Chapter 282: Final Act I: the face of the angry voice who always calls her

I gasped for air, reaching for something that could assist me to stand, only to grasp a handful of grass. I rolled, arms propped on the ground, as I coughed painfully. My heart was constricting while my head was throbbing, making my eyes heat up.

"I told you, stop."

A voice of a man rang from my side. Although his voice was warm with an I-told-you-so tone, any sound that entered my ears was heightened, worsening my headache.

"You are so stubborn, Lamb."

I closed my eyes and took several deep breaths, resting my forehead on the grass I was slumped on. Even though I couldn’t see his face, I could feel his gaze on my side.

"I changed it, at least," came out a weak voice through my gritted teeth, raising my head at the person squatting at arm’s length from me. His golden eyes fluttered ever so slowly, frowning at the stubborn expression plastered across my face.

"You’re welcome, Hugh."

Hugo pressed his lips into a hard line before he let out a deep exhale, slumping on the grass with me, planting his palm on either side of him while leaning back. He kept his eyes on me, shrugging.

"Not all changes are good, Bambi. Although our end is the same and we’re back in the empyrean realm, there’s no telling the werewolves’ lives are better." He cocked his head to the side. "The first time we lived and died in the mortal realm, my people still had Ronmin, a land they can call home."

"What do you mean?" my brows creased, seeing his nonchalant expression.

"What I mean is... your version is shit."

"What?" I gasped in disbelief, only to wince at the sudden pain that struck my head.

"Tch. I waited for you for nothing." He grumbled, dragging his butt with his feet in my direction. Before I could react, Hugo placed his palm on the side of my head down to his lap. "Rest first. It’s not easy to recover after sacrificing your mortal, divine life and going against mother for me."

I looked up at him and sighed, frowning as I averted my eyes. "Did I fail? Did the reality I hoped for the wolves is way worse than prophesied?" 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂

There was a long silence that enveloped the two of us. The soft whoosh of the midday breeze blew past my face, making me snap my eyes and raise them to my surrounding. Hugo and I were currently in a vast landscape where an abandoned and ruined castle stood nearby.

I looked at it, and I instantly recognized it. It looked exactly the same as the imperial palace of Ronmin. The debris and vines crawling around its old concrete showed how many seasons it had endured, waiting for inhabitants to walk around and give life to it.

This wasn’t Ronmin, but the empyrean realm. A place where the wolf used to live. Call it a genetic memory that the wolves built Ronmin just like how the first werewolf knew his home.

"It’s bad." My train of thought was cut short when Hugo spoke once again, making me look back at him while still resting my head on his lap. Hugo was stroking my hair, gazing down at me with affection.

"After your great sacrifice, there were good things that happened in the mortal realm. I’m certain you’re aware there were things that you cannot change. However, the decisions after that were the decisions the wolf mutually agreed." He flashed me a weak smile. "I missed you to the point I was angry. You’re with me, but then again, you’re not."

"Hugh, that’s the only way we can stop the extinction of wolves." I breathed out with a frown, retrieving all the memories I had left when I returned to the mortal realm. "And I did it for you. The child of evil left his legacy, and I couldn’t leave the mortal realm without anyone who can stop them."

"But the twist you did is sick." He clicked his tongue and massaged my scalp. "Either way, thank you, love. I know you don’t want my existence to be erased and had to strain yourself just to keep me by your side."

"You thanked me like this when you keep waking me up and telling me to come back."

Hugo chuckled playfully while I frowned. "That is because you are starting to believe that reality. I had to remind you that our reality... you and I, aren’t part of that world anymore." He flicked my forehead, making my frown worsen while I rubbed it.

"We both suffered in the holy war. Knowing the child of evil survived the holy war, waiting for his time to crawl his way on the surface of the mortal realm, you had to send a small part of ourselves back in the mortal realm to stop him," he continued with a deep sigh, leaning back as he raised his chin, eyes at the ruined castle near our vantage point. "We succeeded since he’s already locked within me. You granted mercy to his seeds, though."

He paused while I stared at his peaceful visage. After a moment, Hugo set his eyes back to me and tilted his head to the side.

"Why?" he asked, blinking almost innocently. "You knew the child of evil and that pure-blooded prince had a blood contract to keep the child of evil’s blood running in his descendants’ veins. You could’ve killed him and those children. Why did you let them live?"

I pursed my lips into a thin line. "I couldn’t really hide things from you, huh?"

"You think you can hide things from me when I gained consciousness, even when a part of my consciousness is in the mortal realm?"

"How did you even do that?" I frowned and saw him shrug.

"I’m strong and had a stronger willpower?" my frown grew worse at the air of arrogance in his voice. "Don’t change the subject, Bambi. Tell me, why did you let the child of evil continue his bloodline in the mortal realm and leave a prophecy in that prince’s head?"

I didn’t reply to Hugo for a moment, as I only gazed at him. I asked myself the same question before I let out a shallow breath, gazing up at the clear sky of the empyrean realm where stars twinkled even in broad daylight. It was almost blinding to look at.

"Because I believe... in Niall’s heart," came out a muffled voice, causing his brows to elevate before I smiled and gazed back at him. "We all had our shadows, Hugh. This means, no matter how bright a person was, there was always that darkness following our trail silently. Although I am biased and had chosen the wolves, I prepared a good twist for you. Vampires need salvation, too."

"Ugh..." Hugo cringed, but he simply rocked his head before we both shared a moment of peace and enjoyed the soothing breeze in our own sacred place.

It was a long story; a complicated one.

Our story wasn’t just something of returning to time to relive what had occurred. Our time in the mortal realm as Rinnie and Hugo was all true. We both lived in that time, experienced those things we did, and got to enjoy life. Hugo was born as Hugo Tempest, a part of the wolf in the empyrean realm while I lived as the lamb and was named Rinnie by the king and queen of Everfell.

Due to my fluctuating power after the holy war and my separation of the body from the wolf in this realm, I made quite a few mistakes. One of them was putting a small part of the wolf in Daniel’s body. If only I didn’t do that, Hugo in the mortal realm would’ve known our purpose when the time came.

Although Hugo and I mutually agreed that if we would live in the mortal like blank canvasses to live life and be part of that world, we should’ve reached a point where our purpose would resurface in our heads. Not everything went according to our plan, obviously. But it was worth the experience.

Either way, we achieved our goal. I didn’t know how many millennia had it been since then, but the memories we had were still fresh in our heads.

"Hugh, did you like your life as a Tempest?" I asked after a long silence, gazing at him, only to see the side of his lips curl up into a subtle smile.

"Having a family... thank you for giving me a chance to have one. They’re good people."

I smiled in satisfaction at his reply, adjusting my head on his lap. "Then I had no regret in the end. Weren’t you worried since you told me the change I did is crap?"

"Well..." Hugo gazed down at me, stretching his lips from ear to ear. He then cupped my cheek, lifting my head as he bent over to meet me halfway.

"More than that, I’m sorry that you had to live such a painful life in the mortal realm just for me to live a good one. Don’t do that again just for me."

I closed my eyes as he closed in, feeling his lips against mine. "It’s the life I chose," I whispered in his mouth, smiling against his lips.

Our story seemed to end that night in the mortal realm, but it was simply the end of the first book.

Hugo and I and the child of evil within him were back in the empyrean realm. Our story together would continue in this place while we recuperate.

As for the mortal realm... I could simply hope that balance for all races would soon find its place.

NOTE: Confuse? Wait for the next Chapters :) But for starters, the first story is the prequel of the world. How the world turned out after that will be tackled later. The next volume will show you the outcome of this. :)
