Chapter 131: A Dangerous Night

Despite the Taciturn Daoist Priest acting tough, Lu Yang and Meng Jingzhou could discern that the battle was not going to conclude so easily. In fact, the best solution would have been for the Taciturn Daoist Priest to grab the two of them and flee, but he hadn’t done so, indicating that he didn’t have the confidence to protect them both from the awakened Fusion cultivators.

Lu Yang tried to summon Yun Zhi with the Big Senior Sister Animal Form Fist but realized that without spirit energy, he couldn’t even transform himself.

The Lu-Style Animal Form Fist is indeed considered a spell.

Meng Jingzhou tested his current abilities. “Although I can’t tap into my powers, my physical strength hasn’t changed much.”

That’s good news.

“What time is it now?”

Lu Yang remembered that the second rule had stated, “From 9pm to 9am, thatched cottages and inns with closed doors are absolutely safe; anywhere else is dangerous.

“It was already past 9pm when our carriage fell. The streets are now empty, likely because everyone has gone home. We must find a place to stay the night or head to the inn!”

There were a few thatched cottages nearby with lights on. Meng Jingzhou knocked on one of the doors and said politely, “Fellow villager, we are cultivators who have accidentally wandered here. Please open the door and let us stay for the night. We will definitely reward you generously. Be it gold or spirit stones, you can choose as you wish!”

Meng Jingzhou tried approaching several houses, but not a single one opened their door.

Lu Yang stopped him. “Don’t waste your energy. Have you forgotten Rule 6 which states that they mustn’t open the doors when they hear a knock on the door? We are surely not the only ones in Buyi Town. There are also ordinary civilians here, and they need to abide by the rules.”

<Rule 20: The townsfolk cannot disclose anything about the town to outsiders.> This implies that there are civilians native to Buyi Town.

Meng Jingzhou wanted to say something else when Lu Yang shushed him.

From a distance came a series of clattering sounds; the footsteps and breathing sounded heavy, signifying that the visitor was colossal in size. Judging by the frequency of the footsteps, it sounded like they had four legs or even more.

Lu Yang had no idea what kind of monster it was.

He could even see the monster’s shadow around the corner.

“Run!” Lu Yang hissed, taking to his heels with Meng Jingzhou. It was unwise to confront such an adversary without a clue about the opponent’s cultivation realm and abilities.

As the two sprinted in the opposite direction of the monster, it didn’t notice them, and they soon shook off the monster. Halting in their tracks, they quietly listened for any sounds and confirmed that there were no monsters in the vicinity. Only then did they gingerly walk along the street, eventually coming across an inn.

The inn was brightly lit, with a person in white lazily slumped over the counter and two people dressed like traveling merchants discussing which room to take.

“We’ve finally found an inn. I’m beat! Give us two Heaven-Grade Rooms.” One of the traveling merchants slapped a silver ingot on the counter.

His companion quickly stopped him. “Did you forget what the paper said? We can’t stay in Heaven-Grade Rooms!”

“You actually believe that paper?”

“Better to believe it than to dismiss it.” The companion grabbed the silver ingot and looked at the white paper, intense uneasiness settling in his heart. This town is too strange. We must leave early the next morning. He smiled apologetically to the person in white. “Please give us two Earth-Grade Rooms.”

The person in white accepted the silver without giving them the change, directly handing over three keys to them. “One group can only rent one room. Here are all the three keys for Earth-Grade Room Three.”

The traveling merchant frowned. This inn is such a rip-off. How is an Earth-Grade Room worth this much?

Lu Yang reminded the traveling merchants, “You must abide by the rules on the white paper.”

The companion of the traveling merchant recalled the rules about not easily trusting the words of strangers; unable to figure out Lu Yang’s intentions, they hurried upstairs.

