Chapter 40: Eternal Dream

Draven wondered if he should just kill Annabelle there and then. Get it over and done with.

But three things were stopping him.

Firstly, he wanted to speak to her. Pick her mind to find out what her intentions were in this world.

Second, he wished to know more about this abomination that the world had come to call science. To turn a powerful human boy into a fairy with exponential potential was unheard of and brought many questions to the surface about the nature of the world.

Lastly, Annabelle was beautiful and would make a good servant once defeated.

"Annabelle." He said, placing cheerfulness in his voice. "It’s brave of you to come here after lying to me about the werewolf’s intentions."

The Mother’s face didn’t change after hearing the accusations, as her eyes scanned the room. Draven sensed her heartbeat, but it remained at a steady rate.

She felt no fear.

Why?

"Ah, yes. I’m sorry I forgot to tell you that I encouraged the Werewolves to contact Galvacaniva, but I can assure you there was no malicious intent behind it. I simply wanted things to be more interesting."

Under different circumstances, Draven could understand taking actions purely for the sake of making things more interesting, but contacting the gods was a line you didn’t cross.

"Anyways." Annabelle continued, switching to a different topic as she pointed at the fairy floating in the sky. "That boy there, I’m going to need to take him back."

Whilst Draven had no reaction, Yalenia’s face instantly switched to one of rage, which was rare as she was usually full of blissful joy.

"No!" She snarled, taking an aggressive step forward. "You’ll have to kill me first!"

Annabelle’s lips made a circle shape, and her eyebrows raised in surprise.

Then, she looked at Vampire Lord.

"What do you say, Draven? Can I kill her?"

Despite the severity of the situation, Draven could not help but be amused. Annabelle reminded him of his old self. How he used to toy with his enemies and make fun out of the most serious circumstances.

However, his mind raced to the night he had spent with Yalenia. He had enjoyed her body thoroughly, and based on her power readings, she would lose to Annabelle’s monocled partner.

And he wasn’t prepared to lose her yet.

But before he could answer, Maya stepped forward, brandishing her great hammer in both hands.

The weapon was gruesomely large. Someone of her small size should not have been able to wield such a weapon, yet she held it as though it were weightless.

She had a serious look in her green eyes, as her green hair flowed loosely down to her back.

"My Lord. Please, let me handle this." She said to Draven with intense eyes.

Oh? Maya Heart wishes for a fight?

He scratched at his chin, contemplating the idea. Maya was the sixth-ranked knight and could perhaps put up a fight with the monocled man.

But from what he could sense, the man was stronger.

Unless Maya had a strategic advantage, it was likely she would lose.

Everyone in the room watched him, wondering if he would give the go-ahead for the duel.

Finally, he came to a decision.

Let’s have some fun then.

"Sure, why not? However, Maya, I must warn you, that man is strong."

Annabelle’s partner seemed to have no reaction to the compliment, simply drawing his sword from his back. Whilst Maya’s reaction remained unchanged as well.

"It’s fine, My Lord." She said confidently. "Something about his demeanour irks me."

Well then, she seems to have faith. As her Lord, it’s only right that I allow her to test herself.

If she fails, I’ll just step in and kill the man.

Annabelle clapped her hands as though she were about to watch a play. She seemed to have absolute confidence in her assistant.

I wish Dracula were here. I would have rather seen him fight the man.

Not wishing to waste any more time, Maya stepped forward, preparing to battle against the man.

"What’s your name?" She asked him before they started.

The monocled man’s face remained solemn, revealing no emotion. No one in the room besides him and The Mother could guess how he might have been feeling about the battle.

"Mortalius." He said, bluntly, before readying his weapon.

The two started at each other for a few moments, both waiting for the other to make the move.

"..."

Woosh.

The pair vanished. Or at least they seemed to.

Draven of course, was able to track their movements.

The two clashed at the centre of the room, Warhammer meeting sword. The force was incredible, sending a gust of wind blowing towards everyone in the room, almost knocking them off balance.

Draven noticed that Annabelle remained unaffected, which he found interesting.

There’s some sort of secret to that woman. Only us two were the ones unaffected.

