Chapter 137: HAZEL’S ATTEMPT TO SEDUCE HER HUSBAND

The air was suddenly filled by the harsh sound of gunfire with the order from Jack.

Because of the proximity, there was no chance of missing their targets. Within seconds, the two men lay lifelessly on the ground; their blood oozed out from the small hollows of the bullets on their bodies.

Positioned in the secluded backyard of the Barlowe residence, this area was inaccessible to outsiders; therefore, no one could come without Jack knowing it.

"Burn their bodies," Jack ordered with dispassion.

The people ordered to burn the bodies looked disturbingly callous, following Jack’s commands without a second thought as they began pouring gasoline over the two corpses.

Fire licked the two dead bodies and soon after engulfed them like a blanket.

During this grim process, Michael came home and approached his father while the flames devoured the remains of the corpses.

Such scenes were not unusual for him; he had grown up surrounded by these cruel situations.

By the time Michael arrived, he could barely recognize the charred bodies, and even more, he found himself indifferent to their fate.

"What happened to your face?" Jack asked, his brow furrowed with concern.

"Nothing," Michael replied coldly, dismissing him with a wave of his hand. "There is something important I need to tell you."

Michael could no longer hide his feelings. He glanced around and insisted that his father send everyone away.

The acrid smell of burning flesh was suffocating, but Michael couldn’t care less.

Once they were alone, he revealed what he knew about River and his suspicion that Arlo was the one who was responsible for harming River.

"You need to do something about this." Michael’s voice was laced with anger by the end of his statement.

However, his father’s reaction was oddly calm and composed.

"What else do we need to do?" Jack asked emotionlessly.

"What?" Michael had anticipated a furious response, expecting Jack to be enraged by Arlo’s actions. Then it struck him: Jack had already known. "You knew about it all along, didn’t you?"

The realization washed over him, leaving him in disbelief as he turned his gaze back to the burning bodies nearby.

"There was an attack on the Leighton family, and it appears to be another failed attempt by the Lozens," Michael spoke absentmindedly. "As far as I know, there was no such order from the Lozens."

His eyes narrowed as he scrutinized his father.

"There were two assassins who managed to escape," he stated, shaking his head in disbelief. "Is it them?" He pointed at the burning bodies.

"Yes." Jack didn’t deny it at all.

He had often said they needed to eliminate every trace of their dirty dealings. He told Arlo and Michael the same thing.

"No way..." Michael was taken aback. He just learned that his father was on the path to betraying the Lozen family. "No way... There is no way you will do this..."

Jack urged him to remain silent and recited the same story he had told Arlo that River was out for revenge.

"How do you plan to escape her wrath?" Jack patted his shoulder. "Knowing her, she will take down the Lozen family, and we will not go down with them."

"Maybe you can apologize to her..." Michael suggested, even though he knew how silly it sounded. This was not a problem that you could fix with an apology.

"Apologize?" Jack scowled. "Do you really believe she will accept that?"

His father was right. Michael knew how River was. She wouldn’t let go of her target.

"River is out there, planning a revenge on us, and she knew everything. Every dirty deal and all the skeletons in our closets. Do you think she will be generous enough not to use that knowledge for her advantage?"

Michael felt torn. On one hand, he was furious on behalf of River, because it was his stupid brother’s fault; on the other, loyalty to his family complicated his emotions, and he couldn’t ignore the logic in his father’s reasoning.

"But the Lozens and the Barlowes are always together; we walk in the same path."

"Probably, this is the time to part ways."

"No, you are not going anywhere." Ranon kissed Hazel’s cheek before leaving for work, adamant that she stay in the apartment after the attack at the Leighton residence.

Hazel went through a whole ass interrogation because she killed one of the assassins; she should thank Ema, who made things look worse for her until Ranon was pissed, and he pulled his connection to stop that.

Right now, Ranon wanted her to stay in their apartment for the time being.

Ranon had become increasingly protective of Hazel, forbidding her from going out without her bodyguards and considering adding extra protection for her.

