Chapter 54: Chapter 54

Eleanor

I stared at Liam, my heart pounding in my chest as I watched how his gaze moved between Jake and I slowly. His eyes then flicked back to mine and I immediately remembered his threat to Jake over the phone that day.

Oh fuck.

Was he going to make a scene now?

Just when I had almost succeeded in convincing Jake that we could actually be friends again.

I pressed my lips into a thin line, hoping Liam could see the desperation and imploring look in my eyes, and not do anything stupid.

But knowing him... that was wishful thinking.

His gaze didn’t leave mine, sharp and unreadable, but I could tell from the way his jaw tightened that something was already unraveling behind the calm.

A storm. A reaction. A fight.

Definitely something reckless.

I swallowed, trying to silently will him to stay put. To let it go. To not be Liam. To not be Alex. But his fingers curled into fists by his sides...

And just like that, I knew.

He’d already made up his mind.

But the next words that left his lips, completely took me by surprise. "There you are sugarplum..." a small smile played on his lips as he walked into the closet, leaving the door slightly ajar.

He then walked over to me sliding his arm around my waist and pulling me closer with that surprisingly genuine looking smile still on his face.

Holy crap.

I must be seeing and hearing things now. I better go get my eyes and ears checked.

"I’ve been looking for you everywhere." He leaned in, pressing a small peck to my cheek.

We’d been doing a lot of that and the nickname calling lately so that didn’t really surprise me.

What did however, was the fact that he wasn’t reacting to....

This.

I blinked at him, trying to see if I could get a glimpse of what was going on in that head of his, but unfortunately I got nothing.

I turned to Jake who looked just as stunned as I was. But then I remembered that I was Liam’s girlfriend, and stuff like this wasn’t supposed to surprise me. So I quickly feigned indifference... or normalcy rather. frёewebnoѵēl.com

But before I could come up with a reply to what the hell he had just said right now, he spoke again. "Is this the friend you were telling me about?"

I tried to hide my surprise as I glanced at Jake before shifting my gaze back to him.

What the hell was going on?

I mean I don’t understand why he was doing any of this. The normal Liam I know would definitely be glaring at Jake now and telling him to stay away from me if not he’ll beat him up or something.

But now he was chill about it? And even smiling?

I mean after finding us both locked up in a closet, he’s not doing anything about it?

Liam’s grip tightened around me, giving my waist a small squeeze—and that was when I realized that I hadn’t answered his question.

"Uh yeah..." I said with a weak smile.

Liam then let out a small chuckle before he reached out to shake him, but Jake’s brows just furrowed even more as he stood there looking confused and... doubtful?

When Jake didn’t take Liam’s arm, he then let out an awkward breathy laugh—one that didn’t quite reach his eyes or rather it did, but I could tell it was still fake.

And then I felt it.

The subtle shift in his fingers and how they curled tighter around my waist. It wasn’t enough to hurt me or anything, but it was enough to speak volumes.

I certainly didn’t need anyone to tell me to know that Liam was furious right now, though he still had that sweet deceptive smile on his face.

My question was...

Why had he not snapped yet?

"Well... you must still be upset about our call that day." He tilted his head slightly as he dropped his free arm to his side. "Look, I’m sorry for that... I wasn’t really in a good mood that day and I wanted to have Theadora all to myself so that’s why I snapped like that."

This time, I couldn’t hide my surprise—my eyes flew open as I turned to Liam.

Did... did he just apologize?

To Jake?!

What in the world was happening in this damn closet?

Even though I knew he was pretending, this—this was too much.

I whipped my head around to see Jake’s reaction only for his gaze to lock with mine. And to be honest, I didn’t even know if I was supposed to add something to what Liam said or just stay quiet.

"I’m also sorry about that day I bumped into you outside that arcade, that was totally my fault." He added when Jake didn’t say anything. "And I also get it if you don’t want to forgive me though, I would be mad too if I were in your shoes. Maybe I can make it up to you some other time?"

Apparently, that one struck a chord with Jake, because his brows shot up and his expression shifted from skeptical to surprised, yet slightly curious.

Well, who could blame him? I was the so-called girlfriend of this human here and I still didn’t know what was going on or why he was doing this.

"Uh it’s fine." Jake finally spoke. "You don’t have to worry about that. Thea was just talking to me about it anyway..."

I stiffened beneath Liam’s arm as Jake’s words reached my ears.

Oh heavens. Please take me.

"I didn’t know you’d also apologize." Jake said, unaware of the fury that was probably—scratch that—definitely going to be unleashed when we would be alone. "So it’s fine, really."

"Oh..." Liam’s grip tightened around my waist, confirming my thoughts—and this time it did hurt.

But I had to act okay, so Jake wouldn’t notice.

I had to fake it.

"Well I could always count on her to fix my messes for me." Liam turned to me with a smile and I felt a chill run down my spine. "Right babe?"

"Sure, always." I hesitated a bit before answering as I needed to find my voice.

"Yeah, you’re in great hands." Jake said in a dull yet somewhat disappointed tone and with a weak smile. "Um if you two would excuse me, I have somewhere I’m supposed to be right now... so, I’m gonna go. See y’all later?" The question didn’t fully leave his mouth before he started moving towards the door.

Guess he found this whole thing awkward after all.

The door creaked on its hinges and stayed ajar as Jake slipped out, his gaze flicking to mine for the briefest second—a look that was equal parts confusion and something I couldn’t quite make out. It was enough to make my stomach drop, a cold, sinking weight settling deep inside me. Then he was gone, the faint echo of his retreating footsteps lingering in the tense air he left behind.

Then slowly, almost in unison, Liam and I turned to face each other.

The easy smile he’d worn seconds ago was gone, stripped clean from his face like it had never been there at all.

His hand was still anchored to my waist, fingers flexed just enough for me to feel the tension coiled beneath his skin. It was like standing too close to an open flame, the heat of his palm searing straight through the thin fabric of my shirt.

I swallowed hard, my pulse drumming in my ears.

Yup... no mistaking it—he was furious.

And from the way his piercing blue gaze locked on mine, I had a sinking feeling I was about to find out exactly how furious.
