Chapter 134: A DEVASTATING REVELATION

As Carl stepped through the door, shocking sounds reached his ears. This was a sound that he had never expected to hear.

Their moans and lecherous words echoed throughout the walls.

"Yes, harder! Harder...!"

"Argh! You are so good...!"

Carl froze, his mind racing as confusion wrestled with reality. Amelia was in the midst of an intimate encounter with another man.

A desperate need to identify the man rose within Carl. There was a possibility that it was his father... Though deep down, he knew that guttural voice didn’t belong to his father.

Carl’s mind didn’t work properly, but his body moved on its own, taking him to the source of the lustful noises.

Once Carl was standing in front of the door, he was certain the man was not his father. His ears were ringing painfully, and with trembling hands, he cautiously twisted the doorknob.

The sounds of their activity grew more pronounced when the door was ajar, but Carl opened it wider.

And what awaited him was a devastating show; the man in bed was not his father but a stranger with a striking black rose tattoo on his neck, and his mother was in an inappropriate position; both of her hands were tied to the bed, but she seemed to enjoy it.

Amelia was on her stomach, while the tattooed man was on top of her; thus, he was the one who caught the sight of Carl first and had the audacity to smirk, breaking the intimate moment for a while to inform the woman beneath him, "Looks like your son is watching us now." His tone was nonchalant, completely unaware of the emotional fallout within Carl.

Amelia raised her head and met Carl’s eyes. "Arrgh!" she exclaimed in a sudden realization, trying to break free from the rope that tied her in a desperate attempt to cover herself.

At least, she was not completely immoral and still had the shame to look panicked.

But for Carl, it was too late; the painful truth had already settled in.

Without a second thought, he turned on his heels and fled the house, heart racing, instinct guiding him to be away from this house.

The sight and the sound of their lascivious activities would be forever etched on his mind.

In his frustration, Carl was at a loss; he didn’t know where to go or where to seek solace. Ultimately, he chose to go to his old friend’s place...

These people were the same people who had bullied him so he could be accepted into their crowd.

It was there that one of his so-called ’friends’ offered him drugs, and this time, Carl gave in to the temptation, yearning to numb the painful emotions that engulfed him.

James continued to implore Laurel to return with him; he switched from being angry to begging her, accusing her, threatening her, and rinsing and repeating.

But Laurel stood her ground; she refused to be manipulated. James’s pleas fell on deaf ears as she disregarded his apology.

"How can you throw away our years together so easily?" he questioned, laced with an accusatory tone, as if the burden of their troubles rested solely on Laurel’s shoulders.

"I am not the one who threw it away. Don’t twist the truth!" Laurel shot back, her voice rising with indignation.

"At the very least, I want to try to fix it!" James insisted, desperation dripping from his words. "I am sorry, okay? What do you want me to do to fix this? I will do everything!"

"Your apology means nothing, and there’s nothing to fix," Laurel stated adamantly, and James recognized her unwavering resolve. There was no way to get her back. "If you really wanted to be with her, you should have told me, and I would have walked away from your life. What you have done was very cowardly."

Carl had informed James that Laurel was aware of his betrayal with Amelia, and now the truth was laid in the open.

"I thought I still loved her, but now I understand that it’s you that I want. It’s you that I need, and I regret everything. I want us, Laurel."

"There is no us, and I don’t want you anymore."

Just then, in the midst of their escalating argument, a call from the hospital pierced the tension. The call was persistent, and after James ignored several calls, in the end he picked it up.

"Is it Mr. James Starling?" A woman’s calm voice greeted him.

"Yes." James frowned.

The call revealed that Carl had overdosed. "Please, come to the hospital now."

"Where is it?!" James was shocked, and he was on the phone for another minute. When he finally ended the phone call, he turned to look at Laurel; he looked pale. "Carl is in the hospital."

Laurel’s shock was palpable upon hearing the news; even amidst her turmoil, a flicker of concern for her stepson cut through the haze of anger.

