Chapter 118: Chapter 118: Avenging You

Shane Shaw rubbed his nose and said guiltily, "Boss, Ian Sterling is in real trouble. After all, you were poisoned by the bird’s nest soup he gave you..."

Vivian Quinn froze. ’Is Jett Sterling giving Ian Sterling a hard time for my sake?’

’Why?’

"So is Jett Sterling doing this for me?"

Shane Shaw instantly realized he’d misspoken but didn’t know how to fix it. He quickly added, "Anyway, I heard Ian Sterling has been detained. I don’t know anything else!"

Vivian Quinn reached for her phone on the nightstand. "No, I have to call Jett Sterling and get this straight!"

"Boss, what are you going to ask him?"

"There’s no way Ian Sterling would poison me. I can’t let anything happen to him."

"But things are so sensitive between you and Jett Sterling right now. Is it really a good idea to call him?"

Vivian Quinn hesitated for a moment but insisted, "I have other things I need to clear up with him."

Shane Shaw didn’t try to stop her. "Okay, then."

Vivian Quinn made the call, and it was answered almost immediately. A man’s deep, cold voice came through the line, "What now?"

Vivian Quinn couldn’t help but flinch, but she asked anyway, "Are you punishing Ian Sterling? For me? Jett Sterling, what exactly are you trying to do?"

"What could I possibly be trying to do?" the man chuckled faintly. "You don’t actually think I’m avenging you, do you? Vivian Quinn, your imagination is running a little wild."

"The reason I’m dealing with Ian Sterling is that the bird’s nest soup was originally intended for my mother. Understand?"

Vivian Quinn closed her eyes in despair. ’How could I be so stupid? Why, even at a time like this, would I still delude myself into hoping Jett Sterling cared about me!’

’I’m even starting to despise myself!’

Vivian Quinn took a deep breath. When she opened her eyes again, her gaze was calm. "I misspoke just now. Don’t worry about it. I just want to tell you that this has nothing to do with Ian Sterling. He might be flamboyant, but he’s not the kind of person who would hurt someone."

"This is a family matter. I don’t need you interfering. If there’s nothing else, we’re done here."

After saying his piece, Jett Sterling hung up.

Vivian Quinn’s chest felt as if it were being crushed by a boulder, making it hard to breathe.

"Boss, just let it go," Shane Shaw said, trying to comfort her. "This really is a Sterling Family matter. You should stay out of it."

"I can’t figure Jett Sterling out, but I know Ian Sterling wouldn’t hurt anyone. If Jett wrongly accuses him and something happens, I’ll never be able to forgive myself." The more Vivian Quinn thought about it, the more something felt off. "Shane Shaw, go find Easton Rivers and find out exactly where Ian Sterling is now. Hurry."

Shane Shaw nodded. "Alright. Don’t worry, Boss. I’ll go ask around right now."

...

「Meanwhile, at Sycamore Bay.」

Jett Sterling stared at the phone, a flash of suppressed pain in his deep, dark eyes.

The man closed his eyes for a moment, then maneuvered his wheelchair downstairs. Arriving in the living room, he looked at Ian Sterling kneeling on the floor. "Continue."

"Uncle, continue what?" Ian Sterling felt incredibly wronged. "I really didn’t know the bird’s nest soup was poisoned! Why else would I have given it to Vivian Quinn?"

"How are you going to prove that?"

"How am I supposed to prove it?" Ian Sterling was ready to question his entire existence. "I’ve been kneeling here for hours! Uncle, I’m really being framed. If you kill me, it’ll be wrongful death. I’ll be more wronged than Doris!"

"A grown man who only knows how to cry foul when faced with trouble, who can’t even produce the most basic evidence to prove his innocence... How are you even a member of the Sterling Family?"

Ian Sterling: "..."

"Uncle, you’re so capable. Of course you can find the truth and clear my name. I shouldn’t have to prove it myself."

Easton Rivers, standing off to the side, gave a dry cough and offered a kind reminder. "Master Ian, the reason you are only kneeling here is that there’s no proof you’re the culprit. Your mother, however, is a different story."

Ian Sterling’s face went white. "What do you mean? What have you done to my mom?!"

"Master Ian, you said it yourself. Your mother prepared that bird’s nest soup for the Madam. You just happened to take it and give it to the young Madam by mistake. Your mother must take responsibility for this."

Ian Sterling was in a full-blown panic. "Uncle, you know better than anyone what my mother is like! She’s always been timid and keeps to herself. She would never hurt anyone, let alone poison them! There’s something fishy going on here!"

"And so I’m giving you a chance to explain yourself, yet you push the investigation onto me." Jett Sterling sneered. "My principle is this: it is better to kill an innocent person than to let a guilty one escape. The bird’s nest soup came from your household. Your entire family will die."

"Uncle, have mercy!" Ian Sterling was on the verge of tears. "This has absolutely nothing to do with my mother! I’ll investigate. I’ll go right now!"

"I’ll give you three days. If you don’t have an explanation for me in three days, you will face the consequences."

"Isn’t three days a little short?" Ian Sterling thought for a moment. "One week. I’ll definitely give you an answer within one week!"

Jett Sterling stared at him, his face devoid of expression. "Two days."

Ian Sterling: "..."

"Five days! Just five days!"

Jett Sterling: "One day."

Ian Sterling, almost in tears, cried, "I’ll go investigate right now!"

He scrambled up from the floor and left, his head hanging low.

Easton Rivers asked curiously, "Master Sterling, you’ve already discovered the truth and know this had nothing to do with Master Ian or his mother. Why are you still detaining his mother and forcing him to investigate?"

Jett Sterling said faintly, "Someone has to bear the weight of the Sterling Family."

Easton Rivers frowned. "Are you planning to hand the family’s burdens over to Master Ian? But your condition isn’t untreatable!"

"I know." A hint of anticipation touched Jett Sterling’s lips. "If I die, the Sterling Family will be handed over to Ian Sterling. If I live, I will still give up the power I hold and leave this place with Vivian to live a simple, quiet life."

Easton Rivers nodded. "The young Madam’s poisoning was indeed unexpected. Coupled with Mason Landon’s premeditation, it put us on the defensive. But I believe you and she will overcome this."

...

Vivian Quinn waited and waited, but when no news came, she picked up her phone and called Ian Sterling. "Are you okay?"

"I’m fine for now, but I won’t be for long! Vivian Quinn, after I’m gone, remember to send a few sports cars my way in the afterlife!"

Vivian Quinn: "..."

"Is Jett Sterling coming after you?"

"Yeah. He suspects my mom and I tried to harm his mother. He only gave me one day to find the truth."

"Ian Sterling, I don’t know your mother, but I know you’re definitely not that kind of person."

Ian Sterling was surprisingly touched. "You’ve got good judgment!"

"Don’t panic. The more you rush, the more muddled your thoughts will become. You need to calm down to find a direction for your investigation. Here’s what I’m thinking..."

Vivian Quinn laid out her thoughts, and it was a revelation for Ian Sterling. "Vivian Quinn, your thinking is so clear, and you see everything so perceptively! I’ll do exactly as you say!"

Vivian Quinn smiled. "It’s easy for a bystander to see things clearly. It’s nothing, really."

"No, no, no! Aside from being a little blinded by love when it comes to my uncle, you’re absolutely brilliant and clever about everything else!"

The smile on Vivian Quinn’s face instantly froze.
