Outside the main gate, the commotion caused by the near-death centipede gradually died down. The colossal body of the centipede had already ceased to struggle, with only its weighty legs intermittently trembling. The magical beasts, who were thrown into a chaos by the death throes of the centipede, had finally regrouped at the entrance once more. A silver-rank mouse, taking advantage of its smaller size, wriggled its way through the gate first. Of course, calling it small is relative to other magical beasts; in reality, even lying flat on the ground, it would be taller than a human’s calf.
As soon as the mouse squeezed its way through the gate, before it could even let out an excited squeak, a pale white foot appeared within its visual field like a streak of lightning. Before the whistle of the foot’s swing could reach its ears, the foot had already kicked it squarely in the body.
With a dull ’thud’, instead of being flung soaring through the air, the mouse was promptly blown up where it stood. Under the intense force, the silver-ranked flesh of the mouse was as frail as a balloon, promptly exploding into a clump of blood and minced meats, with no trace of its original form identifiable.
After smashing the mouse into oblivion with her blood-stained left foot, as though encountering no obstructions at all, Lina stomped onto the ground, increasing her speed while soaring high into the sky, right knee bent and jutting out in front of her. She initiated the attack against the magical beasts swarm at the gate with a mid-air knee strike.
The narrow entrance was jammed with two magical beasts trying to snake their way in. Under the force of Lina’s knee strike, they were simultaneously launched into the air, freeing up the space at the doorway for Lina to successfully land.
The difference was noticeable now. Previously, when Lina and Pannis defended at the gate, they stationed themselves inside, only having to protect against the two or three magical beasts within a few meters’ radius in the front. Now, although Lina was still guarding the gate, she was standing outside where, apart from her back, enemies could approach her from all directions. The pressure on her increased significantly.
However, the greater the pressure, the more intoxicated Lina seemed to be. Her entire body trembled with excitement, and from her mouth emitted eerie chuckles.
"Ah, a berserker, a berserker. What a peculiar protagonist for a book," Pannis remarked, not standing behind Lina to assist with attacks like before, but rather watching from a safe distance. This was because he fully understood the key element of fighting alongside a Berserker.
In the adventure teams on the Yarran Continent, they value cooperation during combat, there are different ways of cooperating for different occupations. One could infer a person’s combat experience from their cooperative tactics. As for dealing with a Berserker, it was universally acknowledged across Yarra that there was only one way to coordinate, that is to stay as far away as possible, until the enemy falls, or until the Berserker falls. There were no other methods. This is because once a Berserker starts fighting, they were famously known for not distinguishing between friend or foe. Unlike berserk warriors, who become indiscriminate due to fury and loss of rationality, a Berserker’s inability to distinguish is coldly calculated and rational. In their mind, no matter how things were like in peacetime, anyone stepping into the battlefield is fair game, it doesn’t matter if you’re an enemy, a friend, or a relative. On the battlefield, there are only two types of people, oneself and the opponent.
So, Pannis could only sensibly stay as far away as possible, leisurely watching Lina’s solo performance.
And the performance was fantastic. Straight punches, stomps, elbow strikes, knee thrusts, shoulder charges, headbutts. For a time, Lina seemed to have transformed into a weapon herself, no, countless weapons. Each part of her body could serve as a lethal instrument, delivering fatal blows to her enemies.
As for the giant wolf that tried to attack her from the side? There was no need to dodge. As their forms crossed paths, she simply threw a punch from top to bottom and landed it on the wolf’s head. The force pushed the wolf’s head straight onto the ground, causing a slight dent in the hard, metal floor. The devastating blow caused the wolf’s cranial fluids and blood to spray out from its mouth and nose, splattering Lina’s face with shades of red and white.
And the butterfly that swooped down from above for an attack? No need to dodge. Again, as they crossed paths, she simply heaved in a deep breath and coiled in her abdomen. Avoiding the edge of the butterfly’s wings, she managed to catch the pair of wings from behind. Ignoring her hands being cut and smeared with fresh blood from the edges of the wings, she exerted force suddenly, tearing off the butterfly’s wings. The butterfly, now wingless, plummeted to the ground like an oversized worm. Lina then trod on it, smearing her whole body with its body fluid that exploded on rupture.
"Ha ha ha ha ha." Clutching a monkey, a creature with the capacity to become invisible and razor-sharp metallic claws, she exerted force with both hands, disregarding the monkey scratching her delicate skin, leaving deep marks all over. Lina ripped off the monkey’s head along with part of its spine. Raising the decapitated head, she looked up and burst into laughter. The monkey’s blood cascaded over her face like a waterfall. She gleefully swallowed mouthfuls, even as her crazed laughter and brutal actions incited deep fear among the hungered magical beasts, causing them to slow their attacks temporarily.
"Tsk, tsk, tsk." Pannis held his forehead while watching Lina act wildly from afar, mumbling in a low voice in helpless agony, "I think when Lina regains control of her body and learns of her actions, perhaps she will completely lose her mind. Ah, to have such a ’friend’, how pitiful."
Red blood, white brain tissue, and green insect fluid intermingled on Lina’s body and face. She stretched her lips into a pleasurable smile, once again licking her bloodstained lips and took a deep breath to savor the pungent smell of blood.
