Chapter 250: 244 Lu You’s Reaction (Additional Update)

Wang Jian had already mentioned that the Ginseng King was toxic. Whether the man listened or not was no longer his concern.

After getting the Ginseng King, Xiao Hei insisted on leaving, ignoring Xu Qian’s invitation to stay for dinner.

Only after seeing Xiao Hei leave did Wang Jian discuss his suspicions about the man with Xu Qian, which left her with a lingering sense of fear.

"Next time that Xiao Hei comes, don’t be so polite," Xu Qian said, patting her chest. She glanced around nervously, worried he might suddenly return. "Xiao Jian, you should stay away from people like that in the future."

Thinking it over, Xu Qian still felt that wasn’t enough and added, "Scoundrels like that shouldn’t be treated at all."

"I never intended to let him in. Weren’t you the one who invited him inside?"

Wang Jian laughed. "When a doctor is busy saving lives, who has time to consider if the person is good or bad? The medical system isn’t the police force. You think we can tell who the bad guys are just by looking at their insurance cards?"

"But... but..." Xu Qian was at a loss for words, as she had a strong dislike for anyone involved in the criminal underworld. "That Xiao Hei just doesn’t look like a good person. If I hadn’t seen you talking with him at the door and assumed he was your friend, I would never have let you bring him in."

"Don’t worry," Wang Jian comforted her, taking her small hand. "I know what I’m doing. I even gave the Ginseng King away directly, so it won’t cause any trouble."

Sighing, Xu Qian acknowledged that Wang Jian wasn’t greedy and had foreseen the day’s events. This made her feel both relieved and proud. "I’m just worried they’ll come looking for trouble with you."

Wang Jian chuckled confidently. "I’m no easy target. If they dare to mess with me, I’ll make them understand the meaning of regret."

This villain-like boast made Xu Qian giggle. She paid him no mind and returned to her cooking.

Xiao Hei, holding the Ginseng King that Wang Jian had given him, still found the situation somewhat surreal.

Sitting in his car, he turned the Ginseng King over and over in his hands. He hadn’t expected to get it so quickly and hadn’t even prepared a container for it.

Wang Jian had originally kept it in a special red sandalwood box, but that box was quite expensive, so he hadn’t handed it over. He only gave Xiao Hei the Ginseng King itself.

Xiao Hei pulled out his phone, made a call to Lu You, and then drove away.

Meanwhile, in the presidential suite of the four-star hotel where Chairman Kang and his group were staying, Lu You wore a bemused expression. Beside him was Hu Ziyuan, who had accompanied him back from overseas.

Lu You had adopted Hu Ziyuan from an orphanage when he first arrived in the United States. Hu Ziyuan was only five years old at the time and was practically raised by Lu You, whom he saw as a foster father. Although Lu You always insisted on being called ’Uncle Jiu,’ it didn’t affect their father-son-like bond.

Noticing Lu You’s expression, Hu Ziyuan took the phone from his hand and asked, "What did Xiao Hei say, Uncle Jiu? You look puzzled. Did something go wrong?"

"No..." Lu You took a breath of oxygen, removed his mask, and said with a strange look on his face, "Quite the opposite. The Ginseng King has been retrieved. Xiao Hei said the man was very cooperative and handed it over without much fuss."

"Hm?" Hearing this, Hu Ziyuan also wore a curious expression. "That doctor... so young, yet he gave up something that could make him rich so easily. He’s not a simple man."

"Indeed." Lu You coughed lightly, his eyes twinkling with amusement. "I didn’t expect such an interesting young man to come from such a remote little village. Unmoved by wealth..."

After taking another breath of oxygen, Lu You continued, "And there’s something even more interesting."

"What is it?" Seeing the smile on Lu You’s face, Hu Ziyuan grew curious. "It’s been a long time since I’ve seen you smile like this."

"According to the information you gathered," Lu You smiled, "that kid is a village doctor, right?"

Hu Ziyuan nodded. "That’s what Xiao Hei reported, and I confirmed it. He returned from the Capital City to work as a village doctor here. It’s common knowledge, not hard to find out."

Lu You murmured, "When he gave the Ginseng King to Xiao Hei, he asked him to pass on a message to me."

Hu Ziyuan was very surprised. "What did he say?"

Gazing out the hotel window, Lu You said softly, "Every medicine has its toxic side."

"What does that mean?" Hu Ziyuan was puzzled. Though his Mandarin was fluent, he had been educated in Mold Country and didn’t understand many of China’s old adages.

Lu You, aware of his adopted son’s background, began to explain. "The young village doctor was telling me that if my illness is severe, the Ginseng King will not only fail to save me but kill me."

After he finished speaking, his expression grew distant as he contemplated the truth of those words.

"What?!" Hu Ziyuan exclaimed, unsure whether to believe the village doctor. He didn’t dare say more, only offering a suggestion, "Uncle Jiu, let’s first determine whether the Ginseng King is genuine before we consider anything else."

Hearing this, Lu You agreed that Hu Ziyuan had a point and set aside Wang Jian’s words for the moment.

A doctor from a small village... How interesting.

When Xiao Hei returned to the hotel room, the first thing Lu You and Hu Ziyuan asked about were the specific details of how Wang Jian had produced the Ginseng King.

Taking the Ginseng King from Xiao Hei, Lu You nodded at Hu Ziyuan, signaling for him to begin his inspection. Although the rich medicinal aroma that wafted from it had him halfway convinced, nothing was ever certain, and it was always best to confirm.

Meanwhile, Xiao Hei described his encounter with Wang Jian.

"It was interesting. I followed the young doctor to his home. I just briefly said I was there to retrieve something, and he immediately realized it was the Ginseng King."

"Then he took out a red sandalwood box. The Ginseng King had been stored inside."

Hearing about the red sandalwood, Lu You knew that Wang Jian was someone who understood medicinal herbs; this village doctor definitely knew his stuff.

Once Hu Ziyuan confirmed the Ginseng King’s authenticity, Lu You continued questioning Xiao Hei. "That village doctor, the Doctor Wang you mentioned, was there anything else special about him?"

Xiao Hei glanced at Lu You, then at Hu Ziyuan, and suddenly hesitated.

Seeing this, Hu Ziyuan frowned and snapped, "Why are you being difficult? Is there something you haven’t told us?"

Xiao Hei was much older than Hu Ziyuan. Leaving aside his experience and standing in the underworld, he was Hu Ziyuan’s elder in age alone. Being scolded in such a manner, Xiao Hei’s face immediately darkened.

The two stared each other down, a clear challenge passing between them.

Lu You coughed twice, breaking the tense atmosphere. Acting as if he had seen nothing, he continued, "Xiao Hei, go on. Don’t mind Ziyuan. He isn’t one of us and doesn’t know the rules. Don’t hold it against him."

Hearing Lu You apologize on Hu Ziyuan’s behalf, Xiao Hei was momentarily stunned. He looked at Lu You as if seeing him for the first time, then his gaze flickered between the two before he finally recounted how he had been mistaken for a patient.

As Xiao Hei spoke, he took out the few Medicine Pills Wang Jian had given him.

"These are the pills Doctor Wang prescribed after treating my condition. He said they were refined from traditional Chinese medicine."

"Oh?" Noticing the rich medicinal fragrance emanating from the black pills, Lu You found it marvelous. This young man actually knows the art of alchemy.

"Alchemy?" Hu Ziyuan’s expression turned peculiar. That kid is probably just a swindler.
