Young Noble Be Monster Slaying-Chapter 878: Fried Chu Liang
Chapter 878: Fried Chu Liang
A gust of wind swept across the battlefield for a while.
The ruins of the Celestial Northern Prison, the destroyed valley, and the panic-stricken capital of Yu all sank into a long silence.
The reborn Demon God departed with the demon kings in tow, followed by Daoist Cangsheng. No one dared to stop them. Even without a vessel, the Demon God’s life essence had been terrifying. Now that it had taken Tuntun as its vessel, there was no doubt it had become even more formidable. After all, Tuntun might look strange for a Heaven-Devouring Bug, but a strange Heaven-Devouring Bug was still a Heaven-Devouring Bug.
The pessimists were already thinking about the past calamity that the Demon God had brought on during his reign. However, this time, the mortal world did not have the Demon-Suppressing Pagoda. Without it, restraining the Demon God would be a very difficult feat for the immortal sects and their legendary artifacts. That much was clear from the battle that had occurred earlier.
Chu Liang, however, remained fairly optimistic. He could sense that Tuntun was the Demon God, and the Demon God was Tuntun. Ultimately, that meant Tuntun was still Tuntun.
He believed she wouldn’t cause another calamity like the original Demon God. As someone who loved eating fried food, how could she possibly want to destroy the world?
It was likely that she had fled because there had been too many human cultivators present. The chaotic mix of auras had probably made her feel anxious, whereas she was more familiar and comfortable with the auras of the demons.
Nevertheless, Chu Liang chose not to reveal all that, since there were so many people around. He planned to first return to Mount Shu and discuss the matter with Venerable Wen Yuan and Baize before deciding what to do. The current situation remained uncertain, and he was already under suspicion of colluding with the demons of the Far West. It was best not to say anything in public that might provoke further controversy.
Of course, most of the people there already believed the Demon God’s resurrection was a done deal, but the more discerning individuals would find it odd. If reviving the Demon God were truly so easy, why had the demons of the Far West initially tried to kill Tuntun instead of letting the Demon God’s life essence possess her straight away?
It didn’t really matter in terms of the battle because it hadn’t prevented the Demon God from falling into the trap that the immortal sects had set within the Celestial Cosmic Ring, but... there had to be a reason why the demons from the Far West had done all that.
Regardless, the grand battle had finally come to an end.
Recently, the world of immortality cultivators had been rocked by successive, large-scale battles—the war between the Mount Shu Sect and the Penglai Supreme Sect, followed by the war against the Demon God in the Celestial Northern Prison. Each conflict was more intense than the last, resulting in the deaths of top-tier eighth-realm beings like the Noble Dharma and Moth.
Even the highest ranks of the Divine Nine and the Terrestrial Ten found themselves at a loss in the face of such turmoil.
In the end, it was the Imperial Supervisory Commissioner who stepped up to take charge of the situation. He called out, “Members of the Divine Nine and the Terrestrial Ten, please do not leave yet. Follow me to the capital of Yu so we can discuss our next course of action. What happened today carries great consequences, and I request that none of you disclose anything to the public just yet.”
If news of the Demon God’s resurrection were to spread, it could incite widespread panic and unrest among the people of the nine provinces. Before that happened, the imperial court and the immortal sects needed to agree on an official stance.
The Eminent Ones who had wielded legendary artifacts against the Demon God remained silent, their faces clouded with worry.
Just then, shattered rock clattered to the ground as a middle-aged man emerged from the rubble of the prison. His tattered clothes and disheveled hair made him look like a caveman.
“What happened?” he asked in confusion. “What’s going on? Why has the Celestial Northern Prison collapsed? Are we going to rebuild it?”
“Old Zuo...” the Guardian Ruler sighed and shook his head. “We might not need the Celestial Northern Prison anymore.”
The caveman-like middle-aged man was Deputy Commissioner Zuo Ci of the Imperial Supervisory Bureau. He had spent many years cultivating the Great Dao of Resilient Defense at the Celestial Northern Prison and never once imagined a day when the entire prison would collapse. It was no wonder he looked so bewildered.
The Celestial Northern Prison had suffered devastating damage. While the buildings could be rebuilt, it would not be easy to bring in new convicts to replace the many convicts who had perished. Without convicts to imprison, perhaps the prison would no longer be necessary, and that was reason for the Guardian Ruler’s sorrow.
