Chapter 45: What the eyes shouldn’t see

Jessica’s POV.

An angry red patch glared at us as Annabelle cooled the burn with running water. That was the most we could do at the moment.

"We’ll head to the hospital once the pain reduces," Annabelle said. Her face was etched with deep worry.

I clenched my teeth, willing the pain to go away. It stung like crazy. "I think I can manage. I’m not sure the sting will completely go any time soon."

Thankfully, it was a first degree burn. It won’t leave a scar.

"Alright. Hold me tight, one step at a time."

I nodded, throwing my arm around her shoulder as we made our way slowly out of the restroom. Every step felt like a jolt of electricity through my body, but I gritted my teeth and kept moving.

My skirt was lifted to avoid brushing against the fragile skin. This was not my first time getting scolded by hot coffee, but this one seemed different. I wouldn’t be surprised if the water was maliciously brought to a boil.

Stepping into the coffee shop, everyone looked our way, but their faces were devoid of pity. Some looked at me with mockery, some giggled, and others just stared blankly.

I glanced around, the barista was nowhere to be found, someone else had replaced her.

I knew it, that girl did it intentionally, otherwise, she would have been here. My eyes narrowed. If my hunch was right, I won’t let her get away with it.

We arrived at the teaching hospital inside the university a while later and the doctor treated my leg with care and bandaged it.

Just as we left the hospital, we saw Max matching over, the look on his face was that of anger and worry.

"I’m telling him off, it’s time he stays away from you," Annabelle said to me in a hushed voice.

Though it was not Max’s fault, Annabelle was right. If being friends with him would put my life in danger, I’d rather pass.

"Jessica, are you okay? I heard what happened," he said, trying to touch me but Annabelle swat his hand away.

"Back off man! I think it’s time you stay away from Jessica. Yesterday, she narrowly missed the coffee, but today, she wasn’t so lucky. Who knows what your crazy girlfriend would do tomorrow? She might throw acid on her!"

We weren’t sure Celine did it, but yeah, who else would?

"I could easily let the incident from yesterday slide because no damage was done, but today, I can’t forgive your girlfriend and that barista girl." I took a deep breath, Annabelle had set the premise and I couldn’t disappoint her. Moreover, I was genuinely upset. "Max, Annabelle is right. Please, stay away from me."

Without giving him the chance to speak, we bypassed him and walked away. I could feel his hot gaze on my back. I liked him as a friend, but I can’t take the trouble.

I was supposed to see Professor Ednut Timberlake by 4, but at this point, I couldn’t wait until then, so I went to his office with Annabelle, but on reaching the building, Annabelle was pulled away by a few friends, leaving me to go alone."

The Professor’s office was on the last floor of the three story building. Taking the stairs with my injured leg was not something I could manage, so I took the elevator. Arriving on the floor, I found his name on his office door. With a knock, I turned the knob and went in.

"Ahh! Fuck me hard! Faster, Ednut, faster!"

I froze, stupefied by what I was seeing. Professor Ednut hunched over a woman, his pants pooled at his ankles!

The moaning and growling sounds filled my senses, and suddenly, I jerked back to reality when he called my name.

"Jessica?"

"I...I’m sorry, I–" I turned around and bolted out, slamming the door behind me. I didn’t wait, I ran down the passageway. The pain on my leg shot to my mind, but I didn’t care. I wanted to be gone from there as soon as possible.

The elevator door refused to open. When I turned, I saw Professor Ednut rushing out of this office, coming my way and saying my name in a pleading voice.

I didn’t wait, I took to my heels and dashed for the stairs.

He ought to be scared. The lady he was banging was from my class. She was a student, and the rules clearly forbade staff-student relationships.

Was I going to tell on them, no. But I’ve watched too many TVs to know that I was in a sticky situation. They could do something to me to make sure their secret was hidden.

Thankfully, he didn’t chase me down the stairs. Leaving the buildings, I tried to call Annabelle but she wouldn’t take my calls, so I texted her before leaving the school.

Arriving at Hilda’s place, I took the keys from under the foot mat and went in. The first thing I did was to fall in the bed, finally processing everything that happened today.

Was my reaction too much? We’re adults after all, we could have had a proper conversation, where I’d assure them that their secret was safe.

I shook my head, what if Sandra hit me on the head with something to make me pass out, and then, I die? frёewebnoѵel.ƈo๓

Or, what if they push me down the stairs and make me lose my memory? That would be worse.

’Stop it, that’s overthinking. They might not have done anything to you.’

Right, I might have overreacted. I sighed and sat up.

"Jessica, you must have gone crazy. They’re too single people in love." I thought aloud.

Come to think of it why’s a staff-student relationship forbidden, but a student-student relationship is allowed? I mean, Max and Celine are dating.

"Ding Dong!"

My heart jumped when I heard the doorbell. For a moment, I thought it was professor Ednut. Damn me! I have to stop watching thrillers and suspect films.

I got down from bed. The only nice thing in Hilda’s house was the tall bed. Her door doesn’t even have a pinhole to make sure you’re not opening the door for a criminal.

I opened a crack on the door and peeped through it. But the door was suddenly pulled apart.

"If you’re so scared, why don’t you rent a better place with security?" Liam said, a little annoyed.

"What are you doing here?" I asked, standing by the door. It was clear I didn’t want him inside. "This is not my place, and I’d be rude for you to come in."

"I know, that’s why you’re coming with me." She said, and stretched out his hand.

I frowned, "To where?"

"I’ve not had lunch, accompany me for dinner."

"I can’t come with you."

"Then, let me in," he said.

"You can’t come in." I hissed, but he had no intention of leaving. A moment later, I sighed. "Fine. Give me a minute."
