Why do I have so many masters?-Chapter 633 - 244 Fufeng the Blade Madman, Probably Not a Law Student (2/2)
Today, Wanling City was destined to be extraordinary; the streets were thrown into chaos. The City Commandant stood up with the support of his sword, his face pale as iron. The sickening stench of blood lingered in the air, mingling with the sound of sniffling, and the faint smell of urine made his complexion even uglier.
Yet, he had to suppress his rage. As the foremost military officer in Great Qin's cities, the City Commandant ordered the uninjured iron troops to check on the recently wounded, secluded those who were scared half to death, and dispersed the surrounding crowd.
One thing after another came at him like a torrent, causing a throbbing pain in his forehead, lasting until his subordinates reported that although most of the iron troops who had stopped that person had been injured, they were merely flesh wounds at worst with some swelling.
Without a single case of death or even broken limbs among them, his expression finally lightened slightly.
He immediately ordered the iron troops to take their subordinates to the military medical families for treatment, granting each three days of leave. Turning around, he saw Gao Tianlu approaching. This official, usually regarded with some prestige, wore a look of pale, bewildered shock.
This wasn't feigned; the City Commandant's gaze moved over him, spotting several blood stains on his light green official attire, making him look extremely disheveled—from the blood that freshly splattered on him when that man killed Gao Zhenhai in front of him.
For a man past forty, meeting such a calamity was a severe blow. Anyone in his place would be distraught. The City Commandant's demeanor softened a bit, reassuring him with a few words. He said that today's fright was their negligence and that they would certainly seek justice for him.
Gao Tianlu managed a few distracted replies, his mind in turmoil as he left in a daze. The elegant, scholarly man who was knocked to the ground by the man in black waited until he was a distance away before approaching the City Commandant, glanced at Gao Tianlu's retreating figure, and asked in a low voice:
"What do you plan to do?"
"What to do?"
The City Commandant repeated twice, slightly annoyed, saying:
"What else can we do? Investigate, investigate thoroughly!"
"This time, even if the Wen Family stands in the way, even if that illustrious Doctor writes a letter, we must uncover the truth! I refuse to believe that if we dig deep enough, he can really cover this up!"
"Not just him, we must also find out who's been suppressing this matter."
"We'll investigate it all thoroughly!"
The scholarly man showed a hesitant expression, saying:
"The Wen Family's influence is enormous; if this matter leads to hostility with the Wen Family..."
The City Commandant scoffed:
"Yes, the Wen Family's power is something we must consider to some extent."
"But if we really let that man kill Gao Tianlu in three days and then cause a bigger scene, although he will certainly die, it won't do us any good either. No matter what, after a Jianghu person kills an official, the Ministry of Punishment will send a famous captor from the Capital City."
"Have you forgotten the affair of the captor Wuxin three years ago?"
"If it happens again, at the very least, we'll be accused of negligence!"
The Scholar was profoundly alarmed.
Three years ago, the Yi Nanping case in Fufeng—when those involved killed only local wealthy officials—led the Ministry of Punishment to dispatch the renowned captor Wuxin from the Capital City. Everywhere he went, he reviewed all local records anew, causing upheaval everywhere he investigated.
Eventually, Yi Nanping was thrown off a cliff by the captor Wuxin.
In the three years since then, whenever captors were sent out as Wuxin had been, holding the Bi'an Golden Order and bearing the responsibility to investigate, all officials in the involved regions feared them like tigers, cautious and careful.
And now, such a significant oversight had occurred under their jurisdiction. Once a captor indeed came down, they couldn't escape being charged with dereliction of duty.
Not to mention being punished and imprisoned, but their performance review would certainly fall below average; their future career prospects would be bleak, practically cutting off any path to the Capital.
The City Commandant said, "He must have realized this point; that's why he carried out such a deed, forcing us to do everything in our power for this matter."
