Village Doctor's Women-Chapter 205: This project, I think it’s feasible.
"This show isn’t something you arranged with your connections, is it?" Wang Jian was highly skeptical about the program’s authenticity.
"How could it be!" Cai Qiong quickly denied, her voice rising. "Didn’t the TV station come to film the poverty alleviation project a while ago? Paigou Village is a prime example, and you’re the rare village doctor here, so of course you caught their attention. That’s perfectly reasonable, isn’t it?"
It made sense, but in his mind, shouldn’t medical documentaries be filmed in large hospital outpatient departments? That would be far more reasonable, wouldn’t it?
Wang Jian looked at the excited Cai Qiong and decided against voicing his true thoughts. "But I barely get any patients here on a given day. What could they possibly film?"
"Well..." Cai Qiong’s excitement faded as she realized Wang Jian had a point. She frowned thoughtfully before finally saying, "We’ll just have to see when the production team arrives."
Cai Qiong shot Wang Jian an exasperated look, too bothered to explain any further.
In truth, she and Xu Qian both understood something about Wang Jian. He wasn’t afraid of any trouble when it came to treating patients, but outside of that, he hated complications more than anything. When it came to matters not directly related to medicine, Wang Jian would almost subconsciously find reasons or excuses to avoid them if he could. This was something he might not have even noticed about himself, but Cai Qiong and Xu Qian saw it clearly.
Xu Qian, in particular, had understood this when Wang Jian first returned home. He wasn’t the type to stir up trouble; otherwise, he never would have fled the city to come back to the village. He was afraid of complications.
Yet, these two women didn’t want to just watch Wang Jian remain in the village and fade into obscurity. The day they watched him practice medicine, the idea sparked for both Xu Qian and Cai Qiong. They went back and hashed out a plan together. That was how this arrangement came to be. Whether Wang Jian liked it or not, the two of them were determined to see it through.
If all else failed, they could go to the town or even the city to hold a free clinic. Cai Qiong certainly wasn’t worried about not having anything to film.
While Cai Qiong was discussing these matters with Wang Jian, Angel was presenting her proposal to the production director.
As an intern, Angel normally wouldn’t have the opportunity to discuss something like this with the production director. This was especially true for a government-mandated project; an intern simply didn’t have the influence to be involved. But Angel not only led the proposal but also dragged the photographer along to the director’s office, clearly poised to secure the project.
"Xiao Qi, it seems you’ve already thought of everything. You’re clearly determined to win this."
The speaker was a gaunt man in a grey, British-style striped suit. His hair, however, was unkempt, receding into a prominent M-shape. That, combined with the dark circles under his eyes, made him look at least forty years old. As the production director, he controlled the lifeblood of the television station’s programming.
Yang Zhongyuan smiled. His expression made it clear he was familiar with Angel, and not just in a professional capacity.
He glanced at the documentary proposal Angel had handed him and said, "You’ve been back from abroad for a while now, always out shooting on location. Why the sudden interest in producing your own show? I offered you a spot on that variety show, but you turned it down. What’s with the sudden enthusiasm?"
"That variety show was just a copy of Mango TV’s format. It was boring," Angel pouted. Seeing Yang Zhongyuan begin to read her proposal, she moved to a sofa and added casually, "If I’m going to make something, I want it to be meaningful and thoughtful."
"Like a documentary?" Yang Zhongyuan was already looking through the proposal. He saw that her plan was for a documentary aligned with the current government mandate, so he began to read more carefully.
As for that show she mentioned, the one like Mango TV’s, it was the network’s current ace—a hit variety show that drew massive ratings. Only someone like Angel would look down on it; anyone else would kill for a spot.
Yang Zhongyuan scoffed internally but didn’t dwell on it. With Angel’s education, abilities, and—most importantly—her family background, she never had to worry about finding a project.
"This direction..." Having read about half of it, Yang Zhongyuan had grasped Angel’s idea. "Indeed, it’s quite interesting and aligns well with the directives from above these past couple of years. There’s just one problem..."
Before he could finish, Angel interjected, "You’re worried there won’t be enough usable footage, or that what we shoot won’t be broadcast-friendly?"
Yang Zhongyuan nodded, impressed by her foresight. Then she continued, "I’ve already thought of that. I plan to gather material from all over the country. That should be enough for a ten-episode series." 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶
Hearing her mention a nationwide scope, Yang Zhongyuan nodded again. Her plan aligned perfectly with his own thoughts. In fact, the moment he saw her proposed direction, he had started instinctively mapping it out: how to shoot it, what problems they would face, and how to solve them. With more than ten years of experience in his position, he’d seen every kind of proposal and problem imaginable. It had become second nature.
He knew that if Angel was this passionate about the proposal, she would find a way to make it happen even if he rejected it—even if that meant filming it all herself.
And this proposal... it really does have potential.
Yang Zhongyuan closed the proposal, came out from behind his desk, and walked over to the sofa. "If you’re confident, then give it a shot," he said to Angel. "It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a proposal this meaningful and uplifting."
"Director Zhang just wrapped up the poverty alleviation project, so he should be free for this."
"Director Zhang?" Angel’s eyes lit up. Director Zhang Rongsheng was the very director she had been assisting. She knew him to be capable and a no-nonsense professional, unlike the directors who just fooled around. What’s more, Director Zhang was a veteran in the documentary field and a master of its narrative techniques. Angel was thrilled. "That’s perfect!"
"Alright then, let’s get everyone together for dinner tonight. I see you’ve listed Huang Long and his crew in the proposal, so let’s call them all. I remember Huang Long has been with the station for years. He’s skilled and you two know each other, so let him lead the camera team. There shouldn’t be any issues."
Seeing that Yang Zhongyuan had arranged everything, Angel happily nodded in agreement.
The project was off to a good start. However, to be officially greenlit, it still needed to go through a network meeting and get signed off by various department heads before the team could be formally assembled. Yang Zhongyuan couldn’t decide everything alone, but based on his understanding of the leadership, he didn’t foresee any problems, which was why he spoke to Angel as he did.
After all, the station head’s surname was also An...
Thinking of this, Yang Zhongyuan’s thoughts went even further.
"Xiao Qi," Yang Zhongyuan suddenly called out with a smile as Angel was about to leave. "How about you take charge of the filming in Paigou Village? If this Doctor Wang Jian you mentioned is really as skilled as you say, that segment will be a major highlight. You studied directing and screenwriting abroad; leading a team to shoot a single episode’s worth of content should be no trouble for you."
"This project will probably be on a tight schedule, shooting in various places simultaneously, so don’t be so quick to refuse."
This was an unexpected delight, especially with Uncle Yang putting it that way.
Angel immediately agreed; it would be foolish not to.
It was her proposal, after all. She was prepared to accept any gossip about her using connections. As long as her final work was powerful enough, any complaints would just sour into jealousy.
