Village Doctor's Women-Chapter 278 - 272 Outrageously Persuaded to Quit
Arriving at the entrance of the train station, Wang Jian’s heart was filled with indescribable emotions.
I’ve been away for over half a year. After all these twists and turns, I’m unexpectedly heading back to Capital City.
That land, both familiar and strange, was filled with his memories and unresolved feelings. Only now, having gotten back on track, could he return with a relaxed mindset. This was very different from his first time in Capital City. Back then, he had left to build a career and achieve something. Now, he wanted nothing. Without desire, one is invincible; he was simply going to practice medicine in a different place. 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂
However, just as Wang Jian was lost in his reflections, an unexpected phone call came from Capital City.
"Hello, may I speak with Mr. Wang?"
The only people who addressed him like that were the coordinating staff from the National Medical Group in Capital City. Wang Jian instantly recognized the voice; it was the same person he had dealt with before. A call at this particular time definitely meant something unexpected had happened.
Sure enough, after confirming his identity, the person on the other end immediately adopted an apologetic tone. "I’m sorry, Mr. Wang. I just received a notification from my superiors informing me that your slot has been canceled."
"What do you mean?" Wang Jian was stunned. He thought there might have been a mix-up with the reporting time, but the news was that he didn’t need to go at all. A surge of anger rose in his heart. He felt like he was being played for a fool.
However, on second thought, he swallowed the aggressive words he was about to say. The people who had recommended him for this team were two respected elders, one of whom was his master. Xu Changqing had made it clear: Wang Jian was to take on the heavy responsibility of leading China’s next generation in the tradition of National Medicine. Otherwise, he shouldn’t dare claim to be Xu Changqing’s disciple.
Awaiting him were the top heirs to China’s medical arts, the best of the middle-aged generation, including practitioners of both Western and National Medicine.
It was only due to the pressure from these two elders that Wang Jian had agreed to go to Capital City. He hadn’t planned on holding anything back and intended to go all in. These two would never undermine him and had high expectations for him. This incident was definitely not their doing.
With this in mind, it was clear someone had been pulling strings behind the scenes.
Wang Jian’s tone changed. "Which superior notified you?"
His voice was cold and flat, catching the operator off guard.
"I’m sorry, Mr. Wang," the operator said. He had prepared all sorts of persuasive and apologetic scripts, but none of them seemed to apply now. "It was an oversight on my part."
The operator’s tone also held a hint of aggrieved frustration.
Wang Jian could tell, of course. He had no intention of blaming the man; he just wanted to know one thing. "You don’t need to apologize to me. It’s not your fault. Just tell me where the notification came from."
"Mr. Wang..." The operator fell silent, clearly hesitant to expose a superior.
Realizing this, Wang Jian changed his approach. "Perhaps you could just send me the notification to review. Since my slot is being canceled at the last minute, there must be a written notice, right?"
The operator sighed in relief. "Thank you, Mr. Wang. I’ll send it to your phone right away."
The two then ended the call.
Wang Jian no longer felt like catching the train. He found a spot on the edge of a flowerbed outside the station entrance, sat down, and opened the document that had been sent to his phone. The irony was that after Xu Changqing and the elder had recommended him, he had received a formal letter of appointment. This National Medical Group was like some kind of ultimate academy. If his entry required an appointment letter, then the cancellation of his slot must require a letter of termination.
As expected, the file was a PDF of a termination notice.
It was a formal, by-the-book document. The reason given was that the quota had been filled, so they were forced to dismiss the last participant to join based on their sign-up time. There was no mention of any fault on Wang Jian’s part.
It had to be said, the person causing this trouble was very clever.
If they had just attacked me directly, claiming I had personal issues or wasn’t worthy...
Wang Jian smiled, closed the file on his phone, and walked decisively out of the station. Since someone didn’t want him to take part in Capital City, he would simply comply with their wish. He only hoped that person wouldn’t regret it later and come begging him for help.
Wang Jian hadn’t wanted to go to such a place to begin with, and now he had a legitimate reason not to. He just disliked dealing with the gray areas of social politics. His pace even quickened as he left, revealing a surprising sense of pleasure in his heart.
He didn’t take the dismissal to heart at all, though he was somewhat irked by the person behind it. If he ever got the chance, he would definitely make the saboteur suffer a bit. Otherwise, the unsettled feeling in his heart wouldn’t go away.
Actually, even before setting out, Wang Jian had anticipated that some people would look down on him or perhaps want to challenge him. At his age, he was the youngest among this new generation of successors. The next youngest was a full ten years older than him. It was impossible to aim for the top position at such an age without encountering some obstacles.
During this period, Wang Jian’s strength had surged. Since the manifestation of his Yangshen at the hospital, he hadn’t been able to re-enter that state, but his cultivation of qi had grown exponentially. His control over it had already increased more than tenfold. At night, while sleeping, he could even feel his Yangshen threatening to leave his body again.
The feeling was mysterious yet tangibly real.
After asking his master, he had also consulted some ancient texts. He found no direct records, but all related accounts conveyed a single message: those who attain mastery know it innately.
Now that Wang Jian’s strength had reached such a profound level, not only could Xu Changqing no longer teach him anything, but even the ancient texts were of no help. The path he was walking was unprecedented; he had to rely entirely on himself.
Compared to this, these roadblocks on the path of National Medicine seemed trivial.
He didn’t inform anyone about his dismissal. He simply headed home, the way and the area both familiar.
When he slipped back home, the two women who had seen him off had only just arrived themselves. He happened to overhear his sister-in-law, Xu Qian, talking with Cai Qiong.
He coughed lightly, interrupting their conversation. When they turned to look at him, their eyes filled with surprise. The two of them were already in the yard, and upon seeing Wang Jian, they both rushed toward him.
Uncharacteristically, both women threw themselves into his arms at the same time.
Wang Jian held his hands out, unsure whether to hug them or hold them. Seeing that they were both silent, he finally just patted them on the back.
"Alright, alright. I’m not going to Capital City this time. Don’t worry, I won’t be leaving suddenly again."
Hearing his words, Xu Qian and Cai Qiong finally relaxed and looked up. It was only then that they realized they were both hugging the same man. Although they were all tacitly aware of the situation between them, this was the first time it had been so openly displayed.
A blush crept onto both of their faces. It wasn’t until Wang Jian picked up his luggage and started walking toward the house that the two of them, by unspoken agreement, decided not to dwell on their impulsive act.
