast Lords who governed the peace accords. That meant Aries would eventually be forced to deal with him again, forced into that ridiculous notion of "I can change him."

It was fucking annoying just thinking about it.

Still, Aries calmed himself. He was in a public space, surrounded by nobility, and could not afford to lose control.

Instead, he crossed his legs while seated, leaned back until his back rested comfortably against the chair, and said, "Do you know how funny and annoying at the same time it is that you’d even think that?"

"Blasphemous!" a thunderous voice erupted across the hall. "You dare call the king’s words annoying!"

Aries was taken completely off guard.

"Has he been beaten by a dog?" Aries mouthed silently as he glanced at the official who had shouted.

The king raised a hand slightly toward the man and said calmly, "That’s enough. Do not concern yourself."

Then he turned back to Aries. "You may continue."

"Okay," Aries replied, giving little importance to the one who had barked earlier. Then he continued, "I hate the Tiger King. And if possible, I would do my best never to return to his side. I wanted to leave because I thought you would be just like him."

"Oh?" the king asked. "And why do you hate him?"

Aries sighed deeply before answering. "He caged me up. He wanted to breed me."

As those words left his mouth, something clicked within Aries. Comprehension finally dawned on him.

Since entering the Wolf Kingdom, he had begun to understand something he had previously overlooked.

He stared at the king as his thoughts raced. ’Wait... how did I not realize this before? The Wolf King was known for having many offspring. When the time came to choose a successor, there would inevitably be war among them. That meant he had no need for a breeder to sire an heir.’

’What the actual fuck.’

Just then, the king spoke, his words mirroring Aries’s realization. "Oh... well, I wouldn’t blame Ravien. He must be exhausted from hearing the same complaint through his court. He probably thought breeding you would silence it. Now I see why he went to such lengths to acquire you."

The king shrugged lightly. "But you needn’t worry about that here. I have more offspring than I know what to do with. I could even afford to give a few away."

The king laughed at his own words.

After that, the hall fell into silence. Aries stared at nothing in particular, his fingers moving absently as he toyed with them.

Then the king spoke again, his voice cutting cleanly through the quiet.

"So," he said, "what do you think about becoming the Assistant War Lord of the Wolf Kingdom?"
