When the Side Character Gets a System and Travels through Difference Worlds-Chapter 47: Chi Mo 1
Tan Deming glanced at the math competition book. "You like this one? I’ll go ask around later and see if his family has any more books like it."
Tan You replied, "Okay, Grandpa. Please help me look. I think it’s pretty interesting."
When it came to finding things, Tan You was no match for Tan Deming. His social network was truly vast; he knew practically everyone for miles around.
This was thanks to Tan Deming’s profession. In the countryside, funerals required banquets, and that was precisely his line of work. From the initial mourning rites to the cremation and burial, and even the subsequent rituals on the seventh and forty-ninth days, Tan Deming handled everything in perfect order.
As a result, when Tan You was a child, she often tagged along with him, eating at all sorts of households. His connections were built up slowly over several decades.
So, whenever Tan Deming wanted to find something, he could go directly to the right person’s home with a clear target in mind. He hardly needed any intermediaries, which made things incredibly convenient.
Anyway, in Tan You’s eyes, her grandpa was far more reliable than her dad. She used to believe that a great father wouldn’t have a useless son, but after decades of experience, Tan You had discovered that most sons couldn’t measure up to their fathers.
But no matter what, she would be one of the few who did. She would make it so that Tan Lin could no longer suppress her at will, and so that Cheng Wenhui could no longer lecture her whenever she pleased.
That evening, after dinner, the Beauty System kept flitting back and forth in front of Tan You. Its intention was obvious. Tan You flicked it, not wanting to keep the little system in suspense, and decisively set out to do the mission.
She had drawn this mission two days ago, but she hadn’t started immediately. Instead, she had been contemplating how to approach it. She was a bit of a perfectionist; if she was going to do something, she wanted to do it perfectly.
She didn’t want to work so hard only to end up with a basic reward. That would bother her to no end.
She had been reviewing the client Chi Mo’s life for a long time and already had a rough idea of what to do. However, in general, her performance couldn’t deviate too much from the client’s personality.
For example, the client was a dancer who had never been exposed to the world of finance. Tan You couldn’t just go in and start steamrolling everything. Even if she did become a financial analyst, it wouldn’t align with the client’s personality and life experience.
So, ultimately, Tan You needed to stick as closely as possible to the client’s profession. But the thought of the client being a dancer made Tan You’s face scrunch up.
’I don’t have an artistic bone in my body. Can I really continue her dance career? If I lack artistic expression, then I’ll just have to make up for it with difficulty.’
’Dancers need their own original works. If I can release new pieces quickly enough, and if they’re difficult enough, maybe the mission won’t be so hard?’
With these thoughts in mind, Tan You opened her eyes. A quick look around told her exactly where she was: Chi Mo’s bedroom. And it was currently high noon.
’How strange. Back where I was, dusk was falling, but here the sun is at its zenith.’ Tan You threw off the covers, got out of bed, and after pulling open the curtains, she gave a big stretch.
In the bathroom, as she washed up, she looked at the face in the mirror—so completely different from her own—and felt the excellent eyesight. A smile tugged at the corners of her lips.
The reason she’d been eager to go out on a mission was, one, for the Intelligence Value, and two, because without her nearsightedness, she could see so many things she usually missed.
"A pretty girl." After finishing washing up, Tan You casually applied some toner and lotion and sat down at the vanity. Unlike Chi Mo’s previous routine of applying makeup, Tan You tapped the system instead.
"I remember you said Beauty Value can’t be used on my own body," Tan You said, propping her chin on her hand. "Does that mean it can be used on the client?"
The Beauty System bobbed up and down, as if nodding. "That’s right! Beauty Value can be applied to the client. As long as a girl is beautiful enough, no man can resist her."
Tan You shook her head. "That logic is clearly flawed. A man might like you for your looks and figure, but that kind of affection is too shallow. It can’t stand the test of time."
The Beauty System was stubborn. "That just means the girl isn’t beautiful enough."
Tan You gave up on arguing with the Beauty System. She didn’t need to convince it with her own point of view; she simply didn’t agree with the idea of using one’s looks to please others.
"Show me Chi Mo’s status screen."
The moment she spoke, Chi Mo’s initial stats appeared before her. But compared to her own status screen, Chi Mo’s only had one category: Appearance, with an initial score of 72.
Next to the score was a plus sign, followed by the number 40. This was clearly the 40 points of Beauty Value from the initial gift package and Tan You’s ten-pull gacha draws.
The Beauty System spun in circles in front of her. "Host, add the Beauty Value! Add the Beauty Value! You can’t use it on yourself anyway, so just add it! Add it!"
Tan You knew this little thing was after her points. She glanced at the face in the mirror. "Chi Mo is already quite pretty. I don’t think there’s any need to add Beauty Value. She’s beautiful enough."
The Beauty System said, "Host, our slogan is to become a stunning, drop-dead gorgeous beauty! She only qualifies as a ’pretty girl,’ not a ’great beauty.’"
Tan You’s interest was piqued. "What score counts as a great beauty?"
The Beauty System immediately became serious. "According to the system’s judgment, a score over 90 is a great beauty. If the host bestows Beauty Value upon them, the host’s mission reward... ZZZZTT..."
The Beauty System couldn’t finish its sentence, but Tan You caught the implication. It meant that if she gave the Beauty Value to the client, it would affect her mission reward during the final settlement.
’So how does the system evaluate mission completion? Does it also take the client’s evaluation into account?’
"Host, add the Beauty Value," the Beauty System pleaded. While Tan You was pondering, it finally recovered from its wave of punishment. This time, it didn’t dare to reveal any more spoilers, simply trying every means possible to persuade her to add the points.
"Fine, add it," Tan You said, not voicing her suspicions. "Bring it to 90 for now."
"You’re not maxing it out?" The Beauty System was a little disappointed. ’The host still has so much Beauty Value left.’
Tan You said, "I’m saving it. What if I need it later? It’s better to have a reserve and not worry."
"Fine," the Beauty System said, feeling a bit wronged, but it still did as told, adding 18 points of Beauty Value to Chi Mo. The instant the Beauty Value was deducted from Tan You’s account, Chi Mo’s face changed accordingly.
Chi Mo originally had doe-like eyes. Because of the appearance optimization, the corners of her eyes tilted up slightly, subtly washing away the hint of sorrow in her features. Her nose became more delicate, and her slightly prominent front teeth seemed to shrink a little, giving her a more playful look.
Her previously somewhat puffy face returned to its optimal state, and her sparse eyebrows grew thicker, looking as if they could be styled in any shape.
