Tsugi No Level-Chapter 79: Delivering good news
Chapter 79 - 79: Delivering good news
Braverte walks into the office of the governor with a gentle smile on his face because he is about to deliver some good news. The governor is standing by the window and just ended a phone call as Braverte walks in and puts the phone in his pocket. Braverte walks up to the desk.
"Good news. I finally got him."
"I've heard. Congratulations."
"That was quick."
"Yeah, good news travels fast. But I've only heard rumors, so I'm looking forward to hearing it from the horse's mouth."
The tone in which the governor is speaking isn't filled with excitement or glee, instead, it has an undertone of hidden disdain. But Braverte just assumes it's because being a governor is hard work, and even good news can get overshadowed rather quickly.
"I was able to find where they made it, sold it, and sourced it."
"Were you also able to find any data on any of the computers?"
"No, seems that when things went haywire, Bilicus and Strils wiped everything."
"That's too bad. That could have been an invaluable source of information."
"Yeah. But that wasn't my goal, so I didn't really focus on making sure we got that."
"What exactly was your goal again?"
"It was to stop the flow of MYOS and bring justice to the families of the victims."
"Right. And you feel you've done that?"
Braverte is silent for a few moments as he is unsure of how to answer that. Because he is getting the sense that the governor might have information he doesn't have.
"I have."
"Hmmm, let me ask you something, Braverte. What exactly does bringing justice mean to you?"
At this point, the governor sits down in his chair across from Braverte and crosses his arms. Braverte's smile is now completely gone.
"It means bringing those who do bad to the light to be judged by those they wronged. And if that isn't possible, well then I decide what is right in the moment."
"There we go. You decide what is right in the moment. You, you alone decided that killing Bilicus was right."
The governor reaches into a drawer and throws several tablets on the desk. Each one has several images of the zombies that were killed and the students who were injured. The governor then leans forward and uncrosses his arms.
"And not only that, you even went as far as killing innocent civilians."
"I had no choice, they were being manipulated by Bilicus and Strils."
"You used to be one of the strongest that ever lived. I'm supposed to believe that some untrained zombie is too much for you to just detain or knock unconscious? No, this is the work of someone who believes himself to be above the law."
"If I believed that, why would I go through the trouble of proving they were guilty?"
"I don't know. But don't you think it's rather convenient that one is dead and the other is missing? You can now say whatever you want, and there is no one to disprove anything you say. We are just to believe these ridiculous claims that the zombies are actually soldiers in some army. Is this how you wish to comfort their families? By telling them their loved ones are just tools in some imaginary plot you made up?"
Braverte leans forward and places his hands on the desk.
"I didn't make it up."
"Then where is your proof?"
Braverte, in anger, wants to clench his fists, but his hands are still on the desk. The desk breaks under the pressure of Braverte's grip.
"Check the bodies and brain activity of those who lost themselves to MYOS."
The governor sees the cracks in his desk but doesn't let it faze him.
"All this time, what do you think our doctors have been doing? They have been looking for a cure to get them out of their comas. They have probed and dissected every part of these zombies' bodies. Don't you think they would have found something like that a long time ago? Not to mention all the pharmaceutical companies that made amazing drugs to sustain and help keep the zombies alive. Don't you think they have stumbled upon this while researching?"
Braverte leans back and takes his hands off the table.
"Just because you can't prove something, doesn't mean it isn't there."
"In this world, that is exactly what it means. You destroyed school property for a personal vendetta. You injured your own students while trying to prove something that doesn't exist. And now you want the rest of the world to justify your actions. No, we will not. Bilicus had a lot of friends who supported him and whom he himself supported back. If he was guilty, he deserved a fair trial, not a dog's death at the hands of an alleged retired serial killer."
"By support, you mean he gave them money, and in return, they let him do what he does?"
The governor slams the desk with his fist as he stands up in anger.
"How dare you? You're nothing more than a glorified babysitter who used to be a criminal."
This triggers Braverte as he releases a small amount of blood lust. This small amount is enough to immediately sit the governor down back in his chair as he is overcome by fear. Shakily, he still tries to make his point.
"S-s-s-see, y-you're nothing but a killer."
Braverte catches his bloodlust and immediately retracts it. He looks the governor in the eyes as he takes a deep breath.

"May your nights be peaceful from here on out."
And with that said, Braverte turns around and walks out of the room. The moment the governor is alone, is releases a deep sigh of relief. He is happy that he didn't lose his life by provoking Braverte like that. He takes the phone from his pocket and places it on the table.
"Did you get all of that?"
A voice on the other end of the phone call answers.
"Yeah, we heard everything. Once he is off school grounds, the bounty can go into effect."
