Unholy Player-Chapter 182: New Gear
Chapter 182: New Gear
While he sent his otherworld body to continue swordplay training with Lucen, Adyr’s body on Earth began inspecting the new equipment spread across his room.
Stacks of boxes in various sizes surrounded him. He reached for the long, narrow metal case first—about one meter long and sixty centimeters wide—and released the latches. Opening the lid, he wasn’t surprised to find exactly what he’d expected: two swords cradled in deep red velvet, perfectly secured.
"They look really stylish," he murmured, his gaze fixed on the blades.
The swords were similar in design yet distinct in their details. The first was entirely smoke gray, its grip and blade coated in a matte finish that reflected virtually no light. The weapon was shorter than his usual swords, at most fifty centimeters in length. Its hilt was wrapped in dark leather for a firm, comfortable hold, and a compact guard extended outward.
The blade appeared to be made from a dense carbon-infused steel alloy, chosen for its durability and resistance to wear. A specialized ceramic-based surface treatment gave the dark gray color its light-absorbing, non-reflective quality without compromising the weapon’s strength.
Unlike a standard crossguard, this one was shaped like a hooked cross, the sharp angles creating an aggressive silhouette that felt like it could just as easily catch an opponent’s blade as tear into flesh.
The sword was designed exclusively for right-handed use, its materials and design focused entirely on durability and defense.
The package actually contained several types of swords. Since Adyr hadn’t fully revealed his sword style to the researchers, they appeared to have created multiple designs they thought might suit him. From these, he selected two that fit his needs, choosing the one for his right hand specifically for its defensive qualities, which aligned well with his current talent, [Sword Art of Existence].
The other sword in the case was different: unlike the first, which was gray, this one was completely black and seemed to absorb light rather than reflect it. It was about ten centimeters longer than the first and had no guard—its grip and blade flowed seamlessly together, as if the handle was simply a continuation of the blade.
This one was designed specifically for left-handed use—double-edged and focused entirely on offense.
Adyr held the two swords in his hands and took a few practiced swings. When he settled into his usual stance, his right hand gripped the dark gray sword, positioned near his chest. Its short length and well-designed hilt guard made it a versatile tool for defense.
While the sword meant for guarding drew immediate attention, the pitch-black sword in his left hand, appearing as if it could vanish into the darkness, was slightly longer. Casually hanging by his side, its slim build and light-absorbing black surface gave it an almost unnoticed presence, like it was waiting patiently for a stealthy strike.
They are surprisingly precise. Adyr felt satisfied with his new weapons. Though improvements were possible, they already exceeded his expectations.
Although the swords had been customized for him, the researchers possessed only limited data on his swordplay style. Their designs were largely based on his general posture, preferences, and subtle inferences from small details. Yet, seeing how close they had come to accuracy clearly demonstrated both their skill and the meticulous attention they’d invested.
Each sword came with a sheath designed for diagonal wear across the back.
Among the packages, another item caught his eye—a small shield with a shape reminiscent of bat wings, tapering into an oval form at the bottom. It was coated entirely in a light-absorbing matte black finish.
Like his previous gear, the shield was engineered to mount over the sword sheaths on his back. Its upper edge extended to cover the shoulders, while the lower section was reinforced to protect his lower back and spine. When strapped on, the shield gave the impression of an armored exoskeletal structure layered over his body, enhancing both defense and presence.
Before reaching the most intriguing part of the package, Adyr opened a smaller case containing a set of new throwing knives.
The knives ranged in color from nearly black to a lighter shade of gray, arranged in a gradient inside the case. This color variation wasn’t just cosmetic—each tone indicated a distinct feature.
The fully black knives were standard models—sharper than his usual blades but otherwise ordinary.
The knives with a slightly lighter gray tone—shifting away from black—featured a critical upgrade: miniature explosives embedded in their handles, activated by a small pin mechanism. Reviewing the product descriptions and demonstration videos, Adyr confirmed these charges were far more powerful than any grenade-like devices he had previously used.
Instead of conventional gunpowder, these explosives utilized cutting-edge chemical compounds, allowing minimal amounts within the throwing knives to produce powerful blasts. This innovation meant he no longer needed to carry extra grenades. In situations where his Spark skills were insufficient or when conserving energy was crucial, these explosive knives would provide an effective alternative.
A shade lighter than the explosive knives were those designed for flash effects. On impact—or triggered manually with a small pin on the handle—they would emit a blinding burst of light, calibrated to dazzle and disorient anyone nearby.
Next were the knives tipped with a fast-acting tranquilizer. According to the shop’s description, each carried enough sedative to incapacitate a second-generation STF operative within minutes, relaxing their muscles until they went limp. Depending on the target’s endurance, the effect lasted between one and three hours. By Adyr’s standards, STF operatives weren’t much of a threat anymore, but the poison was still useful. Even a brief drop of strength could shift the tide in combat.
The last type featured an anchoring mechanism. Upon impact with a solid surface, tiny hooks deployed from the blade’s tip to lock it in place. Combined with a strong cord, this would give Adyr a range of tactical options—whether to scale walls, rig improvised traps, or swing across gaps.
Satisfied with the assortment, Adyr finally moved on to the most important item.
"I just don’t know how they managed to make this," he murmured as he opened the last box.
Inside was his new uniform.