"I will take Nolu and Yara with me," Hazel insisted as she followed Ranon out of their bedroom. Renna was already there, holding a tie that she handed to Hazel for her to put on Ranon.

Hazel took the tie and fastened it around Ranon’s neck, gripping it tightly enough to force him to bend down and meet her eyes.

"No," Ranon replied firmly, kissing both of her eyes lightly.

Meanwhile, Renna smiled happily at their playful exchange, delighted to see how well Ranon treated Hazel. After everything that had happened with the Rose family, she believed that Hazel truly deserved this affection.

"You will not go anywhere for at least a week, until I take care of this problem," Ranon compromised.

For now, she would be confined to the apartment.

"Fine." Hazel was not pleased, but she realized she couldn’t argue with him.

However, two days later, Hazel decided to surprise Ranon at the office, bringing him lunch.

"What is this?" Ranon raised his brows when he saw Hazel approaching him with a mischievous grin.

She held up the lunchbox and playfully shook it.

"Doing my wifely duty to feed my husband," she declared, placing the lunchbox on the table before sitting on the same table right in front of Ranon; she rested her knees on the spot between his legs as he sat on the chair.

Her bold move drew a smirk to his lips; he could easily guess what his wife was really after.

Hazel was wearing a red bodycon dress that hugged her figure and reached her knees. Her bump was shielded by her outer.

Ranon couldn’t help but notice her alluring figure.

She was clearly tempting him, and he knew precisely what she wanted.

"I want to eat lunch with my husband," Hazel said sweetly. "It’s kind of boring to stay in the apartment alone, and I missed you."

No, she wanted to learn about the investigation related to the previous attack.

"Alright, we will eat, but we are not discussing the attack."

Hearing his words, Hazel scowled. He saw through her intentions far too easily.

"That’s not fair." Hazel pushed away the lunchbox. She didn’t dress up like this with the attempt to seduce Ranon only for him to deny her.

"I thought you came here to make sure I have my lunch." Ranon caressed her thighs playfully.

"My bad. Upon closer look, I think you need to go on a diet."

Ranon laughed to see her annoyance, but Hazel had another agenda for her visit. Once she finished her lunch with Ranon, she sought Lucian.

She reminded him about their bet and informed him that she would need his assistance next month at her family company for a meeting with the shareholders.

"I thought I had paid for my debt when you asked me to draft the document for your father." Lucian complained.

"That one was a favor," Hazel retorted with a sweet smile.

Marcus went to see Nelson again because he was going on another mission with him. This was the job that he had impulsively agreed to when he took on too many jobs.

"I don’t want you to go," Olivia said, pulling a blanket around her naked body as she watched Marcus put on his pants. It was still in the middle of the night, and she hated it when he left to finish his jobs, fearing for his safety.

"I need to go. I promise that once I finish these jobs, I will be free of it all," Marcus assured her. He had tried to explain this to Olivia several times: he was committed to completing the jobs he had taken on, and then he would be free and let go of that kind of life.

Yet, despite her awareness of the situation, Olivia remained unhappy.

"What will you do to get out of that life? Can’t you just compensate for the jobs you can’t finish?" she pressed, her concern evident.

From the beginning, Olivia believed those people were bad for Marcus, and she wanted him to have nothing to do with them.

However, Marcus didn’t heed her warnings. He had to earn a living, and this was the only way he knew how. It had become his identity, and Olivia despised that.

"Don’t worry about it," Marcus said reassuringly. "It won’t take long, I promise."

Olivia got off the bed and hugged him tightly; she buried her face against his chest and breathed deeply while Marcus caressed her back gently.

"I love you, Marcus." Olivia felt very vulnerable and stupid at this time. "But this is really the last time. If you broke your promise or hurt me, you will never see me again."

"I promise to make things right. I will keep my promise." Marcus kissed her head. "I love you too, Olivia. I need to go now," Marcus whispered.