After thinking for a moment, the Guardian Ruler suddenly looked up in confusion. “That greater demon who broke into the prison at the beginning—he wasn’t from the Far West. Who was he?!”
...
“Oh, Divine One!”
In the temple deep within the Far West, the statue of the Demon God on the altar had been removed and replaced with a bronze throne.
A slender teenage girl leaned back against the wide, ice-cold throne. Unable to find a comfortable position, she let her legs dangle over the side, awkwardly swinging them back and forth.
Several demon kings were kneeling before the throne.
At the very front of the group, the Great High Priest prostrated himself and gestured to the several massive spirit beasts on the side. He said, “You have just returned to life. These are offerings from your faithful followers. Oh, Divine Demon God, please eat and enjoy.”
The spirit beasts were tightly bound, each one larger than the throne itself. One of them was covered in green scales, and the rest had long, spear-like fur. All of them struggled fiercely, but it was in vain.
These were seventh-realm spirit beasts. After all, creatures of a lower cultivation level wouldn’t be worthy to grace a god’s table. Once the Demon God consumed them, her spiritual qi would quickly be replenished, then the demons of the Far West would be ready to rise again in full force.
Now that the Demon-Suppressing Pagoda no longer existed, nothing could stand in their way!
However, the Demon God didn’t seem the least bit interested in the spirit beasts. She gave them a cautious glance and asked softly, “Are they fried?”
“Uh...” the Great High Priest uttered. He paused awkwardly before replying, “They are... alive.”
Three thousand years ago, offerings to the Demon God had to be living beings. The demons of the Far West had always followed that rule.
It was understandable that the Demon God’s tastes might have changed after such a long time, but the Great High Priest hadn’t expected the change to be this drastic... Clearly, the Great High Priest was having trouble adjusting to the latest version of the Demon God.
“Hmm...” Tuntun frowned and shifted her gaze elsewhere.
She had never eaten anything that was still alive. Perhaps in her infancy, she had once craved spiritual qi, but after years of being nurtured by Chu Liang, Tuntun’s tastes had long since changed.
“The Divine Demon God doesn’t like it,” Caiyi whispered. “Bring something else.”
“Understood!” The Great High Priest waved his hand. “Take these spirit beasts away and fry them in hot oil! Then present them again as offerings!”
Howls and roars erupted from the bound spirit beasts, and they thrashed about even more violently. You old scoundrel! Not only did you capture us to be killed, but you want to kill us in the cruelest way possible?!
Tuntun furrowed her brows even more deeply.
She didn’t fully understand what they were trying to do, but she could sense that it was something cruel.
She didn’t like it.
With a wave of her hand, golden light flashed, and the special restrictive ropes binding the spirit beasts snapped in an instant. The spirit beasts sprang to their feet and fled in a panic, bounding away for their lives.
Since it was the Demon God who had released those spirit beasts, none of the demon kings dared to stop them.
After freeing the spirit beasts, Tuntun didn’t seem inclined to do anything else. She curled up on the wide throne, hugging her knees to her chest. Her eyes spun around and around...
Was she thinking about something? The demons had no idea.
Tuntun said nothing, and the demon kings and the Great High Priest did not dare to speak either.
The temple plunged into a deep silence that stifled even the demons.
After a moment, it was the Great High Priest who broke the deadlock. He prostrated himself before Tuntun once again and respectfully said, “Our Great God, whatever offering you desire to eat, your faithful followers will stop at nothing to find it for you!”
The Demon God was the embodiment of the Great Dao of Devouring; it was her very nature to be a glutton. So, it was utterly unprecedented for her to have no appetite at all. Naturally, that made the Great High Priest deeply anxious.
“I want...” Tuntun uttered, thinking for a moment. Then she whispered, “Chu Liang.”
“Oh Divine One, you want Chu Liang?” the Great High Priest replied solemnly. “I, your follower, understand!”
Behind him, Caiyi looked totally speechless for a second. Then she asked, “Understand what, exactly?”
The Great High Priest sprang to his feet and declared resolutely, “No matter what it takes, we shall fry Chu Liang and present him to the Divine Demon God as an offering!”
