When the Side Character Gets a System and Travels through Difference Worlds-Chapter 87: Chi Mo 41
"I would never expect a man to change for me. He might be able to do it for a little while, but how long could he really keep it up?" Tan You smiled. "That’s why we’re not a good match. I don’t have any confidence in that."
"Is it that you don’t have confidence in me?" Xu Jike asked urgently. "But time will prove everything..."
Tan You’s smile gradually faded. "Time does prove everything, that’s true. But you don’t need to prove anything to me. Wanting to become a better version of yourself is a good thing for you, but it has nothing to do with me. We’re not a good match, and I won’t waste my energy on someone who is irrelevant to me."
"You called me cold before," Xu Jike said. Despite being told twice that they weren’t a match, he didn’t get angry. His composure was truly excellent; he even managed a smile. "But looking at it now, you’re the one who’s truly cold."
"From the moment filming for this show began, your attitude toward me has always been this cold."
Tan You replied, "Perhaps. It’s because I know we belong to different worlds. My world is very small and simple, but it’s not a place just anyone can wander into."
"I’ve said all I have to say. I’ll be going now. I also wish you the best, Lawyer Xu, in finding the ideal partner you’re looking for." Tan You turned the key to start her scooter, but froze when she heard Xu Jike say one more thing.
"There won’t be another."
Tan You turned her head, looked at Xu Jike, and suddenly smiled. "Lawyer Xu, it’s a big world, and S City is a big city. Sooner or later, you’ll meet a partner who is independent, intelligent, shares your values, and has the same goals in life."
"As for me, I’m just a very ordinary girl. We’re like two parallel lines that will never intersect."
After saying this, Tan You started her little electric scooter and rode straight off. As she rode, she mused to herself, ’This scooter isn’t half bad. Maybe I should get one when I get back?’
Tan You was the last to arrive at the meeting point; all the other female guests were already there. As soon as she saw the other women, Tan You raised an eyebrow and glanced at Gao Jing. "A bad ending for everyone?"
Gao Jing gave a wry smile. "Being an adult is so hard. We all have our own concerns."
Tan You understood, so she didn’t try to console Gao Jing. "In that case, let’s just focus on making money. Ninety percent of life’s problems are caused by money issues."
Gao Jing laughed. "You’re right about that. I need to focus on making money."
With bad endings for the entire cast of the romance show, the director was at a loss. He raised his small megaphone. "Chi Mo, come over for your solo interview."
The director decided to handle Tan You’s solo interview personally. He sat down across from her with an imposing air and got straight to the point. "Did Xu Jike confess his feelings to you before? How come the production team didn’t know about this?"
Tan You just smiled. "It wasn’t that big of a deal."
Seeing the director’s eyebrows start to rise, Tan You told him the truth. "After the first taping, I went to S City to hang out with Gao Jing and the others. While I was there, we all went to an amusement park, and he told me that night."
When the director looked like he was about to press for more, Tan You smiled. "There’s not much else to say. We weren’t a match. If you’re that interested, you should ask him directly. It wouldn’t be right for me to talk about it."
"Alright," the director knew when to quit while he was ahead. "How did you feel about participating in this show?"
"I thought it was great," Tan You smiled. "I made some wonderful friends here. Even though we all have different careers and life experiences, we’re able to appreciate and accept one another, and I think that’s fantastic."
"That’s the biggest thing I’ve gained from this show. Of course, I’m also very grateful to the show’s writers, camera operators, and the director for helping me make my videos. My videos only became so popular because everyone here is so professional."
The director immediately beamed. "That’s also because you’re so talented yourself to be able to film such beautiful videos. It was a real honor for me, too."
After they exchanged a bit of professional flattery, the director started digging for more. "Don’t you feel it’s a shame, rejecting Xu Jike? He’s a really outstanding guy."
"I can see that he’s outstanding," Tan You didn’t take the bait. "But so what? There are plenty of outstanding people in the world. Am I supposed to fall for every single one I meet? What’s crucial is that *I* have to actually like them."
The director finally showed his true intentions. "So, what type of guy do you like?"
Tan You thought for a moment about Chi Mo’s personality traits. "Someone emotionally stable, who’s responsive and reliable, I guess. As for anything else, I can’t really say. Maybe I’ll know when I finally meet the right person?"
After her final solo interview, Tan You ran right into Xu Jike on her way out. She gave him a slight nod and walked past. A moment later, Xu Jike brushed past Chi Mo again, and he took a deep breath, swallowing the overwhelming sadness in his heart.
Sometimes, reality is just that cruel. You meet the perfect person before you’ve had a chance to become your best self. In the end, all that remains is endless regret and sorrow.
The end of the solo interviews marked the official end of filming for everyone. Gao Jing, being the biggest gossip, pulled Tan You aside. "Why was your interview so long? What did the director ask you?"
By now, everyone’s mics had been removed, so they could suddenly speak without any inhibitions.
Tan You briefly explained. Zhou Wenwen was surprised. "When did he confess to you? He moves fast, huh?"
Gao Jing had an all-knowing look on her face. "Don’t tell me it was after we all split up at the amusement park that time?"
Tan You nodded. "Yeah. It’s no big deal, I already turned him down back then. We’re not a match."
Lin Meng chimed in, "You did the right thing. If it’s not a match, you should be direct. He doesn’t seem like the type to settle down anyway. Even if he looks decent now, how long could he keep it up?"
"I get it," Tan You smiled. "Real change should come from within—from wanting to become a better version of yourself, not for someone else."
"Let’s go pack our bags. Does everyone have afternoon flights?" Unwilling to discuss it further, Tan You changed the subject.
"Yep. I just want to go home and get some proper rest," Zhou Wenwen said, stretching languidly. "Thank goodness it’s winter break, so I can rest for a few days."
Lin Meng leaned on Zhou Wenwen’s shoulder. "Not me. I have to work overtime the minute I get back. Little Chi, what about you? Do you have any plans after you get home?"
"I’m really busy too," Tan You said with a frown. "My dance troupe’s tour starts next week, and I still need to practice my routine. If the tour comes to S City, I’ll get you all tickets."
"Oh, awesome! I really want to see you perform on stage. What kind of dance is it this time?"
Tan You answered, "One solo piece and one group dance. The dances I’ve done before were all solos, but this one is different. The choreography is much more complex and professional, and I have to rehearse and coordinate with the backup dancers."
Lin Meng said, "I can’t wait! You know, so many people online try to imitate your dances, but no one even comes close to topping you. You’ve already set the standard for beauty."
"Oh, I wouldn’t go that far," Tan You said humbly. "Everyone else dances really well. I still have a lot to learn from them."
