Chapter 213: Chapter 213: Getting Antsy

"What did you say?" Vivian Quinn asked, surprised. "The killer showed up?"

"The killer tried to frame you, but you weren’t taken away by the police. She’s bound to investigate what went wrong."

Vivian Quinn nodded. "Right."

"I’ve been monitoring the police department’s internal network. I get an alert whenever someone hacks into it."

"So the computer chimed just now because someone hacked in? Did you trace their location?"

"They noticed and disconnected in time, so I couldn’t track them." Jett Sterling’s gaze darkened. "But at least it proves she’s getting antsy."

"Jett, actually, when I found out the killer might be a woman, I was quite relieved. At least it proved it wasn’t my master." Vivian Quinn looked at him. "But what I didn’t tell you is that after I learned how I was drugged, I became certain the drug must be related to my master!"

"Why do you say that?"

"Because my master once gave me orange juice to drink, and even the flowers were the same—tulips. It’s too much of a coincidence. I even have a feeling this is a signal from my master. If the killer really is a woman, then she must have a connection to him!"

"Vivian, this is no small matter." Jett Sterling’s expression was grave. "The Phantom Healer has been missing for years. If he really has reappeared and is connected to Chairman Wentworth’s killer, then this is serious."

"Think about it. A shadowy force pulling the strings, daring enough to offend both the Wentworth and Sterling families. With help from The Phantom Healer, they’re clearly a major power."

"I also really hope it has nothing to do with my master. Besides, if he knew this was a setup targeting me, he would never have gotten involved. But it’s just too much of a coincidence, and my intuition is giving me a very bad feeling."

"Vivian, don’t think about it anymore." Jett Sterling gently stroked her hair. "Any speculation is useless right now. We can only wait for the killer to surface. But since they’re targeting you, I will absolutely not let them get away with it."

"Since it might be related to my master, I have to find out the truth as soon as possible."

"Okay."

...

「The funeral was scheduled for three days later.」

Vivian Quinn had no standing to attend, and Jett Sterling didn’t go in person either, so he arranged for Ian Sterling to go in his stead. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦

Ian Sterling was not happy about it. "Shirley Wentworth was so rude to Vivian Quinn. Why should I go? What a total downer."

Jett Sterling’s face was cold. "Just go. Stop with all the nonsense."

"Fine, fine, I’ll go. But let me get this straight: I’m not going to be nice to any of the Wentworths. If anyone dares run their mouth in front of me, I’ll lose it right then and there."

Jett Sterling instructed, "Easton Rivers, you go with Ian Sterling."

"Yes, Master Sterling."

"Wait a moment." Vivian Quinn came downstairs, holding Elle’s hand. "Ian, take Elle with you. Today is his maternal grandfather’s funeral. He should be there."

"Fine."

Vivian Quinn crouched down. "Elle, remember what Vivian told you. Your grandfather doted on you. Today, you’re going to say goodbye to him. You have to be a good boy and listen to Ian."

"I know."

"Good boy. Go on." Vivian Quinn called Nanny Jenner over. "You go with them and take good care of Elle."

"Yes, Madam."

Watching them leave, Vivian Quinn was rather worried. "Ian won’t cause any trouble, will he?"

"Easton Rivers is with him. It will be fine."

"That’s good."

That evening, Vincent Wentworth called.

"Miss Quinn, my father’s funeral is over. Ian Sterling has taken Elle back home. I heard from Elle that you were the one who had him come. Thank you."

"It’s only right for the younger generation to see off their elders. Mr. Wentworth, I don’t know how to comfort you, but please accept my condolences."

"Thank you. I know. My father has been laid to rest. What I need to do now is find the real killer so he can rest in peace."

"Mm."

"By the way, Jett told me the killer hacked into the police department’s backend system, but he couldn’t trace the location."

"Mm."

Vincent Wentworth sighed. "Jett is a computer expert. If even he couldn’t track them, it means this person has some serious backing... But then again, someone who dared to kill my father couldn’t possibly be a small fry."

"How is your investigation into the Wentworth Family’s rivals going?"

"I’ve never been involved in the management of the Wentworth Group, so I’m not very familiar with that area. The investigation is going a bit slowly."

"Don’t worry, Jett and I are also investigating. The truth will come to light eventually."

"Mm."

They didn’t say much more. Vivian Quinn quickly hung up and went to the kitchen to prepare Elle’s favorite food.

Half an hour later, the moment Ian Sterling got home, he darted into the kitchen. "I’m starving! Is there anything to eat?"

Vivian Quinn glanced at him. "Didn’t you already have lunch?"

"You have no idea. Being in that kind of environment is exhausting. I’ve been hungry for ages."

Vivian Quinn ladled a bowl of seafood congee for him. "This will tide you over. Dinner will be ready soon."

"Mhm." Ian Sterling said as he ate, "Aren’t you curious about what happened at the funeral?"

"Not particularly."

"Come on, it was a huge drama. The collateral branches of the Wentworth Family were all trying to usurp power at the funeral. They really couldn’t wait a single second."

Vivian Quinn was curious. "Chairman Wentworth has children, doesn’t he? How could it be the collateral branches’ turn to seize control?"

"Ah, you wouldn’t know. Vincent is in politics and has never meddled in the Wentworth Group. The second son, Leo Wentworth, is a free spirit like me, with no interest in that stuff. And don’t even get me started on the daughter. So, wouldn’t the family’s collateral branches be scrambling to grab a piece of the pie? They said they were helping, but they were really just trying to steal the cake."

Vivian Quinn’s interest was piqued. "What happened then? The Wentworth Family surely wouldn’t agree to that, right?"

"Of course they didn’t. But the collateral branches kept arguing that Leo Wentworth isn’t up to the task. The atmosphere got really tense. In the end, it was Ruby Wentworth who stepped up and said she would support Leo, which finally calmed things down."

"Ruby Wentworth?"

"Yeah. She has a lot of say in the Wentworth Family and is very capable. Once she spoke, the others couldn’t really object."

Vivian Quinn nodded. "It seems the Wentworth Family’s internal turmoil has subsided for now."

"Yup."

Vivian Quinn collected her thoughts. "Was Elle well-behaved?"

"Of course he was, I was there."

Vivian Quinn pursed her lips. "Don’t take all the credit. Elle is always well-behaved."

"I was the one who took him out today, so of course I get some of the credit."

"Alright, fine. I’ll reward you with a big drumstick later."

"Now that’s more like it."

...

「On Monday, Vivian Quinn went to school with Ian as usual.」

The moment she entered the school gates, she felt passing students looking at her strangely.

"Uh, Vivian, what did you do now? Why are these people looking at you like they’ve seen a ghost?" Ian asked curiously.

"It’s not the first time. I’m used to it. Don’t worry about it."

When she reached the classroom door, Vivian Quinn understood why.

A banner was stretched across the classroom entrance with the words written in large letters: "VIVIAN QUINN, MURDERER, WALKS FREE!"