As he spoke, a hint of annoyance crept in, and he punched the empty air, saying:
"Heh, this matter is so perfectly calculated, I even suspect he's schooled in Great Qin's Legalism—an ordinary Ranger yet so familiar with Great Qin's Legal Code and the Ministry of Punishment's operations!"
"It's almost like he's a Legalist scholar!"
The refined man could only offer a helpless, bitter smile. He himself was a disciple of the legalist school of Great Qin and knew that the City Commandant's words were merely an expression of extreme frustration after being caught in a vulnerable position.
Disciples of the Great Qin legalist school considered rangers of Jianghu to be amongst the Five Parasites. How could they stoop so low as to engage in such acts? As the two walked side by side behind the iron troops, the refined man pondered for a moment and hesitantly said,
"Nevertheless, are you so certain that he will dare to commit such an act in three days' time?"
The City Commandant replied, "If it were anyone else, I would dismiss it as mere bluster, but this man is different."
The refined man grew curious and asked, "How can you be so sure?"
The City Commandant sighed and said,
"How do you think our martial arts compare to that of a Sect Leader from one of Jianghu's sects in the region?"
The man appeared hesitant, then shook his head and said, "Inferior,"
The City Commandant asked again:
"Then, how do you think the defenses of Wanling City compare to that of a Jianghu sect in the region?"
Again, the refined man shook his head and said,
"Great Qin does not seek to rule with martial might in one location like a Jianghu sect. It focuses on offense and defense across the entire realm. If the city's iron troops were always vigilant or if the army's experts were prepared for battle day and night, they would surpass the sects. Otherwise, they are inferior."
The City Commandant sighed and said,
"Yes, but how can flesh and blood troops maintain such constant vigilance without fail? This also makes them inferior. Yet, that man was able to single-handedly defy an entire region's major sect, kill a Sixth Rank Elder under their stronghold, and leave as if to buy wine."
The refined man's pupils constricted, recalling the description from the Blade List's secondary ranking over the past five years, and his expression involuntarily changed slightly.
"He is…"
When the City Commandant thought back to their recent clash and chuckled softly, murmuring,
"You're asking about his courage?"
"At least within the Jianghu of Danyang County, there aren't many with greater courage than him. And those with greater courage may not necessarily be more arrogant than him. He is a paragon of arrogance, and his blade, a paragon of dominance."
"If he says he will come to kill, he will certainly kill."
"In this matter, I cannot afford to gamble, nor dare I."

The refined man didn't know what to say, simply heaving a helpless sigh. He felt that this situation was truly vexing. Most of the bystanders around them had witnessed the recent event, and although they could prevent others from overhearing their conversation with their martial skills, it was still not appropriate to say more.
Ahead of them, a child who seemed to be playfully running with companions accidentally tripped and fell forward, letting out an alarmed cry. The City Commandant instinctively raised his hand to help, but someone had already extended their hand to steadily catch and support the child.
The City Commandant naturally withdrew his hand, seeing that it was a young man dressed in a dark-cyan Scholar's long robe, about seventeen or eighteen years old, and carrying a Wooden Sword and a Broad Sword on his back—a man of Jianghu, or at the very least, skilled in martial arts.
With a gentle smile on his lips, he nodded towards the City Commandant, then lowered his head to ask the child if he was hurt anywhere.
They passed each other in the blink of an eye. The refined man walked a dozen steps more, then suddenly exclaimed,
"If only every person in Jianghu were so kind and helpful, where in the world would there be any disorder?"
But the City Commandant thought otherwise and said,
"If it were so, it would instead resemble stagnant water."
The refined man shook his head and agreed, but after some thought, added that the Blade Madman must have either fled after a single strike by now or might be hiding somewhere in Wanling, difficult to spot, waiting for them to make a move. The City Commandant felt the same and nodded with a frown.
Fifteen or sixteen steps behind, the man bearing Twin Swords watched the child he had saved thank him before running off to play. He strolled leisurely towards the most conspicuous and bustling inn in the city.
