Village Doctor's Women-Chapter 271 - 265 National Doctor
The tone of their conversation was more like that of old friends or brothers who had been through thick and thin together. The fact that the soldiers called Xu Changqing ’Chief’ also showed that he held a position of high status.
"There’s nothing to be surprised about," Xu Changqing explained. "Your Uncle Chen and I were in the same squad on the battlefield. Although the units were later reorganized and I left the army, we’ve always kept in touch."
"You know my situation," Xu Changqing said, sipping his tea unhurriedly. "I stopped being a Taoist back then, and this was part of the reason. Later, I started practicing medicine and reconnected with your Uncle Chen. I got to know many people while traveling around and treating the sick.
"One thing led to another, and I returned to the military, assigned to a special medical unit. We’re not attached to any single military region; we only serve the top leadership. There are quite a few of us, and I’m not needed for minor ailments, so I have a lot of free time. Now that I’m getting old, it’s time I recommended a successor..."
Wang Jian sensed Xu Changqing hadn’t told the whole story. The attitude of the soldiers he’d seen toward Xu Changqing was far too respectful for a simple military doctor. However, he didn’t ask, as it wasn’t really his business.
This proposal caught Wang Jian completely off guard. After a moment, he could only ask, "If I go, can I still work as the village doctor?"
This question made the two old men cough and sputter. Pointing at Wang Jian, they laughed as they scolded him, "You silly boy, how can you not know what’s good for you? After getting an offer like this, you’re still worried about being a village doctor? What’s going on in that head of yours?"
Wang Jian chuckled. "Isn’t that why I came back from the Capital City? To be the village doctor? I can’t just abandon that. People from several villages around us come to me for treatment. If I leave, who will they turn to?"
Uncle Chen and Xu Changqing exchanged a look, speechless. Wang Jian had a point. Just because this involved the national leadership, they couldn’t ignore the well-being of the villagers.
They glanced at Wang Jian again, finding his earnest smile almost radiant. It’s a good thing for a young man to have such a heart.
After pondering for a moment, Uncle Chen said, "Don’t be so quick to refuse. I may have agreed, but if you want to join the National Medical Team, you’ll still have to earn the respect of the people already there. Your master fought his way in back in the day. Anyone who wasn’t convinced, he’d go right to their turf and put on a show with his skills. By the time he was done, everyone was won over, and he ended up becoming the person in charge."
Suddenly having his old stories exposed, Xu Changqing cleared his throat. "How can you call that ’fighting’? I was persuading people with virtue."
Good heavens, so that’s why Master Xu traveled around practicing medicine in his early years.
"It’s good that you have this sense of duty," Xu Changqing said. "But becoming a National Doctor won’t really interfere. After all, the leadership team isn’t sick every day. And even if one of us is, you might not be the one called, since there are so many of us doctors, right?"
That sounded reasonable, so Wang Jian agreed.
With the main business settled, Xu Changqing began to ask about the specific details of last night, which showed just how extraordinary his relationship with Old Chen was.
Worried about the changes from the previous night, Xu Changqing asked, "Anything unusual today?"
Wang Jian shook his head. "Everything’s normal. In fact, it’s much better than before. I feel like I can see things with perfect clarity, things that used to be confusing."
Xu Changqing nodded. That must be why he was able to spot my health issue at a glance earlier. "And your spiritual energy?"
"Very good," Wang Jian replied promptly, as this was something he had carefully observed. "After a night’s sleep, I feel whole again. Everything that was consumed last night has been fully replenished."
Hearing this, Xu Changqing visibly relaxed, his smile broadening. "I truly never expected that this dream of mine might actually be realized through you."
This wasn’t the first time Xu Changqing had said something like this.
Since Old Chen was present this time, he looked over in shock. He clearly understood what dream Xu Changqing was referring to. "Are you serious?" he asked.
Old Chen was far more shocked now than when Xu Changqing had suggested Wang Jian take over his post, because he knew Xu was talking about Taoist cultivation. The weight of that path was far heavier than that of practicing medicine.
When Xu Changqing simply nodded in response, Old Chen immediately turned to stare at Wang Jian, his tea completely forgotten.
They then heard Xu Changqing say, "Try to use the technique from last night. See if you can replicate it."
Wang Jian didn’t hesitate. He was curious himself, so he closed his eyes in front of the two elders. This was the very reason he had rushed over here immediately after leaving Cai Qiong’s place. With Xu Changqing present, he felt secure, knowing that even if something went wrong, he had a safety net.
After all, this is a Yangshen leaving the body...
Wang Jian focused, recalling the changes from the previous night. The Yin Yang qi inside him surged, its activity instantly jumping from 100% to 200%. It was then that he felt a peculiar sensation of splitting from within. The sensation was similar to sleep paralysis, but since he was wide awake, it was more like perceiving a second body inside his own, one that was being enveloped.
It was an incredibly wondrous feeling—far more tangible than the experience last night. And unlike the spontaneous event of the previous night, he was now fully in control.
Wang Jian knew the splitting sensation came from his Yangshen. He focused on drawing it out from his physical form. The sense of detachment grew stronger and stronger until he felt his entire being become light and ethereal. The process was complete.
The two men sitting opposite him could only stare, wide-eyed, at the scene unfolding before them.
As Xu Changqing and Old Chen watched, a white, misty substance seeped from Wang Jian’s body. The mist slowly enveloped him, then gradually peeled away to coalesce into a second, translucent version of Wang Jian that hovered in the air.
The two men watched as the transparent Wang Jian opened his eyes.
The courtyard was deathly quiet. The security personnel outside, hearing nothing amiss, did not enter, completely unaware of the miraculous scene unfolding within.
Xu Changqing was taking it slightly better; he had been mentally prepared since last night. Now, after the initial shock, his expression was a mixture of envy and gratification. Old Chen, on the other hand, was truly struggling to remain calm, staring as if he’d seen a ghost.
But ghosts and spirits, even if you believed in them, were creatures of darkness that couldn’t bear the sun. Yet this translucent Wang Jian before them had a lively, joyful expression, obviously unharmed by the bright daylight.
Seeing Wang Jian taking in the new sensations, Xu Changqing prompted, "How do you feel?"
Wang Jian lifted his hands, watching his now-transparent fingers. He even glanced back at his own physical body, still sitting in the chair, before saying with a voice full of awe, "So light. It’s an unprecedented feeling of ease. I have the illusion that if I could stay like this forever, I could live on indefinitely."
Live on indefinitely... Isn’t that immortality?
Hearing this, Old Chen’s eyebrow twitched. He had a sudden, intense craving for a cigarette, but he’d quit long ago and had none to find.
"It seems the classics were right all along," Xu Changqing murmured, looking dazed. "The path of the Yangshen truly is a path to long life."
Hearing the word "immortality," Wang Jian gave a wry smile. His translucent form floated back and merged with his physical body. As he came back to himself, the strange phenomena ceased. "That’s just a nice thought," he said. "Right now, I’d be lucky to maintain that state for more than ten minutes."
