When the Side Character Gets a System and Travels through Difference Worlds-Chapter 65: Chi Mo 19
Tan You: I only drove once after getting my license. The car is basically just gathering dust in the garage. There’s no way I can drive on the road like this. I need to be responsible for others and for myself, so I should probably find an instructor and get some proper practice.
Tan You: My standards aren’t high. I’ll be happy if I can just drive on my own before the show is over.
While Chi Mo had a driver’s license, Tan You didn’t. And Chi Mo’s memories of learning to drive were already distant, so Tan You would have to start from scratch.
Lin Meng: You definitely should practice. It’s being responsible to society, too. I’m going to go drool over the video now. I could watch it a thousand times!
Tan You pursed her lips in amusement. She now understood an internet saying: compared to men, women undoubtedly enjoy looking at beautiful women more. Wasn’t that obvious right now?
"Lawyer Xu, what are you staring at so intently?" In a private room, a man nudged Xu Jike’s arm. He clearly didn’t understand why the usually smooth and sophisticated man was so quiet at the moment. Wasn’t this usually his stage?
Xu Jike turned off his phone. "It’s nothing, just a message in the group chat. We were able to win this case thanks to the cooperation of our many colleagues at the firm. And of course, we must thank President Zheng for trusting our law firm..."
Watching Xu Jike work the room, his colleague thought, ’Now *that’s* the guy I know. Just now, he looked like he’d lost his soul. I wonder what he saw. I heard Lawyer Xu went on a variety show? What kind of show was it?’
The thought flashed through his mind, and the colleague immediately raised his glass, starting another round of toasts and drinks.
The lively gathering continued until around midnight. After seeing President Zheng off into his car, Xu Jike finally had some time to himself. He leaned back in the rear seat, in no hurry to call a designated driver. Instead, he pulled out his phone to watch the video from the group chat.
The group chat already had hundreds of new messages. Xu Jike didn’t have the patience to scroll through them one by one. Instead, he scrolled all the way up to find the link that was first posted in the group.
Soon, a melodious tune filled the car. Watching the figure on the screen dance gracefully, Xu Jike became lost in thought without realizing it. Normally, when he looked at Chi Mo, he just thought she was very beautiful, but nothing particularly special.
But when she was dressed up in all her splendor, when she began to move, Xu Jike found he couldn’t tear his eyes away from her. It was as if she was glowing, concerned only with her own breathtaking beauty, completely oblivious to how it affected others.
After watching it five or six times on repeat, Xu Jike also found Chi Mo’s personal account. When he saw the flood of comments under the video calling her "Wifey" or "Fairy," Xu Jike couldn’t help but grind his teeth.
People always talk about a pearl being hidden by dust. But before he could even hide this pearl away for himself, others had already seen its luster. Speaking of which, did he even have a chance to keep this pearl for himself now?
The more he thought about it, the more hopeless Xu Jike felt. He didn’t understand why Chi Mo was so cold to him. Her attitude toward the other male guests was clearly fine, but she was exceptionally aloof only with him.
He considered his own circumstances to be quite good, and his profession was very respectable. As for his looks, they were above average. So why couldn’t she see any of that? Xu Jike didn’t understand at all.
Tan You, of course, had no idea that one video of hers would make Xu Jike so anxious and insecure. How could she be omnipotent enough to see a thousand miles away? It seemed like the Beauty System could do it, but Tan You had never asked it to.
The short video was uploaded to her personal platform, and Tan You parted ways with the director’s team, packed her bags, and flew back to N City, where Chi Mo lived. She was truly busy. Besides her part-time job at the dance studio, she also had to practice with the dance troupe.
As for the messages in the group chat, Tan You didn’t pay them any more attention. The one thing troubling her now was how to avoid blowing her cover in front of Father and Mother Chi. After all, she was supposed to formally meet Chi Mo’s parents after the show ended.
The thought vexed her. She could never imitate the way Chi Mo acted cute and coddled with her parents. Even when she was Tan You, she rarely acted that way with her own mom and dad. And her life as Han Tingting was even more of a non-starter—in three or four years, she had only met Han Tingting’s parents two or three times.
So, how to get along with her client’s parents while also putting on the airs of a doting daughter... Tan You was truly at a loss. At this thought, Tan You pressed her upper body closer to the floor, clearly trying to use physical exhaustion to release her inner tension.
"What’s wrong? I feel like you’re a bit distracted today." Teacher Wen had been watching Tan You for a while. She felt something was a little off about Tan You today. A dance can reflect the dancer’s state of mind.
Tan You moved her head and looked toward Teacher Wen. "When did you get here?"
Teacher Wen smiled. "I’ve been here for a little while. I sense your mind isn’t calm today. Were you unhappy filming the show?"
"No, not at all," Tan You said, shaking her head. "I’m just a little bothered. They keep asking me what my impression of the male guests is."
Unable to tell her the real situation, Tan You just came up with a random excuse. In truth, Tan You didn’t feel the male guests were a bother to her in the slightest.
"So, what do you think of the male guests?" Teacher Wen was in a rare gossipy mood. "Generally, for people who dare to go on these shows, if nothing else, their careers must be pretty solid."
"Just because he’s successful, I have to see him in a different light?" Tan You said flatly. "They’re all nice people, just not the right fit. They want to try but are afraid of getting hurt. They want this and they want that. In the end, it’s all just weighing the pros and cons."
"Weighing the pros and cons," Teacher Wen said, leaning against the barre. "You’re not wrong to say that. Many people say that after going through one marriage, they become more cautious and considerate when approaching the next one."
"Perhaps," Tan You said with a thoughtful smile. "But I don’t want that kind of careful consideration that comes from weighing pros and cons. Of course, the most crucial thing is that there’s no spark."
"Then just have fun on the show." Teacher Wen didn’t try to persuade Tan You to pursue a relationship. "I saw your video, too. It was filmed exceptionally well. The dance moves weren’t overly complex, but they were both beautiful and artistic."
"You used to smile quite a lot, but now when I watch you dance, this kind of cold, aloof feeling just comes out. It seems completely different from before. Did something happen?"
Tan You wasn’t surprised that Teacher Wen could see all this. People who work in the arts can often see right into others’ hearts.
"I just wanted to try something different. You can just say I’ve had an awakening." Unable to find another reason, Tan You could only make one up on the spot.
"Well, your awakening came a bit late," Teacher Wen teased. "Is your mood any better now?"
"Not bad," Tan You said with a shrug, knowing Teacher Wen was trying to cheer her up.
"If you’re in a better mood, then practice hard. I see you haven’t let your fundamentals slip, so it looks like you haven’t been slacking off." Teacher Wen stood up. "The dance troupe is choreographing a new piece right now. If you’re interested, you should go take a look."
"Okay, I’ll go right now." Tan You scrambled to her feet. She loved watching dance performances. Even though she herself was uncoordinated, that didn’t stop her from enjoying them.
