Chapter 718 Not a Father

"I don't think it's a bad idea," Kanae remarked when Kevin visited her in the hospital.

Several days have passed since the incident with the two representatives. Many people had returned back to their daily activities and resumed what they usually did without much hindrance. The ripples that occurred because of them died out soon enough.

The focus of this city was development. After Jason's action, the officials were treating Jason far better than the others. As for the governor, the fat man had escaped somewhere when Jason was busy handling the representatives. It looked like the man didn't have the confidence to face Jason again after the loss in their clash with one another.

The current governor was the previous vice governor. This man was more amiable, but could be easily suppressed. He followed after Jason's order, making him look like nothing but a puppet.

On the other hand, Kevin and Kanae stayed in the hospital to recuperate for their wounds while waiting for news from Matt. There was no significant news report so far, making them stayed idle and only heard reports here and there.

"I don't have the same opinion. The capital city is an unknown city for us. Do you think it's wise to just barge inside without having the knowledge beforehand?" Kevin shook his head.

Even though Matt hadn't called them again, they knew that there was a possibility of them going to the capital city. There would be no doubt that the representatives have to be someone very capable that indirectly got involved. The best choice would be either Jason, Kevin, or Kanae.

"We're already gathering some information about the capital city. It's not like we know nothing."

"They're not enough, Kanae. I don't want you to throw your life away because of this matter," Kevin stood with his decision firmly.

Kanae pursed her lips. "Even if you say that, I won't die so easily."

"The risk is still great."

"Who do you think will be the best representatives from our city?"

Kevin didn't reply. He looked at the young woman on the bed. "We'll talk about this later. Rest first."

Looking at the man's departing back, Kanae knew that Kevin didn't want her to be in danger anymore. The journey to the capital would be filled with unknown danger, something that they had to be wary of all the time.

Wells Family's Residence

Jason felt extremely tired. He was assuming the position of control behind the shadow of these officials. Most of the time, the important decision would fall to him, making him work all day to ensure that his decision didn't yield a bad result for them.

"Young Master, Master had come," a servant scurried and reported to Jason.

Jason's movement stiffened. He couldn't understand why his father decided to meet with him so suddenly. In the past, his father would never confront him directly unless he made an irreplaceable mistake.

I understand."

Walking out of the room, Jason headed to the living room. He could see his father was sitting in a straight position, he knew that his father wanted to talk with him.

"Father," Jason called. "Is there something important?"

Wells Family Head fixated his gaze on Jason, his only son. He had never taken care of the boy directly because he was busy. What he wanted all these years was a perfect successor to inherit his place, not a son, so he never acted as a father. For the past few months, he has been paying closer attention to Jason's activity.

He couldn't be bothered with the man if it was not because he wanted Jason to fully inherit his position. Even though he still felt that the young man was lacking in several areas, those were not really big problems.

"I'm sure you know my intention of raising you by letting you free."

Jason stilled. It was not like his father let him free, but after he had finished the necessary education, his father didn't really care about his activity. In a way, it was as if he was unrestrained.

Most youngsters would use their freedom to the fullest after they were given the freedom. But it was different with Jason. He stayed still in the room and learned everything with heart. He didn't want to disobey his father even though the latter was not watching him intently anymore.

At the same time, his decision led him to lose the light in his eyes. Every single action was filled with nothing but dullness.

Wells Family Head had known about it for a long time. However, he never stepped in to help the young man because he had never tried to nurture any relationship with his son other than what he had. It would be better for the boy to learn how to stand by himself. He was merely a stranger in that boy's life, and it would never change.

When Jason divulged himself in Black Street, he thought that it was the time for the young man's downfall. The other youngsters in Wells Family were the same, they chose to pick a path that led to their destruction.

Unexpectedly, Jason survived and matured. It was not in the way that Wells Family Head expected, but it was not too bad.

The boy shone in his own way.

"Yes, Father," Jason replied solemnly.

Wells Family Head looked at Jason directly. "I only want a successor and not a son. Since you perfectly understand this, you can inherit my position and strive for a better future for Wells Family."

Jason's eyes widened. He knew that his father wanted to leave the Wells Family completely in his hand. Even though his father might not give him the position right away, he would be the one to control everything in the background. When the time was right, his father would step down formally.

"I'll do my best, Father."

"You have to do your best," Wells Family Head replied firmly. "What I want is a perfect successor that can make sure that Wells Family will not fall."

This was not the first time he uttered out his real plan to Jason. Ever since he was small, his father had taught him that he had to do everything perfectly and never disappointed the man. The young him longed for his father's attention and affection, but after years of constant treatment, he knew that it was nothing but a dream.

"Yes, Father."

"That's good that you understand," Wells Family Head remarked indifferently. He didn't show any expression of warmth and whatsoever to his only son.

Jason looked back at his father. He never understood his father because they barely spent any time with one another. Every single time, it would only end with his father giving him an order that he has to fulfill no matter what.

"Father, you may ask for a request."

Wells Family Head's eyes flickered for a moment. He looked back at Jason, who had grown up perfectly. From the past to present, he always treated this young man indifferently. His job required him to work all the time, not giving him any time with his family.

All he could give to him was a place to stay and an environment to study. Ever since the death of his wife, he didn't know how to act around Jason. And certainly, he would not show any affection and whatsoever.

With that in mind, years passed in a blink.

"I never deserve anything like that," Wells Family Head replied serenely. He took out an item and threw it to Jason, who caught it with his hand. "I'll leave that in your care."

Jason watched his father leave the living room before opening his palm. He saw a small silver key in his hand. It was the key to the safe that contained important documents for Wells Family. With this action, it was clear that his father wanted him to succeed him in taking over the family.

'I'll work hard,' Jason vowed to himself before returning back to his room.

Even though there was no feeling of family between him and his father, the latter never slighted him. He was treated well and received more than enough to fulfill his needs and learnt the best thing in the world. With what he had, he would make sure that Wells Family strives for a better future.
