Chapter 61: We’re not married

I shook my head, "No one came to mind." Actually, two people did. My brother and Liam. However, I was sure that my brother would have called to check on things with me, and probably gave me a heads-up...?

Well, I didn’t know much about how he handled matters. Perhaps he did but didn’t speak about it because he was waiting for me to talk to him about it...?

As for Liam, he would have confronted me immediately and nagged me about how I’d been keeping secrets from him.

I sighed, feeling another headache coming. I was starting to get tired of all these mysteries...

"Hold up! FUCKING NO WAY!!"

My head snapped back to Annabelle, she was on her phone, her eyes almost popping out of their sockets, and mouth agape like she saw death. "What’s up with you?" I was slightly curious. It was a rare case to see her this rattled.

"CEO Kristen got involved in an accident and had lost his memories..."

It wasn’t new. This matter made it to the news two weeks ago, and Starplus Group of companies didn’t make a statement, leaving everyone guessing and shareholders shifting in their seats with anxiety. Was Annabelle just finding that out now? She didn’t leave me to keep guessing as she quickly continued;

"Reports say there’s no remedy - it’s permanent damage!" She shoved her phone into my hand, "Read that, oh my fuck!" freewebnøvel.coɱ

My heart trembled when I glanced down at the screen. The news was on every news site and media outlets. Another thing that was throwing everyone into a frenzy was the news about CEO Liam of the Crawford Corps had shown interest in ’saving’ Starplus Group of companies - he wanted to purchase the giant company!

What was Liam up to? Why did he take this drastic step? Was this to force Kristen to reveal his so-called truth, and if so, would Kristen fall for this?

"This doesn’t make any sense. Why would CEO Liam want to kick Kristen when he’s down? He couldn’t wait to sweep in and ’save’ the day. This begs the question, does Liam have a hand in this–"

"Assumptions, Annabelle, assumptions." I quickly retorted, handing her phone back to her. "Nothing is set in stone yet. The Crawford Corp and Starplus Group of Companies haven’t released any statement yet, so we can’t treat this matter so seriously. You know how the media works."

Annabelle was flabbergasted as she stared at me like I’d grown ten heads. "You’re defending CEO Liam? Didn’t you say you hated him?"

Stunned, I cleared my throat awkwardly. I did remember saying that but... "W– well, this is not a matter of whether I hate him or not. I just feel that the media these days is the fastest way to ruin someone’s reputation and I didn’t like that. Have you forgotten what I went through so soon?"

I managed to pull a wool over her eyes as she slowly nodded with agreement. I sighed with relief. Good thing she believed my bullshit, otherwise, how would I have explained my situation, when I don’t fully understand it myself?

...

Liam didn’t come to pick me up today, so I took a cab after me and Annabelle parted ways.

I didn’t know what to expect when I got home, but on arrival, I was having mixed feelings. The house was unusually quiet - unlike in the last two weeks, where I’d return home to Liam glaring daggers at the innocent-looking Kristen.

This sudden quiet atmosphere made me wonder if Liam’s little prank had managed to pull Kristen away from the house. But then again, if Liam had been right about Kristen...if Kristen had truly been deceiving me all along, I wouldn’t know how devastated and heartbroken I’d be.

"Tada!"

Startled, I turned to see Kristen smiling brightly as he held a cake to my face. But that wasn’t the only thing that caught my attention. Kristen was wearing an apron over his shirtless body, and his hair was mussed, as if he’d been cooking for hours.

The apron was covered in flour and what looked like chocolate stains, and Kristen’s hands were streaked with icing. He looked adorable, and for a moment, all my doubts and fears melted away. This man certainly couldn’t be who Liam said he was. Perhaps, Liam was doing too much out of jealous...?

"Surprise!" Kristen exclaimed, his eyes sparkling with excitement, like a child’s. "I made your favorite cake, and I was hoping we could celebrate... us."

The smile that was teasing my heart froze, and my heart skipped a beat as I stared at Kristen. What did he mean by "us"? And why was he being so sweet and romantic? But before I could ask any questions, Kristen caught me of guard, planting a kiss on my lips. My muscles stiffened, the aftertaste of chocolate and icing on my lips reminding me of what just happened.

"I’ve missed your lips, wifey," he beamed, looking so sweet like a child, but I didn’t see it that way. Kristen just stole a kiss from me!

I was furious, but remembering his condition, I reined in my anger and shut my eyes and took few deep breaths to calm my emotions.

"You’re... not supposed to do that!" I finally said after a while.

Kristen’s eyes sparkled with amusement, and he chuckled, leaning over again, but I placed a hand on his chest, creating a barrier. "Oh, come on, wifey," he teased, his voice low and husky. "Don’t be shy. Doctor Livia said that kissing your wife every time strengthens the relationship."

I felt a flush rise to my cheeks as I pushed Kristen away, putting some safe distance between us. "Kristen, stop it," I said firmly, trying to sound calm despite the turmoil inside me. "We need to talk."

Kristen’s grin faltered, and he looked at me with a hint of concern. "What’s wrong?" he asked, his voice softer now.

"You and I," my fingers demonstrated that. "We’re not married."

His brows creased, and he looked at me with a mixture of confusion and amusement. "What are you talking about?" he asked, his voice laced with a hint of laughter. "Of course, we’re married. We’ve been over this, remember?"

I shook my head, feeling a surge of frustration. "No, Kristen, we’re not. I’m married to Liam, not you."

Kristen’s expression changed, his eyes narrowing as he took a step closer to me. "What’s going on here?" he asked, his voice low and even, but with a hint of underlying tension. "How could you be married to your brother?"

"..."

I blinked, how serious was Kristen’s amnesia again? I wondered, then cleared my throat and started explaining like a child. "Liam is not my brother. But you, on the other hand, are my older brother’s friend. You’re —"