Just as Meng Jingzhou was about to ask for an Earth-Grade Room, Lu Yang picked up a brush and paper from the counter, pulling Meng Jingzhou behind him. The latter immediately understood what Lu Yang was up to. Rule 15: If you have questions inside the inn, ask the innkeeper. If you have questions outside the inn, ask the apothecary owner. However, you cannot speak to them.

Lu Yang wrote on the paper: Are you the owner of this inn?

The innkeeper wrote back: Yes.

Lu Yang whipped out a silver ingot and wrote: Give us an Earth-Grade Room where no one has ever died.

The innkeeper took out three keys labeled “Earth-Grade Room Four.”

The two exchanged a glance and headed for the second floor. They noticed that there were a total of ten rooms, eight of which had black doors; only Earth-Grade Rooms Three and Four had brown doors.

Only after entering their room and sitting on the bed did they finally relax and realize that their hearts had been racing.

Lu Yang asked, “Has your family told you such things before?”

“Absolutely not! I don’t even know that a Fusion cultivator can alter reality and set rules. Those Fusion elders in my family just raise birds, tend to flowers, go fishing, and curse on the streets all the time. They don’t seem like they are this capable!”

Lu Yang agreed wholeheartedly; he also couldn’t see what was powerful about the elders of the Dao-Seeking Sect. But if someone says that Big Senior Sister has such abilities, I’ll be the first to believe it. At the very least, her impressive demeanor matches.

Light footsteps sounded, which suggested that they likely belonged to a person.

A knock came from the other side, accompanied by a gentle and servile voice, “Guests, are you asleep? The innkeeper accidentally gave you all three keys, so I can’t open the door. I have brought you freshly made dinner that is free of charge. Could you kindly open the door?”

The traveling merchants in Earth-Grade Room Three weren’t foolish; they could also sense that something was off. Abiding by the rules, they didn’t respond.

Seeing that the guests weren’t opening the door, the knocking grew louder, reverberating throughout the hallway.

“Guests, open the door! Open the door!

“I’m telling you to open the door! Do you hear me?!

“Do you think I wouldn’t bash this door down?!”

The other party dropped their pretense and banged on the door fiercely. Fortunately, the door was sturdy enough and didn’t break open.

With the merchants not falling for it, the other party shifted their tone back to a gentle one, “I’ll leave the food outside the door then.”

There was still no reply from the traveling merchants.

The other party reused the same tactic as they knocked on Lu Yang and Meng Jingzhou’s door; they started with soft knocks before gradually increasing their force, no longer concealing their true nature.

Still, no one fell for it.

Footsteps sounded as the other party left.

“Wait, the footsteps sounded too short. It doesn’t sound like they went downstairs or upstairs. They are still on the second floor!” A chill ran down Lu Yang’s spine.

He envisioned a scene in his mind. The other party braces themselves against the wall as they hide on the ceiling, waiting for the traveling merchants to let their guard down and secretly open the door to collect their food, only to swoop down and pounce toward them...

The traveling merchants shared the same sentiments as Lu Yang; they remained cautious and had no intention of opening the door.

“Let’s sleep.” Meng Jingzhou yawned, recalling the rule that demanded them to sleep before 11pm.

He pulled a quilt from the cupboard and laid it on the floor. As he blew out the candle, the room plunged into darkness, with only the dim moonlight filtering in through the paper window.

As Meng Jingzhou looked toward the window, his heart almost stopped beating.

A dark silhouette appeared outside the window, swaying side to side as if it was clinging to the window ledge and straining its neck to peer inside.

But this is the second floor. Just how tall is this thing?!

“Check if the window is latched!” Lu Yang yelled, remembering the rule which stated that windows must not be opened!

Ever since they entered the room, they had only been focused on locking the door and completely forgot about the window. We don’t even know if the window is just closed or secured!

The two acted at lightning speed. Realizing that the window was indeed not secured, they swiftly latched it before the figure outside could knock on the window.

Making out the dark human-shaped silhouette through the window, their hearts pounded wildly.

After the narrow escape, the two made it through the first night.
