[Vol. 6] Chapter 169: They Should Be Thanking Me

As Violet explored the abandoned ancient town, she continuously noted the clues she encountered, gradually forming a few theories.

The battle that led to the overnight destruction of the [Heaven-Opening Sect] likely wasn’t a swift, one-sided affair. Along the way, they found extensive damage and fissures in many areas, suggesting prolonged combat.

The number of invaders probably wasn’t very large.

It seemed the attackers had used some method to seal off the surrounding area, launching a direct assault on the [Heaven-Opening Sect]’s base. They began a rampage of slaughter and destruction almost immediately, while the defenders tried to organize resistance, retreating as they fought, possibly to buy time for evacuating others.

The destruction in the ancient town was primarily concentrated in a few severely damaged areas, while other parts remained relatively intact. If a large number of enemies had stormed in and engaged in a full-scale battle with the [Heaven-Opening Sect] disciples, the town wouldn’t have been left in its current state.

As they passed through several battle-scarred sites, Violet suddenly stopped.

“Wait. Something’s odd. How come we haven’t seen anyone else besides us? Given the commotion when this place opened, shouldn’t there be plenty of explorers here?”

“Maybe they arrived before us and went deeper in,” Xiao Kong suggested.

“That still doesn’t explain why we haven’t seen a single person. Based on the numbers, nearly a thousand people must’ve entered the [Endless Wasteland Sea] this time. Even if they scattered—”

“Whoosh!”

Before she could finish, a sharp arrow suddenly shot out from the shadows of one of the town’s buildings, speeding directly toward Violet!

“Buzz!”

A golden barrier instantly rose around her, blocking the arrow. An arrow forged entirely from metal, far beyond what an ordinary person could wield. It clattered to the ground with a metallic clang after losing its momentum.

“!”

Violet’s eyes narrowed as she scanned the direction the attack had come from, her body tensing in anticipation of further action.

While Violet defended herself, Xiao Kong reacted instantly, swinging a claw that unleashed a silver slash, slicing the tall building in half. With a thunderous crash, it collapsed to the ground.

The force of her attack was nothing short of extraordinary. So powerful that even the rain in the sky seemed to part temporarily, only resuming after the silver arc faded away.

“Whoa… Calm down, calm down, I’m fine!”

Startled by the catgirl’s sudden and explosive response, Violet quickly grabbed Xiao Kong’s wrist to stop her from delivering another blow.

Who would’ve thought? Xiao Kong, usually so quiet, turned out to be this fierce when it came to combat.

“Ahem, sorry. Something about this place just unsettles me…” Xiao Kong trailed off, realizing she had let her emotions get the better of her. She retracted her gleaming claws and, as if to cover up her embarrassment, turned to address the ruined building she had just demolished.

“Cowards who only know how to attack from the shadows, come out already!”

After a moment of silence, several figures slowly emerged from behind the wreckage.

As the figures came into view, Violet and the silver-haired girl exchanged a glance. The latter had just picked up the arrow from the ground, examining it closely. Without asking questions, Violet retrieved her weapon, silently signaling readiness for a fight.

“What’s the deal here? Trying to ambush us and take what isn’t yours?” Violet asked sharply.

“Violet… that’s not exactly what ‘take what isn’t yours’ means,” Xiao Kong muttered.

“Oh, you get the point!” Violet retorted lightly, though her focus remained unwavering.

There was no doubt now. These individuals were alive, and Violet even recognized them from the hill outside the [Endless Wasteland Sea] when they first entered.

Judging by their appearance, they didn’t belong to any formal sect. They seemed more like a disorganized group of rogue cultivators or martial artists. But regardless of their background, their earlier unprovoked attack was clear and undeniable.

“……”

The opposing group remained silent, showing no reaction to the terrifying attack that had just destroyed the building. Each held their weapons, their eerie green-glowing eyes fixed on the three women.

They were far from being in peak condition. Many bore visible wounds and bloodstains from previous battles. Though hastily treated, the injuries were clearly affecting them, making it seem illogical for them to attempt any sort of ambush in their current state.

“What’s going on here…?” Violet muttered.

“Violet, something’s off about these people,” Xiao Kong said, her voice cautious.

“Huh?”

Frowning, Violet dispelled the golden light that had begun glowing at the tip of her staff and turned to the silver-haired girl beside her.

“What do you mean?”

Dropping the heavy metal arrow she’d been examining, Hen scanned the area, her gaze searching for something invisible to the naked eye.

“This ruin… it’s crawling with bound spirits. And quite a few of them.”

“They’re possessed by vengeful spirits or something? Are you sure?”

Hen replied concisely.

“A warrior’s weapon is like an extension of their body. This special arrow carries the imprint of that person’s involvement.”

“Wait… you can tell that from an arrow? Your technique really stretches logic, don’t you?” Violet said, a mix of disbelief and amusement.

“Whoosh!”

Mid-conversation, another arrow shot toward them, but Xiao Kong, fully prepared, didn’t even bother dodging. With a simple swipe of her claw, she caught the heavy arrow mid-flight, gripping it tightly. With a sharp twist, she snapped the arrow clean in two.

“Violet, I’m getting angry. Can I leave them half-dead?”

“Why do I feel like you’re getting more violent lately… I know you’re frustrated, but hold on—hey, what the—!”

“Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!”

Before Violet could finish calming the agitated catgirl, the possessed attackers charged recklessly, throwing themselves at them with no regard for their own safety. Violet immediately swung her staff, unleashing a wave of magic-infused wind that sent several of them flying, crashing into the surrounding buildings.

Xiao Kong’s expression turned strange.

“Aren’t you more violent than me? They’re not dead, are they?”

With a dramatic scoff, Violet shook her head.

“You don’t get it. I’m a priestess. My specialty is killing people and then bringing them back to life. Not only will they survive, they’ll thank me later for patching them up.”

“Killing people is not a priestess’ specialty!” she retorted

Violet glanced around, her face turning serious.

“No wonder the place felt empty. Everyone’s gathered here.”

As they tangled with the initial few attackers, more armed individuals in various outfits began to emerge from all sides, gradually surrounding the three women.

It was obvious they were also explorers who had entered the ruin. At some point, however, they had become possessed by the so-called bound spirits. This was evident from the eerie glow in their eyes.

“So many of them…”

Seeing the growing numbers, Xiao Kong finally realized something was off.

Bound spirits, while known to appear in areas where tragic events had occurred, were typically rare due to the unique conditions required for their formation. Even then, only a small number would have the ability to possess living beings. The fact that so many capable cultivators were affected here was highly unusual.

There was something very wrong with this ruin.

And yet, despite the unnerving situation, Violet suddenly broke into a smile.

“I think I’m starting to understand. Have either of you ever heard of a game called Battle Royale?”
