What Do You Mean I'm The Captain Of A Yandere Mercenary Company?-Chapter 435: Escort To Tavra
We had to wait for a bit at the rendezvous spot alongside a few other Mercs that had showed up there early.
At the appointed time, a C Class Corvette accompanied by four B Class ships approached from the direction of the station.
That brought our numbers up to four C Class ships, six B Class ships and seven A Class ships if you were to include us in the counting.
As the larger ship slowed down, my console notified me of an incoming call and I swiped my hand over it to accept the call.
A screen in front of me popped up to show all the Captains of the ships that were around us, the largest screen being dominated by a bespectacled man wearing a suit.
"Ah, greetings everyone. I understand all of you have accepted the job of escorting us to the Tavra Research Station. We have some high profile people that we are ferrying to that station and usually we would be able to handle this ourselves, but the reports of increased pirate activity has led us to look for more people on this last stretch to the system itself. You'll be paid for each day it takes to reach there but since our priority is getting our clients there, we want to minimise the danger as much as possible. That's why you won't be reimbursed for any combat encounters on this job. Let's try to avoid fighting as much as possible unless there is absolutely no choice."
Almost immediately, one of the captains let out a dissatisfied grunt, "What? You're not even going to reimburse us?"
I guess this guy didn't read the details of the job huh? This is why you should read your contracts.
"No. But in the event that there is a fight, we will not exert claim over any post battle loot and you are free to claim your spoils of war."
"If you ain't reimbursing us, I'm not interested in this job anymore."
"That's fine. Please withdraw your application and leave."
The screen for that captain shut off and one of the A Class fighters turned away to fly back to the station.
The client of this job then nodded at the rest of us, "Anyone else has a problem with the scope and rewards of this job?"
No one else reacted.
Guess that means we're down to four C Class, six B Class and six A Class ships.
I would say this was still a sizable force with four C Class ships which consisted of a Corvette, two medium Gunboats and our Combat Freighter.
I'd think most pirates would steer away from a group like this and any pirates that are big enough to take this group on probably wouldn't be interested in attacking us anyway.
Seeing that no one else protested, the leader of this expedition then nodded, "Very well then. We will send the flight path to everyone as well as an optimal flight formation. I know you might have your own ideas on how and where to fly your ship in this formation but please remember our goal isn't to engage in combat but to avoid them. So if possible, this formation would deter enemies from engaging us. I look forward to working with all of you in the next few days. May the light of Terra guide all of you."
A few of the captains returned the saying before the communications were cut.
Right after that, a new notification beep came from behind and I turned back to look at Amber who was bent over the map console.
"They sent us the flight path, Tera. And they've set us at… The very back of the convoy."
"Is that bad?" I asked.
"I think it's fine. They most likely saw our armaments and placed us here as an artillery platform."
Well, I guess I'm ok with that then. I'm just worried that we might get hit from behind but I guess unless they have some kind of stealth module, we should be fine.
The rest of the captains started arranging themselves according to where they were positioned though I did notice some of them taking longer than normal to move. My guess was that they tried to protest against their positions but finally gave up when they realised the captain wasn't making any changes.
Once everyone was in formation, he connected all of us to a call again before giving the signal for us to start up our Travel Drives to fly towards the Warp Gate in the system.
Not gonna lie, just something about watching all these ships flying in formation together just felt really cool… And I kind of want to be able to do that one day as well.
"Right… Since we're already at Travel speeds, we can relax a little," I announced, stretching my arms over my head.
Ries got up from the pilot seat and gave me a cute salute, "I'll be heading back to the workshop Boss! Let me know if you need anything!"
"Do you need my help again?" Amber asked, looking up from the map console.
The Maochatte turned to her with an excited look on her face, "Oh yes please! There's one part that I need some help with!"
Oh, that reminds me…
I turned to Ries, "You're still working on the power armour right?"
"Eh? Ah, that's right Boss. Sorry but… Am I too slow in fixing it?"
I quickly shook my head, "Ah, no, no. That's not why I was asking. I just wondered if I could go and see what you've done with it for now?"
"Ohhh~ Of course, Boss! For Boss to take an interest in my work is a great honour for me, nyaa!"
Oh wow, I know she wasn't even just giving me lip service because she got so excited she even let out a 'nyaa'.
That's so cute.
Mara and Lea told me that they would stay on the bridge to ensure our ship stays on course so I followed the two girls to Ries's workshop.
When we got there, I honestly thought that tools and materials would be strewn all about the place but surprisingly, everything was arranged really neatly.
I could even see that the power armours she was using as reference were strung up on the wall with each part being labelled by a holographic projection of what they were.
And on the far side was the power armour that she was in the midst of reassembling, the parts also carefully arranged into containers left beside it.

Ries then grabbed me by the hand and pulled me towards the power armour she was assembling.
"Look, look, Boss! I already managed to figure out how the internal power generator works! Right now I'm in the middle of trying to optimise it so that it runs better! If my calculations are correct, if I replace the type seven Isotope with the synthesised type seventy six, I could even get it to generate twice the normal amount of power!"
She pulled away from me to reach her hand towards the space in front of the power armour, prompting a screen to appear which showed some kind of equation that I had no idea what it was trying to show.
She pointed at the numbers while her tail swished behind her excitedly, "Look, Boss! Over here would cut the ignition cost by half. Then comparing these numbers, the overall output is also increased by half so if we were to just replace the wiring here and here to reduce the heat generated, we can effectively double the generator output!"
Yeah… I kind of understood but not really. Still, she's really cute as she was hopping around and clearly excited to explain it so I just watched her with a slight smile.
Amber then leaned over to me and whispered, "Do you understand, Tera?"
"Not really," I whispered back, still watching Ries gesturing at the screen in front of her. "But I just know that she's really cute."
"Ehehehe~ I agree~"
Ries then suddenly turned to Amber, "Amber! Could I trouble you to weld these protective covers together? I think we can try igniting it just to see if it works!"
Amber grinned, "Leave it to me~"
She then turned to shoot me a wink, which basically told me that she was most likely trying to show off or something.
She stuck out her index finger and a flame ignited right above it before she moved over to Ries who was holding two metal pieces together while wearing a pair of goggles that I didn't even notice her put on.
Amber didn't bother putting on any eye protection before the fire intensified and started melting the two metals to fuse together.
Sparks flew and the metal glowed white hot as her fire did its thing, completing the process in less than a few seconds.
She then pulled her hand back and blew on her finger, extinguishing the flame before grinning at me again.
So cool~ And I'm not just saying that because of the fire~
