Chapter 25 - I'm still human(Bonus Chapter)

"Mr. Isagi!" Masaru called out, his voice laced with urgency as he sprinted across the open space toward the man. His heart pounded wildly in his chest—not from exertion, but from sheer shock. His eyes, wide with disbelief, were locked onto Mr. Isagi, who stood there, surrounded by a lingering, invisible aura of overwhelming energy.

Masaru never imagined such a day would come. The man he looked up to—no both his boss at work and his teacher at school would turn it to be more than just an ordinary human. No mere human could ever possess such terrifying, almost tangible power.

"What happened?" Masaru asked, his voice rising slightly as the weight of the situation pressed down on him. His thoughts raced, trying to make sense of what he had just witnessed. The world he thought he knew had just cracked open, and everything he had taken for granted suddenly seemed uncertain and strange.

"You'll be the one answering my questions here!" Mr. Isagi barked, his voice cutting through the air like a sharp blade. His tone held a seriousness Masaru had never heard before—stern and commanding, enough to send an involuntary shiver running down his spine.

"Did anything happen to you... No, rather—what happened to you?" Mr. Isagi demanded, stepping closer, his sharp gaze piercing straight into Masaru's soul.

"I... I don't understand!" Masaru stammered, his mind a whirlwind of confusion. How could he answer something he didn't even fully comprehend himself?

"Who turned you into a vampire?"

The question dropped like a thunderclap. Masaru's entire body jolted, as if an electric shock had surged through his veins. Instinctively, he jumped back, putting a few feet of distance between himself and Mr. Isagi. His heart raced in panic, confusion clouding his every thought. He opened his mouth, desperate to say something—to deny, to explain—but the words caught in his throat.

"What do you mean, vampires?! Ain't those just fairy tal..." Masaru began, his voice trembling slightly. Yet, the look in Mr. Isagi's eyes—unflinching, knowing—made him falter mid-sentence. It was pointless.

"I see... there's no use feigning innocence," Masaru admitted in a defeated tone, his shoulders slumping slightly. "You see right through me."

"Don't bother lying to me," Mr. Isagi said firmly, his voice losing its edge as he offered a reassuring, genuine smile. "I think you should come clean. It'll only make things easier for the both of us. Don't be scared—no matter what, you're still my little employee."

For some reason, despite the heavy atmosphere, those words made Masaru feel a little calmer. A small measure of the fear gripping his heart loosened, enough for him to find his voice again.

"You knew from the get-go, didn't you? That's what you meant when you said... how unfortunate," Masaru said quietly, realization dawning on him. He lifted his head, his eyes serious.

"I finally understand... but I think I'm truly fortunate. Becoming a vampire... might just be the best thing that ever happened to me. It's given me a new path—a path that I never thought I'd ever walk."

Mr. Isagi's smile disappeared, replaced by a deep frown that furrowed his brow. His eyes darkened as he absorbed Masaru's words.

"Who turned you into an undead?" he asked once more, his voice low and pressing.

"It was... a classmate of mine," Masaru confessed after a brief pause, glancing down at his feet.

"Apparently, she said I was attacked by some kind of monster—a fallen. And... in order to save me, she turned me into a vampire." His voice wavered with uncertainty. Even now, Masaru himself wasn't entirely sure how everything had unfolded that night. But he trusted Akane. He trusted her words.

"I see," Mr. Isagi said, folding his arms, his posture rigid. "So you've found peace with becoming a vampire. Let me ask you something... What do you think a vampire is? Or rather, what do you think an undead is?"

"An undead?" Masaru echoed, scratching the back of his head nervously. He thought about it for a moment. "Hmm... I'd say an undead is a type of existence that isn't human... but at the same time, they possess traits of humanity. They're supernatural existences!"

Mr. Isagi let out a long, heavy sigh, rubbing his temples as if trying to soothe a headache.

"Your ignorance has led you to this point, albeit it wasn't your fault," he said finally. "But your explanation is too vague to even be considered an explanation."

He stepped closer, his voice turning sharper.

"Now listen closely—and listen well. You're about to hear it from an expert."

Masaru straightened up unconsciously, the seriousness in Mr. Isagi's tone leaving no room for argument.

"Undead," Mr. Isagi began, "are simply monsters. Monsters that differ from normal logic. What makes an undead an undead isn't their strength, or their supernatural abilities. It's the simple fact that they no longer require a heart to survive. That's what sets them apart from all other beings."

He paused to let the words sink in before continuing.

"All undead are Supernaturals, but not all Supernaturals are undead," Mr. Isagi emphasized, locking eyes with Masaru. "That's an important distinction. And I couldn't help but notice... that you saved a little lad a few moments ago. My guess? He was from the Kuroya clan."

Masaru blinked in surprise, but said nothing. Mr. Isagi was too sharp—nothing escaped his notice.

"He's a werewolf," Mr. Isagi continued. "Unlike vampires, werewolves aren't undead. They're simply... not human. They still possess a human heart. And because of that, they're far more human than vampires like you."

The words hit Masaru harder than he expected. He opened his mouth to speak but found he had no immediate rebuttal.

"You've lost your heartbeat," Mr. Isagi said quietly, almost sorrowfully. "No matter what you do, you can never be considered human again. And you think exchanging your humanity for strength is the right path to walk?"

He shook his head, disappointment etched deep into his features.

"You've only created more problems for yourself. Even with all these inhuman powers you now have... you'll still lose badly to an old human like me."

The bitterness in Mr. Isagi's voice was unmistakable. Though he had retired from hunting non-humans, it didn't mean he was ready to accept that those he cared for would tread that path.

"What do you mean by human?" Masaru asked hesitantly, struggling to find the right words. "A few minutes ago, what I felt from you was more..."

Before he could finish, Mr. Isagi raised a hand and cut him off sharply.

"Mankind," Mr. Isagi said with conviction, "would always find a way to adapt to any situation. Just like how vampires possess blood energy, or witches have magic, humans have the ability to wield other forms of energy—ki, aether, chakra."

He gestured broadly around them, as if to illustrate his point.

"That little display of power you saw earlier—Mugen and I releasing our aether—that's one of the greatest weapons humans possess. But it requires a human heart to be able to wield. And that's something you've lost."

He said the last part with undeniable finality, like a judge passing a sentence.

Masaru stood there, stunned. The words sank deep into his mind, stirring a storm of emotions he didn't know how to contain. He slowly placed a hand on his chest, feeling the rhythmic beat within.

"I still have a human heart," he whispered defiantly, his voice trembling slightly. "It's just... that I have something else inside of me too. A core."

He looked up at Mr. Isagi with a pleading expression, desperate for him to understand.

"That doesn't mean I'm heartless," Masaru said firmly, pressing his palm harder against his chest where he still felt the undeniable thrum of life.

"If I truly didn't have a heart anymore... would I still feel it beating?"

A/N: I feel like I'm getting a little bit carried away although I can't quite tell, maybe I'm focusing on masaru too much, for the last two and next two Chapters I've been and I'll be doing a lot of info dumping to lay the ground work for the further of the story, I also feel like I'm ignoring Akane or even Renji Kuroya, or I'm focusing more on Japan too much or perhaps it's about time I introduced other characters so it's simple I'm a man of versatility so.
