Wealthy Beauty in the 60s-Chapter 229 - 228: Learning to Make Shoe Soles
Chapter 229: Chapter 228: Learning to Make Shoe Soles
If Jiaxing had done that, Zheng Xianghong would have certainly scolded him, but she couldn’t say much to Sun Yuhua.
Xia Xiao then handed over Jiaxing’s egg to Sun Yuhua, who took it and smiled at Xia Xiao, "Xia Xiao, you chat with mom, I need to go back and lie down because I feel heavy."
"Okay, Yuhua, take good care of yourself," Xia Xiao didn’t say much more.
"Jiaxing wrote a letter to you, but you had just returned to the city that day, so I couldn’t give it to you. I kept it for you," Zheng Xianghong said as she made Xia Xiao sit down and went into the room to get the letter.
Xia Xiao took the letter but didn’t open it. Instead, she held the yarn and asked Zheng Xianghong, "Auntie, can you knit sweaters?"
"Yes, I learned a bit from someone in the army," replied Zheng Xianghong.
"Then teach me, Auntie. When I have time, I’ll knit a few stitches. When it gets cold, I’ll send it to Brother Gao." Xia Xiao didn’t just want to knit for Jiaxing; she intended to knit one for every family member.
Hearing Xia Xiao’s words, Zheng Xianghong was delighted, "Sure, come over when you have time, and I will teach you."
"I’ll just leave these yarns here then, so it won’t be troublesome to carry them back and forth," Xia Xiao said, and Zheng Xianghong readily agreed.
Suddenly, Xia Xiao noticed Zheng Xianghong placing the yarn aside, and something that looked like a shoe sole next to it, and asked, "Auntie, what are you making?"
"Oh, I’m stitching shoe soles for your team leader as well as for Jiazhi and Jiaxing. Men go through shoes quickly," Zheng Xianghong said as she took the shoe soles.
Xia Xiao replied, "I already bought two pairs of Liberation shoes and socks for Brother Gao and sent them to him."
"Oh dear, that must have been expensive, Xia Xiao. You shouldn’t spend so much in the future. Auntie can make them, and it doesn’t cost much. I also send shoes and socks to Jiaxing, all made by myself," said Zheng Xianghong.
Xia Xiao didn’t mention to Zheng Xianghong how quickly Jiaxing’s shoes and socks wore out in the army. She looked at the shoes made by Zheng Xianghong and suddenly became interested, "Teach me also, Auntie."
Zheng Xianghong was more than happy to teach, and immediately Xia Xiao spent an hour or two learning how to stitch shoe soles from Zheng Xianghong before leaving the Gao family’s home.
As soon as Xia Xiao left, Sun Yuhua came out and asked Zheng Xianghong, "Mom, has Xia Xiao left?"
"Yes, she left," nodded Zheng Xianghong.
Sun Yuhua glanced at the egg on the table and asked, "Mom, aren’t you eating this egg?"
How could Zheng Xianghong not understand her look? She replied to Sun Yuhua, "I’m not eating. You take one for yourself, and leave one for your dad."
Sun Yuhua immediately nodded, took an egg, and went into the room.
Zheng Xianghong watched Sun Yuhua’s retreating figure and shook her head. Thankfully, Xia Xiao wasn’t like that. It wasn’t that Zheng preferred Xia Xiao, but ever since Sun Yuhua had married into the family, she had been like this.
Now pregnant, she was even less involved, leaving all the house chores to Zheng Xianghong, who, caring deeply for the child in Yuhua’s womb, took over everything and did not let Sun Yuhua lift a finger.
Sun Yuhua further disengaged, only waiting to eat and staying in her room without coming out or chatting with Zheng Xianghong. On the second day of the Lunar New Year, when Zheng Xianghong’s daughters visited, Yuhua neither chatted nor helped with vegetables, maintaining her aloof demeanor.
Although Zheng Xianghong’s daughters found their sister-in-law difficult to get along with, they didn’t complain or express dissatisfaction, but rather confided privately with Zheng Xianghong.
However, Zheng Xianghong and Gao Guoqiang were not the kind to dwell on these issues, and with the Gao Family having fewer people and a simpler household, everyone lived in peace, especially with the old house’s people absent.
When Guoqiang and Jiazhi returned, Yuhua also came out of the room. Seeing an egg on the table, Guoqiang asked, "Why is there an egg?"
Xianghong replied, "Xia Xiao came back from the city and brought some eggs. I saved one for you."
Yuhua said, "Dad, the eggs Xia Xiao brought are really delicious. Please eat it." Yuhua always respected Guoqiang, and she treated him differently compared to how she treated Xianghong.
Guoqiang shook his head, "You eat it."
Hesitating for a moment, Yuhua still said, "Thank you, Dad."
Seeing this, Jiazhi said, "Yuhua, you should leave it for Dad. After all, Xia Xiao brought it for him to eat."
Yuhua looked at Guoqiang. He shook his head again, "I don’t need it, let Yuhua nourish herself."
After Guoqiang said this, Yuhua happily took the egg.
Jiazhi frowned even more, gave Yuhua a meaningful glance, and the two went back to their room.
Jiazhi said, "Yuhua, it’s not like we have nothing to eat at home. The eggs from the chickens Mom raises, haven’t you eaten them all? Now that Xia Xiao has brought eggs, I’m sure you’d eat ours too. How could you still take Dad’s?"
Yuhua nonchalantly replied, "It’s just an egg, you’re frowning so much. Xia Xiao’s eggs are tasty."
"What do you think isn’t tasty? All the delicious food at home ends up in your mouth," Jiazhi retorted.
Yuhua gently patted her stomach, "Well, yes. It’s not just me eating; it’s for two people I’m nourishing. I’m thinking of your son. Don’t you care about him?"
Jiazhi sighed, "You can’t do this next time."
"Got it. But if you keep saying this, I will really lose my temper," Yuhua glared and then headed back to lie on the bed.
Jiazhi said, "You can’t just stay in the house all the time. You need to go out and walk. Mom also said it’s better for giving birth if you move around more."
"I don’t want to. I’m just tired and want to sleep," Yuhua was reluctant to go out because that might mean having to work, and with the tension outside, she had some reservations.
But with Xia Xiaohui’s return, Yuhua knew everything was alright at home, and she felt somewhat reassured. Still, the cold treatment from her family had hurt her.
Jiazhi felt helpless with Yuhua, and watching her sleep, he went outside.
Xianghong, seeing Jiazhi come out, said, "You should take Yuhua out for a walk. Lying down all day, that’s not good at all."
Xianghong, having been through it herself, knew how hard childbirth could be. Severe cases were like narrowly escaping death. She wanted to use Yang Hua’s example but it was inauspicious to mention, though she still hoped Yuhua would get out and move.
Jiazhi shook his head helplessly, Xianghong sighed, and Guoqiang also remained silent.
"What is this?" Jiazhi asked.
Only then did a smile return to Xianghong’s face, "It’s from Xia Xiao. She wants me to teach her knitting. She plans to make a sweater for Jiaxing."
"Very good, very good," Guoqiang said repeatedly.
Everyone in the Gao family knew Jiaxing liked Xia Xiao. Seeing how considerate Xia Xiao was toward Jiaxing, Guoqiang, Xianghong, and Jiazhi were all very happy.
