Who Cares About Him When I'm Married to the Richest Man?-Chapter 14: The Qing Dynasty Ended Early in the Morning
Unexpectedly, the phone on the other end was persistent, ringing continuously. Esther leaned over curiously and asked, "Whose call is it? Why aren’t you answering?"
Elara smiled, "Mason’s."
She raised her hand to mute the phone and flipped it over on the table.
Besides the case tomorrow, she had nothing else to talk about with Mason.
But she had already promised Zion to abandon reconciliation and let Brandon handle the case, so there wasn’t much left to say.
Esther clicked her tongue, "Could the ex-husband suddenly realize after the divorce that he’s truly in love with you? Or does he want someone at home and someone outside? How cheap!"
Elara curled her lips, "Cecilia is his true love."
As for her, she was just a little amusement during a downtime...
"Amusement?"
In the midst of the noisy music at the KTV, Mason felt inexplicably annoyed as he looked at the unanswered phone.
Just now, a group of friends were playing truth or dare. Cecilia continuously lost, and he drank more than half a bottle of white liquor for her. It was his turn to lose this round, and he couldn’t drink anymore, so he chose dare.
Unfortunately, an inconsiderate friend dared him to call his ex-wife.
It was just a game, not something he couldn’t play. He didn’t take it seriously. Elara had always been at his beck and call, not to mention a phone call. Even if he asked her to come over and drink with him, she would willingly agree.
That’s the confidence two years of marriage gave him.
So, without thinking, he called and even put it on speakerphone.
Yet the call was rejected on the other end.
Unable to swallow his pride, he called again several times.
But the calls went unanswered.
At this time, a friend joked, "Brother Jacobs, your ex-wife is ruthless. Cutting ties just days after the divorce? Was your marriage just amusement to her?"
"Amusement?" Mason’s eyes darkened. He irritably tugged his tie and snorted coldly, "She was just amusement to me."
Cecilia snuggled by his side, softly said, "Mason, don’t be angry. Maybe Elara is busy with her new marriage and naturally can’t care about others."
After a pause, she added, "But it’s really too much to keep hanging up. You can still be friends after divorce, why act like strangers?"
Hearing this, Mason’s face turned dark. He sneered, "Let her be."
He reached for his drink and suddenly saw the cufflink on his shirt.
It was a very delicate metal cufflink. He usually tossed his small items around carelessly, and Elara used to organize them for him. Now Cecilia wasn’t good at these things, and he doesn’t like others touching his stuff, so the room was always chaotic.
When he left the house today, he casually took a cufflink to wear, only to realize now it was a gift from Elara.
It seemed to be an anniversary gift for their first year of marriage.
That woman, poor and pretentious, with not much money in hand, but always putting on the independent woman act, refusing his credit cards, even skimping on a gift purchase.
This cufflink seemed to be bought after she scrimped for a long time.
Mason hadn’t cared before, nor did he now. He just glanced at it, then looked away and continued to grab his drink.
Cecilia leaning against his arm, said softly, "Mason, drink less, or your stomach will hurt again tomorrow."
Mason’s expression changed slightly.
He suddenly remembered the previous dinner party, where he drank too much, vomited in the middle of the night, and fell asleep right away. The next morning, he woke up with a splitting headache, no honey water, no hangover soup, and even the vomit on the floor was left uncleaned.
Although the servants at home wouldn’t dare enter his room at will, things like this used to never happen. Elara would take care of everything properly.
Why was he thinking of that woman again?
Mason felt more irritable, pulling Cecilia close and kissing her on the lips.
The guys in the booth whooped, "Whoa, whoa, whoa, there are so many people here, have some decency!"
Seeing the blush quickly spreading across Cecilia’s face, Mason then smiled. Cecilia was his love, always had been.
He stood up with Cecilia and told his friends, "Cecilia and I have things to do tomorrow, we’ll head out first. I’ve settled the bill, so enjoy yourselves."
Walking out of the booth, Cecilia went to the restroom while Mason leaned against the hallway wall waiting for her.
Just then, the door of the next booth opened, and three people with arms around each other’s shoulders came out.
Mason thought he must be seeing things. How could the woman laughing and causing a commotion while drunk be Elara? Wasn’t she always prim and proper, never drinking, or even laughing loudly?
Elara and her group spotted Mason too and stopped in their tracks.
The next second, Esther and Zara simultaneously stepped forward, protecting Elara behind them.
Elara, though not a great drinker, was still sober after having a little, and looked at Mason coldly. After a moment, she nonchalantly looked away and said to her friends, "Let’s go."
Esther was somewhat unwilling, "Seeing his face makes my fists itch. Can’t I give him a punch?"
Zara saw the undisguised melancholy on Elara’s face, quickly nudged Esther, and whispered, "Let’s go, we can punch him another time."
Elara just got divorced, needed to desensitize to that relationship, and this was not the time for entanglements.
Esther sighed, having no choice but to comply.
They walked past Mason without looking at him, as if he wasn’t there.
Mason glared at Elara’s back. He assumed she’d at least greet him, but she completely ignored him!
He spoke angrily, "Elara! Look at what you’ve become! You’re a mess, reeking of alcohol, reckless, and still wandering at midnight. Where’s your modest and graceful demeanor?"
Elara stopped, turned to look at him. The face she once wholeheartedly trusted now made her breathless.
She sneered, "Mr. Jacobs, we’re divorced. Whether I drink, or even spend the night out with male models in a hotel, it’s none of your business. Aren’t you overstepping?"
Mason, who was angered earlier by Elara’s cold demeanor, felt a bit embarrassed now, but he was too proud to admit it, even if he was wrong.
He sternly accused, "You were married to me, representing the Jacobs Family’s face. Even though we’re divorced now, you should still mind your behavior to avoid embarrassing us. The Jacobs Family can’t afford that disgrace!"
Esther, who had been holding back earlier, finally couldn’t restrain herself, jumped out, pointed at Mason’s nose, and cursed,
"How shameless can you get? You had the audacity to cheat and still expect your ex-wife to be loyal? What, did Elara owe you something from a past life that she has to endure this life? Wake up, it’s not the Qing Dynasty anymore! Pah!"
