Chapter 63: Chapter 63 Manga Version

In 1995, on the first Sunday morning of July.

In a small town in Tennessee, United States,

a high school student named Leonard had just gotten out of bed.

He put on the thick glasses that signaled his "nerd" identity, then freshened up.

What to do on the weekend holiday?

Yesterday, his "goddess" invited many classmates to go on a picnic in the outskirts today.

Perhaps too shy to face him, she actually forgot to invite him.

Should he make a surprise appearance and give his "goddess" a shock?

Leonard thought for a moment, then made a decision.

Better not to go, for it’s only the things we lose that seem valuable.

Today, let his "goddess" feel a bit of loss.

Tomorrow, when they meet again at school, the "goddess" would surely be nicer to him...

So, head to the sports field and join a physical activity?

Leonard was initially stunned, then shook his head vigorously to cast out that crazy thought.

Forget it, just like always, he’d go browse the comic book store.

Today, the deluxe edition of "Batman Forever" would be released.

Speaking of which, Nicole Kidman and Drew Barrymore’s outfits in the film version of "Batman Forever" were really quite tempting, huh.

After finishing breakfast, Leonard took his allowance and arrived outside the comic book store.

To his surprise, he found three huge posters hanging outside the store.

Besides the familiar "Batman" and "X-Men" series, there was a new comic series called "Arcane Throne."

On closer inspection, the poster featured a Caucasian boy with thick glasses.

This look immediately grabbed most of his attention.

Looking even more closely, the names of various scientific theories floated vaguely behind the boy.

And by the boy’s side were the words "Science Boy."

Leonard chuckled.

As nicknames went, that was pretty lame. fɾeeweɓnѳveɭ.com

But...

Thinking about how he himself got bullied at school for being called "Science Boy" just because he was only good at studying and bad at everything else.

This...

It felt too relatable!

Leonard walked into the comic book store and found it was mostly familiar faces.

In this small town with a scant population, there was only one comic book store.

And those who loved comics pretty much knew each other.

Of course, maybe it was also because they shared a common plight.

After all, they were all called bookworms by others.

Leonard first headed straight for "Batman Forever," wanting to make a purchase.

Because, as shown on the poster outside the store, buying this comic came with a large photo of one of the female characters.

But when he was ready to check out, he realized that the supposed female character was completely different from what he expected.

Not only was it not a real-life version, it was just in comic style.

Most importantly, it didn’t resemble Nicole Kidman in the slightest.

"Boss, this poster doesn’t look anything like the movie’s female lead," he said.

"Nonsense, if they looked alike I’d have to pay the stars their likeness fees. This deluxe edition is only selling for 8 US dollars!" the comic store owner replied, not too pleasantly.

Leonard looked at the photo he was given, hesitated, then put "Batman Forever" back on the shelf.

He had already read this single-issue comic.

Who would spend an extra 4 US dollars for a deluxe version if not for the photo?

"Hey, Leonard, aren’t you buying it?" a familiar friend asked from behind.

"No, I’m not. I have this issue," Leonard answered. "I don’t want to waste money."

"But this is the deluxe edition!" the friend said, puzzled.

Without further explanation, Leonard just shook his head and then started rifling through the comics on the shelf.

Suddenly, he thought of the bespectacled boy on the poster outside the store.

"Boss, where’s the comic book of ’Science Boy’?" Leonard asked.

"It’s on the shelf behind you."

He turned around, went to the back, and picked up the sample comic displayed outside.

A moment later...

Damn...

I can do that?

Scientific knowledge is power?

Then, couldn’t I beat the football team members who bully me to death?

Leonard suddenly felt that the idea of wanting to be bitten by a spider after reading "Spiderman" was so silly...

He himself was full of power!

He picked up the comic and sat down on the floor to read it seriously.

Soon, someone came to inquire, "Which comic are you planning to buy?"

"This one!" Leonard said excitedly, "It’s really good!"

The visitor looked at "Arcane Throne" in Leonard’s hands and then at the "X-Men" in their own.

"I’ll stick with ’X-Men.’ Yours is a new comic."

Leonard shrugged his shoulders and didn’t try to persuade further.

Both of them went to the counter to check out.

"Your two US Dollars, your one US Dollar," the boss handed out the change to each of them.

"That one of his is so thick, mine is so thin; are you sure you didn’t give the wrong change?" Leonard’s companion asked.

The boss pulled out the price list and pointed to it for both to see, "Look, ’Arcane Throne’ 3 US Dollars, ’X-Men’ 4 US Dollars!"

"Yours is so cheap?" The person exclaimed in surprise, looking at Leonard.

Leonard shook his head innocently, indicating he didn’t understand either.

"Is it really good?" they pressed him.

This time, Leonard started nodding frantically, "Really good!"

The person put "X-Men" on the counter and picked up a copy of "Arcane Throne."

"Then I’ll buy this one too." He shook his head and said, "You don’t realize until you compare; it feels like being conned."

The people lined up behind them heard this and lowered their heads to look at the comics in their hands.

A moment later, a tall stack of comics piled up on the counter, and "Arcane Throne" in the comic book store was almost sold out.

The comic book store owner called the distributor, "That new series is selling well; I want to order another 100 copies."

"What, you’re out of stock? Then you better figure something out!"

Meanwhile, Leonard had already returned home and finished the first edition of "Arcane Throne."

But "Arcane Throne" was clearly a long story, unlike other comics that had one story per volume.

This made Leonard very uncomfortable.

What’s next?

What’s next in the comic?

He opened up the computer and searched for "Arcane Throne," intending to find like-minded people to complain about the interrupted comic story.

But after searching, he found out that "Arcane Throne" was actually a novel.

And it was being serialized on a site called wangwen.com.

Leonard didn’t think twice and clicked into the website.

Then he found "Arcane Throne" and continued reading.

Until half an hour later...

Damn it, you have to pay?

But I’m not even eighteen yet, I don’t have a credit card!

What’s next?

What power did the protagonist gain through scientific knowledge?

I’m going to lose my mind!

Just as he was scratching his head in frustration, the front door of his home suddenly rang.

Leonard’s eyes lit up and he shouted to the person entering, "Dad, advance me next week’s allowance, the kind paid with a credit card."
