"Mmhmmm…"

Theo woke up with one lazy moan on his lips.

At first, he struggled to get his consciousness through the thick layer of morning drowsiness.

The warm clutches of his simple covers seemed all but impossible to escape. The softness of his plant-based bed chained him down better than even the toughest shackles.

And then…

Like by a strike of lightning, Theo’s eyes suddenly pulled apart as just one thought took over his entire sense of self.

’I’m late!’

This wasn’t a new feeling to him at all.

Not after the trouble he went through to adjust from his young-man schedule of sleeping whenever he wanted to an adult system that allowed him to arrive at his job on time.

And right now, this overwhelming feeling of being fucked due to oversleeping took over the drowsiness from before, paralyzing Theo’s body and mind alike with the sense of immense dread over the consequences of sleeping for way too long and thus missing the deadlines of adult life.

It took Theo a good few moments to finally realize that… he wasn’t even in the modern world, where being late for work could lead to getting fired on the spot and thus threatening the safety of his finances—the one thing he simply couldn’t afford to risk.

Then, it took him a few more moments to realize that while he wasn’t even in the modern world… his current deadlines were of much greater, graver importance than something as mundane as a job!

’THE TIME!’

Pushing his eyes wide open, Theo instantly dragged them over to the bottom right corner of his vision, his heart nearly jumping out from his chest as the sense of dread only intensified…

Only for the young man to then finally breathe a sigh of relief… a relief that only lasted for the split of a second before Theo jumped out of his bed.

Before three seconds could pass, Theo already flew towards the doors to his bedroom—that he somehow managed to reach before falling asleep the day before—and then dashed through the corridors of his stone-wood mansion, all the way to the point when he finally escaped to the outside.

He didn’t stop there, however. Faced with a much more open terrain ahead, he only accelerated instead, already summoning his iron shovel before he could even reach the last construction site he could remember setting up.

’Did it work?!’

Theo’s memories of the last day were hazy, still affected by the morning drowsiness and the exhaustion he somehow overcame before collapsing into desperately needed slumber.

For the next few seconds, Theo could do nothing but grit his teeth in silent frustration as the heavy wooden gate of his palisade swung open, slowly revealing the lands now enclosed between itself and the outer stone wall that, by all means, should’ve finished its construction by now.

As the outer lands of Theo’s manor revealed themselves to his eyes, however, he just stood frozen in place, blinking his eyes over and over again as if unsure whether or not to believe the sight before his eyes, struggling to decide whether it was real or if it was but a mental projection of his desperate desire.

No matter how hard he looked, though, the truth was all there for him to see.

The three towers stood tall at the fringes of the clearing he cut out way back before he learned of the true scale of the outer stone walls.

And, as if mirroring their formation, three more projections continued to phase in and out between their completed and merely holographic state, existing right on the edge between but a projection and reality.

"Oh right…"

After blinking his eyes in silence for a little bit longer, Theo finally connected the dots.

’Right, I made the promise, didn’t I?’

A quick check of the manor’s storage soon confirmed Theo’s assumption—the siege ballistas that he set to craft before collapsing were now all finished.

’On that point… why didn’t they move to the construction on their own?’ he thought as he noticed the weird detail. ’I’m quite sure, when it comes to construction, those strings of light would come not only from my personal space, not even from the manor’s storage… but even from any random chest that I just happened to plop down within my claim. So…’

Theo hesitated for a moment.

’Why didn’t it happen now?’

Whatever the answer could be, Theo managed to solve the problem by simply moving the siege ballistas from the manor’s storage to his personal inventory, instantly causing three sparks of white light to shoot out from his chest, each of the lights targeting one of the near-finished towers.

Just like that, their weird visual of phasing in and out of existence came to an end with the usual animation of the entire thing lifting up while squeezing down on itself, only to then decompress right as it plopped right back into its rightful place.

This time, however, this wasn’t the end of it. Instead, Theo’s vision bugged out for a moment… only for yet another overlay to suddenly apply to his eyes, painting everything around him with a different hue ranging from dark, crimson red to bright green.

Quite notably, the dark red sprawled out from the bottom of each of the towers, near instantly turning into green around twenty meters away from each of them. Then, for as far as Theo could see, the overlaying color remained the same, with the one exception being the treetops that lingered all the way out at the very fringe of his eyesight range.

"Range?" Theo muttered, figuring out the purpose of this new overlay by mere instinct. "Well, all that’s left is to hope those towers are actually accurate, huh?"

Shaking his head, Theo put the topic of the ballistas aside, focusing on the shovel in his hand as he turned his eyes down to the ground, or more specifically, the imaginary lines he drew between each of the towers.

"Just one last stretch before the show…" he whispered before shaking his head and digging his shovel down into the ground, eagerly rushing to get the very last step of his preparations completed.

And with the clock striking forty minutes until the invasion, he had just enough time to have his trenches and bunkers completed!
