A Cafe with Angels…? 1

It was a little past two in the afternoon on the second day of the tests. Sakuto was heading home alone for the first time in a while.

Club activities would resume tomorrow, but he had been busy with Newspaper Club matters after school, so he had let the Usami sisters go home ahead of him.

There were so many things he had to do and to think about. As these thoughts crowded his mind, he felt a bit overwhelmed with information and wanted some time to himself.

With that in mind, he decided to take a detour to clear his head.

‘Come to think of it, it opened recently…’

In Sakuto’s line of sight was a cafe, a newly opened establishment owned by an individual.

The name was 『Ange』—a word Sakuto remembered as meaning ‘angel’ in French.

He had been frequenting the Western-style Dining Canon lately, so trying out a different place for a change seemed like a good idea. If the atmosphere was nice, he might bring the Usami sisters here next time.

With that thought, Sakuto opened the door and entered the cafe.

The interior, with its calm atmosphere, wasn’t very crowded, perhaps because it was a weekday afternoon. The sound of relaxing BGM played as the quiet chatter of women could be heard.

‘Quite a nice place. This might be a hit.’

From the back came a high-pitched voice saying, ‘Please take any open seat〜’ so Sakuto made his way to a table in the back.

The brand-new sofas were stylish and comfortable. The menu was extensive and seemed promising.

As he thought about how the two would surely be delighted if he brought them here, he called over a waitress—

“Are you ready to order… Sakuto!?”

She exclaimed in surprise. Her high-pitched voice suddenly became muffled, and Sakuto, equally startled, looked up to see—

“What? Yuzuki!?”

To his surprise, it was his childhood friend, Kusanagi Yuzuki.

Visibly unable to hide her surprise, Yuzuki’s face turned bright red and she hid it behind an order pad.

Below her face, she wore a uniform consisting of an apron dress without a chest protector that accentuated her bust, paired with a miniskirt.

She looked cute. It hinted at the taste of the cafe’s manager or owner, but that was hardly Sakuto’s concern at the moment.

“So… you’re working part-time here?”

“Y-yeah…”

Yuzuki was flustered and seemed uncomfortable.

Apparently, she was very embarrassed to be seen in this outfit. While trying not to stare too much, Sakuto returned his gaze to the menu and quickly ordered,

“Then, I’ll have an iced coffee and a chiffon cake…”

“…U-Understood…”

The flustered Yuzuki hurried off to the back. Sakuto watched her go and let out a big sigh once she was out of sight.

‘Not a hit, this was a miss…’

“──Sorry to keep you waiting, here’s your iced coffee and chiffon cake…”

“Thank you…”

The high-pitched voice from before had disappeared, and the face and voice of Yuzuki, who came back carrying a tray, had returned to the girl Sakuto knew.

However, her expression was almost blank, or rather, she seemed somewhat displeased.

Yuzuki placed the items on the table and sat down directly opposite Sakuto for some reason.

“…”

“…”

“…What?”

“I got a break, so.”

“Oh, I see.”

Sakuto felt a headache coming on so strong that he wanted to groan out loud.

‘Why does she have to sit in front of me during her break…?’

Looking at her again, he thought the uniform was really cute. Yuzuki wearing it made it look even cuter. Even without the bias of childhood friendship, Yuzuki is a pretty girl.

Sakuto had never heard her high-pitched sales voice before, but even that was cute. He thought to himself that the number of repeat customers coming just to see her would likely increase in the future—and he mentally complimented her for that.

Nevertheless, there she was, sitting across from him while looking somewhat bored as she propped her cheek with her hand and gazed out the window even though it was her break.

“Why are you taking your break here…?”

“This is a privately-owned shop, and when I told the manager that a classmate from junior high school had come, he said I should go talk to them.”

“Oh, I see…”

It’s not like there was anything in particular to talk about.

“There are other seats available, you know?”

“Would it be a bother if I’m here?”

“Yeah, it would be very bothersome.”

“That’s mean… I’ll send LIME to Usami-san sisters that Sakuto is being cold to me…”

With that, Yuzuki started fiddling with her smartphone.

“Oh, please, by all means, do as you like …”

Sakuto figured they would either be pleased or not react at all.

Yuzuki’s hand, which had been about to send a LIME, stopped.

“…what’s with that nonchalant attitude?”

“It’s not like that. I just thought it would be a bother to others if you stayed here.”

“You never used to say things like that…”

“Well, things are different from before.”

Yuzuki looked out the window again, seemingly unamused while propping her cheek with her hand.

──Sakuto was, admittedly, a little concerned about Yuzuki.

Yuzuki had already apologized for whatever had happened, and although they attended different high schools now, she was still an important childhood friend to him.

However, they weren’t exactly in a relationship where they contacted each other regularly.

If anything, he thought their connection had completely ended after last month’s Hydrangea Festival.

Speaking of the Hydrangea Festival──it seemed that she was still close to Matsukaze Shun, who had gone on to the same Yuuki Academy.

Back then, Yuzuki was timidly trying to match Shun’s pace. Perhaps to make herself likable to him.

But with Shun not here now, Yuzuki’s attitude seemed a little more genuine.

Since there wasn’t much to talk about, Sakuto casually asked,

“By the way, how’s Matsukaze?”

Referring to the absent Shun.

“Shun-kun? …Are you concerned about him?”

“No, not at all. I was just wondering how he’s been since then.”

“Ah, I see… Well, maybe he’s just become a bit less talkative?”

“Hmm… I see.”

Sakuto smiled and took a sip of his iced coffee.

“You know, you’ve changed a bit, Sakuto.”

“…Huh? Have I?”

“You seem to have become more laid-back with women.”

“Why’s that?”

“Just a feeling… Like, I just thought you must be having a fulfilling time at your school.”

Sakuto neither confirmed nor denied but simply sensed something behind Yuzuki’s words.

“…then what’s it like at your school? I didn’t get to hear much about it last time.”

Previously, Yuzuki had said it was so-so, but now her expression clouded over.
