Working as a police officer in Mexico-Chapter 1772 - 787: Every Dog Has Its Path, Every Cat Has Its Way
Capítulo 1772: Chapter 787: Every Dog Has Its Path, Every Cat Has Its Way
“There are some minor troubles, but they can be resolved.” Bramo dodged the topic, “How about you? You haven’t looked well lately.”
There was a few seconds of silence on the other end of the phone. “Caesar… is coming back to stay for a few days next week. His mother said she wants him to spend more time with Bruto and Maria, to cultivate a brotherly bond.”
“Does Victor know?”
“He said the child’s matters are for me to handle.”
Handle it herself? How to handle it? Strictly disciplining Caesar would be seen as being intolerant of her husband’s illegitimate child, while ignoring the situation would allow Bruto and Maria to be bullied. Reporting to Victor would make her appear incompetent as the mistress of the house.
“Do you need me to do anything?” Bramo asked directly.
“No, focus on your own affairs.” Belsaria took a deep breath, “I just wanted to hear your voice. In this family, there aren’t many people I can fully trust.”
Bramo felt a pang of discomfort in his heart.
“Belsaria,” he said solemnly, “you are legitimate! Remember this, you’ve given Victor two children, you don’t have to do anything, just sit tight, don’t worry about the rest, sometimes doing nothing is better than moving.”
On the other end, there was a faint sound of inhalation, as if his sister was suppressing emotions, “I’m… I’m scared.”
“Don’t say silly things, scared of what! Your status is different now, don’t overthink it, just have a good sleep.”
The other side responded quietly, “You should rest early too, brother.”
After hanging up, Bramo stood silently in the office for a long time.
Outside the window, the lights of Mexico City stretched to the horizon, under the bustling surface, dark currents surged.
In the United Kingdom, London, at the temporary headquarters of MI6.
Since the assassination of Sir Charles Walton, MI6 headquarters had strengthened security, but core personnel had already been dispersed to several secret locations for work.
Cunning rabbits have three burrows!
At this moment, on the third basement level of a nondescript office building on the south bank of the Thames River, an emergency meeting was underway.
There were only four attendees: Malcolm Graham, the acting director of MI6, a former head of the Middle East Department, clearly in a bad mood. A surprise considering the circumstances… he was sent up to take the blame.
The MI5 deputy director for counterterrorism affairs; the senior advisor of the Foreign Ministry’s North America Department; and a man in civilian clothes but sitting upright, with shoulder insignia indicating a rank of Major General.
“Mexicans killed seven of our people on the Illinois border.” Graham tossed a stack of photos onto the table, “The ‘Traveler’ group was wiped out, and we didn’t even retrieve the bodies.”
The photos showed scenes of the border conflict, though blurred, the bodies covered with white sheets and the armored vehicles of the Mexican Army could be identified in the background.
“The mission of the ‘Traveler’ group was to incite refugees to rush the border, create chaos, and assassinate Ludwig Becker at an opportune time,” the Major General frowned, “but they were exposed in advance, there was a third party involved on the scene, those attackers disguised as refugees were not ours.” 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
“It’s the ‘Phoenix Society’.”
The Foreign Ministry advisor adjusted his glasses, “We received intelligence that the Austro-Hungarian Empire legacy organization ‘Phoenix Society’ has been very active in North America recently. They want to restore the glory of the Habsburg dynasty, believing the turmoil in North America is a heaven-sent opportunity. The massacre in Stone Bridge Town bore their mark, they funded local resistance organizations, providing weapons to create more humanitarian disasters in hopes of sparking international intervention, where they could then intervene as ‘Order Restorers.'”
“A bunch of madmen.” The MI5 deputy director spat, “But how did they know our operational plan?”
Graham scanned the room sharply, “That’s the crux of the issue. The whereabouts of the ‘Traveler’ group was top secret, known to very few, yet the ‘Phoenix Society’ not only knew but sent people to execute a similar but more aggressive mission at the same time and place—directly attacking the Mexican Army. The result is, our plan was disturbed, and seven excellent agents died in vain.”
The room fell into a brief silence. An atmosphere of suspicion began to spread.
“Could it be a self-directed act by the Mexicans?” The Major General suggested, “They discovered the ‘Traveler’ group, then deliberately lured the ‘Phoenix Society’ in, killing two birds with one stone?”
“Unlikely.”
Graham shook his head, “The methods of the ‘Phoenix Society’ were very professional, using Eastern European weapons, intentionally leaving the double-headed eagle insignia. If the Mexicans had such skills, they should have discovered and dismantled our entire network in Belize by now.”
He paused, tapping his fingers on the table, “We’ve intercepted some communication fragments within the Mexican government, Victor has been very active in the tech field lately.”
“Is he trying to spearhead a technological leap?” The Foreign Ministry advisor raised an eyebrow, “With Mexico’s industrial base?”
“That’s why he needs more external technological input.”
Graham: “We’ve received intelligence that Mexico is secretly recruiting computer experts, electronic engineers, and materials scientists globally, offering sky-high prices. Also, he’s not just after talent, but also equipment—high-performance computers, precision machine tools, semiconductor manufacturing equipment—all of which are on international embargo lists, but he’s already acquired some through third-country transshipment.”
The MI5 deputy director’s face turned grim, “If Mexico breaks through in information technology, it will be harder for us to monitor and contain them in the future; if they dominate cyberspace…”
“Therefore, it must be stopped.”
Graham stated firmly, “Continue creating chaos in North America, draw Mexico’s resources and attention away. Although the ‘Phoenix Society’ is a group of madmen, they can be utilized. Provide them some ‘convenience,’ let them stir up more trouble on the Illinois border.”