"Please, come with me... Carl is in a critical condition."

Without a second thought, both of them quickly made their way to the hospital, their conflict momentarily set aside as they hurried to be by Carl’s side.

Meanwhile, Hazel and Ranon had settled into the Leightons’ house for the night. They stayed in Ranon’s old bedroom.

The same as his bedroom in the apartment, there were not many things here. He was very practical. You would think this was only another guest bedroom.

All of them heard what happened to Carl, and now Laurel and James had left the house, and the noise from their argumentation also vanished.

Carl was Laurel’s stepson, and he was not directly connected to the Leighton family, so Denzel said nothing and acted like he didn’t know about it, but Hazel felt bad for that boy.

"I only stayed in this room for a year," Ranon answered Hazel’s curious question.

They decided to stay the night because Hazel was very sleepy and she would have a backache sleeping inside the car.

"I will take a bath first," Hazel said as she went to the bathroom, and when she was done, with a hint of mischief, Hazel, again dressed only in her undergarments, drew Ranon’s attention, eliciting an amused smirk from him.

"Are you trying to seduce me again?" he teased. "I thought you were sleepy."

Hazel merely rolled her eyes and pursed her lips in response.

"I am tired; you need to keep your dick inside your pants." Hazel climbed on the bed, but she ’accidentally’ rubbed herself against him.

Ranon let out a dark chuckle. "My dick is fine, as long as you keep your hands to yourself."

To be honest, it was Hazel who had sparked their late-night intimate moment, and often, Hazel would blame it on her pregnancy hormone.

"I am sleepy," Hazel said and then snuggled against him shamelessly.

"Stay still if you are tired," Ranon murmured, his hold tightening around her. "You are making me excited for no reason." A soft giggle escaped Hazel; the warmth of his breath gave her comfort.

As the night wore on, they found solace in each other. Ranon pulled her closer as they drifted off to sleep.

Yet, the comfort didn’t last long when Hazel got her nightmare. In her dream, she remembered how cold the water was and the pain on her chest when the bullet pierced through her body.

It was suffocating and terrifying.

Hazel woke up with a start and wiped her face. She was sweating because Ranon hugged her so close, and his body heat made her too warm.

In the quiet that enveloped the room, Hazel quietly distangled herself from Ranon and then reached for her phone; she went to the room next door after she was sure Ranon was deep in sleep.

She called Olivia, adopting River’s identity. She needed to find out what happened with the Lozen and the Barlowe families.

It was hard to get access to information about them during her honeymoon.

"What do you want?" Olivia’s sleepy voice greeted Hazel; she sounded very grumpy, and this brought a smile to her lips.

She liked to bother her and cause her discomfort and annoyance.

"Give me an update about Lozen and Barlowe."

"No."

Olivia hung up the phone, but it didn’t deter Hazel as she called her over and over until she picked it up. "Tell me the latest news you know about them."

"For God’s sake, River! Can you be normal for a minute? My working hours are from nine to five; call me back during that time!"

Olivia then hung up on her again, but Hazel repeated what she did until she picked up and then told her everything that she wanted to know.

Olivia wasted no time delivering updates, mentioning that Arthur had come to visit her to ask the same question that Arlo asked her and that Aubrey had just been discharged from the hospital.

"Done. That’s all. If you want to make me a spy for you, tell me your address so I can send you the invoice," Olivia grumbled because her sleeping time was disturbed.

But before Hazel could say anything, she heard Marcus’s voice unexpectedly break through their conversation.

"Did you get back together with him?" Hazel asked, "I thought the beating was enough to make you think clearly."

"I don’t need your lecture." Olivia then cut the call short, knowing what she was going to say about this. She had a fight with Lyle, and that was enough; she didn’t want anyone to tell her what she should do.

"Damn that stupid girl. She will get herself killed one day." Hazel clicked her tongue in annoyance.
