Chapter 845: Chapter 835 What Should Niuniu Do

Three days later, Li Hongjun returned from his mission.

"Goudan and Cui Ying are planning to get married. They came back and told me a couple of days ago, and I also told them about the house matter, to save my sister-in-law from fussing over this and that," Shen Yunfang said to Li Hongjun while she washed his clothes, updating him about the recent happenings at home.

"Alright, if they’ve decided, then let them get married," replied Li Hongjun, who had met Goudan’s fiancée and had a good impression of the girl; she seemed like someone who knew how to live a good life. It was okay for Goudan to find such a girl.

"My sister-in-law has called several times already, saying she can’t make it in the next few days and asking me to help out. She’ll come over a week before the wedding," said Shen Yunfang. Goudan and Wang Dan had discussed it and decided not to hold the wedding back in their hometown. They were busy at the farm and couldn’t leave, so they planned to have a simple wedding ceremony here.

"What about my dad?" Li Hongjun frowned.

With Goudan getting married here, Wang Dan and his wife would definitely come, but then who would look after the paralyzed old Mr. Li at home?

"My sister-in-law said she’d discuss it with my older sister, and have her and her husband come over for a few days during that time," Shen Yunfang explained.

Li Hongjun felt relieved upon hearing that there would be someone to take care of his father.

"Oh right, also, your sister called again saying that Sun Chengbin is seeing someone else outside and wants to divorce her," Shen Yunfang recalled the matter of her sister-in-law.

Li Hongjun frowned again, "What are they up to now?"

"I don’t know," replied Shen Yunfang bluntly—it was not something ordinary people could guess. "I told her you were out on a mission and would be back in a couple of days, today or maybe tomorrow night. She will definitely call, so you can ask her yourself."

True to Shen Yunfang’s expectations, the phone rang after dinner.

"Hurry up, it’s probably your sister-in-law or your sister," Shen Yunfang said from the kitchen, calling out to Li Hongjun in the bedroom.

Li Hongjun came out of the room, sat on the sofa, and picked up the phone, "Hello, yes..."

Hearing her second brother’s voice on the other end, Li Xianghe couldn’t hold back her tears any longer, "Second brother, you’re finally back. I can’t go on living, Sun Chengbin, that Chen Shimei, wants to divorce me."

Li Hongjun frowned, instinctively pulling the receiver away from his ear. He knew his sister well enough to expect that this crying wouldn’t end soon.

He held the phone until he heard the crying subside slightly on the other end, then spoke, "Tell me clearly what exactly happened. Just mentioning ’Chen Shimei’ doesn’t explain anything."

Sniffling and wiping her nose, Li Xianghe managed to control her crying and recounted the sequence of events.

It wasn’t really anything major; a woman from a visiting troupe had taken a liking to Sun Chengbin. Moreover, she was a deputy division commander’s daughter. Seeing that the woman could help his career, Sun Chengbin couldn’t resist and began an affair with her.

The matter hadn’t significantly escalated when, under someone else’s influence, Li Xianghe brought the issue to light. Sun Chengbin, infuriated, proposed divorce, deciding to seek higher connections.

Li Hongjun listened silently until she had finished and asked only one question, "If you two divorce, what about Niuniu? Who will she stay with?" Regardless of the adults, divorce was always most harmful to the child.

Niuniu had been abnormal since childhood, and though Li Hongjun didn’t think much of his sister, he genuinely cared for his little niece.

The question made Li Xianghe stutter over the phone, struggling to respond.

Sensing something amiss, Li Hongjun pressed on, "I’m asking you, with you and Sun Chengbin getting a divorce, did Sun Chengbin mention what will happen to Niuniu?"

Li Hongjun pressed for an answer a couple of times, but Li Xianghe still couldn’t give a clear response.

"Li Xianghe, you’d better tell me the truth, or don’t expect me to help you with this," Li Hongjun threatened.

From the kitchen, Shen Yunfang found it strange to hear Li Hongjun yelling into the phone and washed her hands before sitting on the sofa to listen.

Seeing his wife come over, Li Hongjun switched to speakerphone.

Li Xianghe, desperate upon hearing her brother wanted to wash his hands of the matter, had tried every trick in the book. Sun Chengbin was determined to divorce her. After slaving away for the Sun Family for so many years and now she was aging, he was saying he couldn’t continue living with her—it was absurd.

"Niuniu... Niuniu is missing," Li Xianghe finally blurted the truth.

"What? What exactly happened? Explain everything to me quickly," Li Hongjun was taken aback as he hadn’t expected such an answer, but he quickly regained his composure and demanded in an authoritative tone.

"It wasn’t intentional," Li Xianghe quickly said, then explained how the child had gone missing.

A month earlier, Li Xianghe had taken Niuniu to a market in the village below. She was distracted by a vendor and wasn’t paying attention to the child. By the time she remembered, Niuniu was nowhere to be found.

This was the reason Sun Chengbin wanted a divorce.

Hearing about the missing child, Shen Yunfang’s heart clenched. A divorce was a minor issue, but a missing child was a major one.

"Did you call the police, and what did they say? Are there no clues at all? Did you check the nearby villages, perhaps someone found her and took her home?" Shen Yunfang urgently asked.

There was a pause on the other end, "I’m speaking to my brother, outsiders should not interrupt."

Shen Yunfang felt a surge of anger and helplessly fell back, exasperated with such people.

She suddenly stood up, pointing at Li Hongjun with her hand repeatedly, directing all her pent-up frustration toward Li Xianghe onto him.

It was her fault for poking her nose into other people’s business with that anxious inquiry.

Having realized this, Shen Yunfang calmed down, straightened her clothes, and decidedly turned back to the kitchen to continue tidying up.

As for the child Niuniu, if something truly bad had happened, it was her fate. She must not have done good deeds in her past life; thus, she was born into such a family—perhaps, it was for the best.

Thinking about Niuniu possibly having had her fate sealed, Shen Yunfang’s mood became somber again.

Li Hongjun watched his wife return to the kitchen and then turned back to the phone with a cold expression.

"Sister, did you hear that? Don’t let outsiders hear our conversations, this is the Li Family’s matter," Li Xianghe, still unaware that her words had severely offended her brother’s family, continued rambling.

"You’re wrong there, if we’re talking about outsiders, you’re the one. You now belong to the Sun Family, I shouldn’t interfere too much in your affairs. Let’s leave it at that and try not to call too often," Li Hongjun said coldly before hanging up.

Li Hongjun quickly went into the kitchen and seeing his wife still washing dishes, he hugged her from behind.

"Hey, what are you doing?" Shen Yunfang heard his footsteps but didn’t expect him to suddenly do that.

"I missed you," said Li Hongjun, showing his shameless side when no one else was around. Having been away on a mission for nearly a month, he really missed his wife.