Maya seemed to have gotten the better of the exchange, as Mortalius was sent sliding backwards, forcing him into going on the offensive.

Maya wasted no time in accessing her blood source and sending a large ball of it flying towards him as though it were a large stone.

Draven watched closely.

Good, now perhaps I can witness the human’s magic. I can sense a magical presence, but I’m yet to see what they can do.

However, rather than using magic of his own to defend against the attack, the man simply sliced at the ball of blood with his sword, hard enough to disrupt the spell and render it useless.

Maya seemed startled, but it was not enough to stop her.

She dashed forward again, hammer held and ready to deliver a vicious strike on her foe.

But this time, something was different about Mortalius as he dashed to meet the strike.

His sword began to glow.

Its black and red metal began to radiate with a power level so strong and foreign that it even put Draven on edge.

As it did, something became obvious.

If the two clashed, Maya would lose.

Draven bit into his finger, allowing a drop of Malevolent blood to fall, prepared to interrupt the battle.

But that’s when it happened.

A strange new power came from the other side of the room, towards Annabelle’s direction.

It was the first time he had been able to sense magic from the woman, but it was still unnaturally weak.

However, as he laid eyes on her, he noticed a golden glow in her irises.

There was a confident smirk on her face, as her lips moved.

Draven couldn’t hear her, but he could read the words on her lips.

"Eternal Dream."

Everything happened in a second.

Draven found himself in a different realm.

He no longer stood in the laboratory of Yalenia, watching the battle against Maya and Mortalius.

Instead, he stood inside a world that he could only describe as a dream.

He stood on a floor made from golden clouds with blue skies above him. Nothing felt real, not even his physical body.

Then, within this world, he noticed someone standing in front of him.

Vespera. The First-Knight.

Older sister of Annabelle.

She wore no clothes, for the first time revealing to Draven her entire face, which was gorgeous. Her body was slender, yet surprisingly curvy.

What in Velhalla is this?

As she spotted him, she seemed just as shocked as he was. She tried crossing her arms to cover her breasts and lower region, but it hardly worked. Her cheeks blushed to a deep crimson.

"D-Draven." She exclaimed. "What’s going on?"

Her voice sounded ethereal, as though it echoed a thousand times throughout this strange, world.

But before the Vampire Lord was able to answer, the world began to fade around him, as he returned to his physical body standing in the laboratory.

If not for the sounds of screams bringing him to his senses, Draven would have been left in a daze after experiencing such a crazy power.

It was unlike anything he had ever witnessed in his life.

But more importantly, ahead of him, Maya Heart, the sixth-ranked Nocturnal Knight, was grasping at a wound that squirted blood like a fountain.

Her arm had been cut off cleanly.

Mortalius stood there, blade bloodied and face unbothered, as though he had just killed an animal to eat.

Annabelle let out a vicious laugh that seemed to fill all vampires in the room with dread.

"Finish her!" She shouted at her monocled assistant, and the man wasted no time.

Even Draven wasn’t fast enough to interfere, as he tried to send the Malevolent blood flying towards Mortalius. But it was to no use.

The man spun and chopped Maya’s head from her shoulders, as it hit the ground with a thump and left a trail of blood in its wake.

Everything went silent for a few moments, as the vampires stood there, jaw agape at the slaughter.

It was Serena who acted first, drawing for her scythe and charging towards Mortalius.

But Draven’s voice stopped her.

"Don’t." He demanded.

The woman stopped and stared at him with distraught eyes.

She did not know then, but he stopped her because there was something he was certain of. The Nocturnal Knights were too weak.

The power that Draven had felt coming from that sword was stronger than any magic he had witnessed a vampire using during his time awake.

They were many times stronger than the Werewolves. Whatever this science was had aided them incredibly.

Not only that, but Annabelle...

She had somehow been able to trap Draven in some sort of dream. A place even he was unable to comprehend.

And Vespera was there...

He needed to question the woman, and gather answers.

Until then, he would leave the humans. It was obvious they were an enemy he had to take seriously.

The Vampire Lord was the strongest in the world, but even he had to be cautious at times, especially when the lives of the Noctaris were at stake.

"Give them the fairy." He declared, giving everybody a shock. "We’re leaving."
