World Awakening: The Legendary Player-Chapter 109: Princess
Chapter 109: Princess
When they got back to the Great Root, the air was heavy and quiet, and Elder Fena was waiting for them just as she said she would be.
Mela stood beside her, looking serious, but they weren’t the only ones there because the mercenary, Lola, was on her knees, her hands tied behind her back with thick, thorny vines.
"What’s she doing here?" Nox asked, his eyes narrowing as he took in the scene.
’She looks like crap.’
Lola looked up, and a tired, bitter smirk crossed her face when she saw him. "Look what the cat dragged in. Come back to finish the job, whelp?"
"My daughter captured her trying to sneak through our woods," Fena said, her voice flat and cold. "She was hunting you."
Serian moved a little closer to Nox, her hand resting on the hilt of her sword. ’That woman is dangerous. Why is she still alive?’
Mela looked at Lola with a flash of anger, then her gaze shifted to Nox, her expression unreadable. ’I hope he doesn’t think we’re weak just because she ambushed us.’
"She said you killed her sister," Mela said quietly.
Nox just stared at her. "I don’t even know who her sister is."
"My sister was Leila," she spat, her voice full of venom as she struggled against the vines. "She went after the princess, and now she’s dead. Don’t play dumb with me, I know it was you."
He just stared, completely lost.
’Leila? Who the hell is that? Is this woman crazy?’
"I don’t know who you’re talking about, I haven’t killed anyone named Leila."
Lola struggled against the vines, her entire body tense with desperation. "Liar! My sister! Black hair, a katana, with a smaller girl with pink hair! They went after the princess for my contract, and because you were with her, you killed them!"
When Lola described the two mercenaries, Serian went completely still.
’Black hair... a katana... the girl with pink hair who could turn to smoke... Leila and Rura.’
She remembered the alley and the fight. she remembered the golden light filling her as she killed them.
’I killed her. I killed Lola’s sister.’
The guilt was immediate and absolute, making her feel sick.
Nox saw her face go pale, and he looked from her to Lola as he tried to figure it out. "I wasn’t even there, I left her in the city to find my friends, so there’s no way I could have killed them."
"Then it was her!" Lola screamed, her eyes locking on Serian. "The princess! She did it! She killed my sister!"
Fena stepped forward, her gaze moving to Serian’s guilty face. "Sun Elf, is this true?"
Serian’s mouth was dry, and the words were hard to find. ’I can’t lie about this, not after what she said, but if I tell the truth, Lola will hunt me forever.’ She gave a small, almost invisible nod.
The clearing was silent.
Lola’s rage disappeared, replaced by a raw, broken confirmation. "You... you murdered her."
’Serian killed someone? When?’ Nox was totally lost and turned to her. "What happened?"
"There was a fight in an alley after you left," she finally said, her voice quiet. "They attacked me, so I had to defend myself."
"DEFEND YOURSELF?!" Lola’s grief exploded into a heartbroken scream. "MY SISTER WAS DOING A JOB! A CONTRACT! YOU MURDERED HER!"
’This is a huge, stupid mess,’ Nox thought, looking at the crying mercenary and the guilty princess. He had a legendary mission and he was stuck here dealing with this.
He stepped between them. "Enough, crying won’t bring her back."
"Shut your mouth!" Lola screamed, tears on her face. "This is because of you! If you weren’t with her, my sister would still be alive!"
"I am sorry," Serian said, her voice full of remorse. "I did not wish to kill them, but they gave me no choice."
Lola laughed, a bitter, broken sound. "Sorry? You think ’sorry’ fixes this?" Her tear-filled eyes locked onto Serian with a new vow. "I’m going to kill you, princess, I swear it on my sister’s soul, I will end you."
Nox eyes went blank and walked over to her.
"Such a threat, I can not just stand here and let it slide."
When his anger took over, he moved across the clearing and grabbed Lola by the throat with his gauntleted hand.
"Nox, don’t!"
He ignored Serian’s yell, lifting Lola off the ground while his fingers tightened around her neck.
’They always need someone to blame, someone to hate, and it’s always someone other than them.’
Lola clawed at his wrist, her face turning red as she choked.
"You want to blame her for your sister?" his voice was a low growl. "Fine. But you’ll do it from your grave."
"I told you to stop, human."
He didn’t listen to Fena, his thumb just pressed harder on Lola’s throat.
A thick, black root erupted from the earth and coiled around his arm, its grip so tight the metal of his gauntlet creaked under the pressure.
"I will not say it again."
He finally looked at the Elder, his eyes glowing with dark energy. "She’s a threat. She tried to kill me, and she tried to kidnap Serian. She needs to die."
Fena shook her head. "She is a tool. Her life has value beyond your anger."
’A tool? What is she talking about?’
"After some harsh convincing, we found out she works for Gorok." She looked at him, expecting a reaction, "though it seems you already know that."
’Duh.’
"She also mentioned something about the sun elf being a princess, what is that about?"
The root around his arm squeezed, the thorns digging into the metal of his gauntlet, but he just stared back at her, his eyes glowing.
’This is getting more annoying by the second.’
"How the hell would I know, I am from this world, not from where ever you all came from."
Fena’s attention turned to Serian who just watched in silence, "care to say anything? Are you truly of royal blood? Are you from Lifewoods?"
Serian was not sure what to do, she knew lying would just makes things worse but can she handle what comes next if she tells the truth? She looked at Nox and the look on his face, telling her, he got her back.
’yeah,’ she smiled, ’’I have him.’
"Yes, that is correct. The the one and only heir of Lifewoods. Princess Serian Feselian."
