Chapter 335: THE UNIVERSE IS AGAINST HER

River didn’t find the benefit of spending the night in this hotel room when she could barely close her eyes. Her mind kept wandering, thinking about where she had met Ranon for the first time, since the only place she could remember was here.

River was already awake in the early morning, and when Cam came to wake her and take her for breakfast, she opened the door at the first knock, as if she were about to go out.

"Let’s go. I don’t want to have breakfast here; we can eat on the way." River waved her hand as she stepped out of the room. "What are you waiting for?" River looked back because Cam didn’t follow her.

On the other hand, Cam snapped out of his daydream. He was surprised to realize that Mr. Leighton was correct. River would likely be very impatient, and she would suggest skipping breakfast.

"No, you can’t skip breakfast. Mr. Leighton had emphasized this to me. I will not drive you to the location if you don’t eat your breakfast."

"I can drive myself there." River was annoyed. Cam was loyal to Ranon. Usually, those traits made her feel relieved; after all, he was a reliable person. But this time, everything he did was annoying her.

But to River’s surprise, Cam stretched out his hand to give her the car key. "Here, but I am not going to tell you the destination." When River looked very pissed off, Cam then hastily added. "Mr. Leighton’s order."

River closed her eyes as if she were summoning her inner peace. She took a deep breath and let out a long exhale.

"Fine." She opened her eyes again. "Let’s eat the whole thing. I feel like I can eat the whole chicken."

River stomped her feet impatiently as they walked toward the breakfast area, while Cam followed behind her.

He became even more confused with the dynamic between his boss and this woman. A handful of people knew about what happened between Mr. Leighton and his first wife here, including Cam.

And since yesterday, all of the destinations were related to Hazel, even the last one, but River didn’t look bothered; in a way, she enjoyed it.

One more thing that had become known about Hazel was her love for lamb chops, and now this woman showed the same interest. Was it a coincidence? How could they be similar?

Cam shook his head. He tried not to think too much about it, but he couldn’t get rid of this question in his head.

And somehow, he blurted out.

"Hazel?"

River stopped walking. She glanced over her shoulder and smiled cheekily. "Yes?"

The fact that River responded naturally to the way Cam called her made the man stagger two steps back. River laughed heartily when she saw this reaction.

However, River said nothing as she continued walking. Her mood improved significantly, and Cam was too afraid to ask further. That was impossible, right?

Cam shut his mouth when he followed her to eat. He didn’t sit at the same table as River, but his eyes were fixed on her the whole meal. River felt as though the intensity of his stare might cause a hole to develop on her back.

Thankfully, half an hour later, they were already on the road, but still, Cam remained silent.

"I am thirsty. Can we stop at a convenience store?" River asked after they had been on the road for two hours. She didn’t know where they were going, but she was sure they were heading to Aspen City.

Had she previously met Ranon in Aspen City? Did he see her here? Probably, they encountered each other in one of the events that River rarely attended.

There were only a few events that she attended, as Aubrey was always their father’s first choice. Even fewer were the occasions when she and Ranon were at the same events, yet River still couldn’t recall which one it might have been.

"I will fill the gas too."

Cam then stopped at the gas station. River went to the convenience store there, while Cam filled the gas.

Even when she entered the store, she still could feel his gaze on her back. River then turned around and said sweetly to him. "Stop staring at me like that. I am not a ghost."

Cam immediately averted his eyes and busied himself with his phone.

Seeing this, River chuckled silently. She went inside the store and took four bottles of water, just in case, because she was clueless about how long they would be on the road. She didn’t want to make an extra stop and delay this trip.

This morning, after she received a sweet text from Ranon, River tried to call him, but he didn’t pick up. He only texted her back that he was decorating the place with Ashlyn.

Ugh. He kept her on her toes. Ranon had done that often, honestly, but this time River was agitated.

However, it was as if the universe were against her; when River was about to pay for her bottles of water, something happened that made her patience run very thin.

"Hands on the table!"

"You, hand over your wallet and your jewelry!"

Two young men in black masks entered the convenience store, with one holding a pocket knife and the other holding a gun.

From the sound of their voices and their gestures, they could be teenagers, looking for an adrenaline rush by committing robbery in broad daylight.

"What are you staring at?! Give me your wallet and take off your jewelry!" The masked man with the knife barked an order to River.

"You! Give me all the cash that you have. Quick, or I will blow your head!" The other man pointed his gun at the cashier, who was a young pregnant woman.

"Y—Yes... Yes. Please, don’t shoot," she said between her tears. Her trembling hands failed her in her attempts to open the drawer where she put the money.

"Hurry!"

River squinted her eyes at the other man and realized one thing: the gun was... not a real thing. Her real threat was only this pocket knife that was directed at her face. Well, it could not be considered a threat, though.

"Here," River said. She put down her wallet on the counter table. "You scared her."

"Shut up!" The man swayed his pocket knife threateningly at River. "Hand me your phone and your necklace too!"

Ranon had prepared another dress for her; therefore, it was not convenient for River to move.

"No. Take the wallet and leave. There is enough money there for you to buy weed," River said nonchalantly, and she could see that what she said was right.

"Do you dare to defy me?! I am going to slit your throat!"

River raised her brows. "Do it."

It wasn’t like River didn’t want to give them her jewelry because it was expensive, but... There was no way she would hand the jewelry that Ranon gave to her to these imbeciles. More so, her necklace... This necklace was Olivia’s last gift for her.

"You!" The man raised his hand again; his movement was clumsy without any clear direction. He didn’t mean to kill River and only intended to scare her by hurting her a bit.

However, they should know better than to hold a weapon recklessly.

River’s eyes hardened as she took a side step and then grabbed the first man by his wrist. She put enough pressure on his wrist, which made him scream in pain and drop the knife.

But before the pocket knife could touch the ground, River snatched it mid-air by the handle and threw it at the other man’s gun. Her aim was impeccable; the toy gun dropped with a clattering sound.

"Plastic," River mumbled.

Even though this toy gun looked real to the commoners who saw it, the clattering sound gave it away.

River then smashed the first man’s head against the countertop. He was not going to die, but he would get a concussion at best.

After River took down the first man, she went to the other man, who was ready to fight her, knowing he had no other choice.

Yet, River was faster. She kicked him on the shin and punched his face as hard as she could.

When the second man fell to the ground, River kicked his butt a few times. This was personal, since she needed a platform to vent her frustration because they had delayed her trip.

Right at that time, Cam went inside the convenience store to check on River because she had taken a long time. Only then did he see what made her late.

"What are you doing? You can’t bully other people like this!" Cam immediately checked the first man, just in case he was dead, but thankfully, he was only losing his consciousness.

"Bully them?" The corner of River’s lips twitched. "I don’t do such a thing. They are robbers." River gave one last kick to the second man and then took her wallet again.

And then, Cam realized what was going on, especially when the young cashier cried so hard.

"Cam, call someone to handle this." River then shifted her attention to the cashier. "It’s okay; they will not hurt you. Can I pay for these bottles? I am in a hurry."

River wanted to avoid being there when the police arrived and having to spend another hour of interrogation.

However, the cashier hugged River tightly. "Thank you, thank you. I was so scared."

I want to leave... River thought sullenly.