"Again, continue." Lina roared, lunged forward and seized the nearest fox, grabbed it by one of its hind legs, and slammed it fiercely onto the ground. The unfortunate fox yelped as with each thud of its body meeting the ground, its howls crescendo and then gradually die down, finally losing its voice, only the sound of the body thudding against the ground remained, even that morphing into squelching sounds at the end due to the fox turning into a bag of meat.
At last, the Bat Tiger, the most powerful magical creature here, could no longer contain its rage, it catapulted into the sky from behind the horde, spread its wings, and glided straight for the main gate from above.
Seeing the Bat Tiger, Lina’s eyes shone brightly, her fists clenched, creaking, and a heavy breath resounded from her nose, her maniacal smile growing ever wider.
The distance kept shortening, the Bat Tiger paused in air, then suddenly accelerated downward. Its body was upright, forepaws in the front, hind paws trailing behind, diagonally swooping at Lina standing on the ground.
Lina didn’t retreat, or rather, the Bloody Lady, being a Berserker, didn’t retreat. Instead, she moved sideways, rushed forward, dodging the Bat Tiger’s front paws and crashed into its embrace, paying no heed to its back paw that left scratch marks deep enough to expose the bone on the outside of her right leg. It was as if she felt no pain at all, not even furrowing her brow.
After crashing into the Bat Tiger’s embrace, Lina unleashed an unprecedented vicious attack. Starting from an unanticipated low kick, Lina appeared to be glued to the Bat Tiger, her relentless attacks hitting rapidly on the Bat Tiger’s soft belly, causing it to jerk continuously, unable to escape the range of Lina’s attack.
"Thump, thump, thump." The drum-like beating sound kept going. The mighty Bat Tiger, under Lina’s close-ranged assault, had appeared to become like a child, with no chance to counter-attack. Due to the continuous blows to its abdomen, it couldn’t even howl in pain.
"Hahaha," amid her attacks, Lina couldn’t stop herself from laughing pleasantly, dealing her last elbow strike with a laugh.
After the cease-fire, Lina didn’t stop. Ignoring the Bat Tiger which was slumping over her, she took hold of its waist, hoisted the beast weighing hundreds of kilograms, her waist forced out a circular movement, using the Bat Tiger’s own weight to swing it. Having turned 180 degrees, she scattered away a few magical beasts around her, and finished off with a neck-breaking slam.
The nearly breathless Bat Tiger’s misfortune continued. After the neck-breaking slam, Lina let go of the Bat Tiger’s waist. Her hands pressed on both sides of the bat tiger’s head, she hoisted the tiger up to her own height, showed a bizarre grin exposing her pearly teeth, bit into the throat of the bat tiger with a laugh. The Bat Tiger’s thick fur couldn’t stop Lina’s teeth, she tore open its fur, bit through its windpipe, and swallowed mouthfuls of the scorching hot blood from the bat tiger’s throat.
The magical beasts surrounding Lina could only watch from afar under her astonishing might, not even daring to initiate an attack.
"Piss, too weak." Lina said, spitting out a mouthful of blood and meat pieces, she snorted disdainfully, without even bothering to stay alert, she turned around and headed towards the gate, while yelling, "My time is up, change of guard, I’m going to sleep. The rest is up to you, hope you’re still alive when I wake up, oh no, I hope I get a chance to wake up."
"Don’t worry, I promise you won’t die." Pannis responded with a nod, blocking the gate again, looking amusingly at the magical beasts outside who were cowering.
"By the way, something seems off about these magical beasts." Lina moved back to the control room and sat on the ground leaning against a metal platform. She said to Pannis, "Each of them seems to have some odd new ability. The Bat Tiger can subtly control gravity, the monkey can become invisible, the fox has an aura of weakness. It’s very strange. Moreover, if these were ordinary magical beasts, after twenty-one deaths, they would have run away. But these ones not only didn’t run but have had the guts to besiege us so quickly, which is very unusual."
"Yes, I noticed. These magical beasts seem to have been tampered with by the goblins, bioengineered, hmm, I think that’s what the goblins call this technology." Pannis explained, rubbing his head aching from the revelation, "And, you wanted to scare them away?"
"Of course, I am not Denia’s priest." Lina scoffed coldly. "Lina is a fool, I am not. I don’t give a damn about the people above. Unfortunately, these magical beasts seem hell-bent on killing us. You better watch out for yourself."
"Rest easy." Pannis smiled and reassured her, "Leave everything to me."
"Pssh, reliable little man," Lina made a scoffing noise, not protesting his words. Her eyes slowly closed, her voice getting deeper and deeper. "I don’t think I’ll get a chance to come out again this time. Sigh, why is everyone afraid of me? I want friends and companions too, otherwise, there’s nobody to duel with me. It’s really boring." Her speaking voice grew fainter and fainter, becoming silent eventually.
Pannis shrugged, noncommital. Looking at the magical beasts outside that had once again gathered their courage to surround them, he muttered to himself, "Just half of them are left. This mission is quite difficult for a Silver Rank level."
The next moment, from the control room behind him, suddenly erupted a horrifying scream from Lina.
