Chapter 227: Are you sure you’re a demon?

"I’ve been holding myself back from progressing; even till now, I’m still an adolescent myself." The zombie kings had no idea what their lord was muttering about, yet none dared to interrupt him.

"Perhaps... this is a way to kill two birds with one stone. Rather than wasting precious corpses to be added to my army..." A strange chill emanated from Su Ping’s eyes that caused all the small hybrids he gazed at to begin crying out in fear, as if they’d sensed something greatly ominous.

"My lord, do you want our assistance?" asked a zombie king.

Su Ping was silent, his eyes staring at all the feeble creatures before him crying out in fear even though none of them could talk. The already warped hybrids could do nothing but watch, yet one could notice a hint of sadness in the eyes of some.

The more Su Ping looked, the more his cold gaze slowly softened into one of calm. Eventually, he let out a breath.

He turned around and began walking from whence he came.

"Forget what I just said. Do as I originally commanded and take care of them until they’re of age," was the final thing he said.

"As you wish, Master." The zombie kings said nothing else, only expressing their agreement.

---

Before officially leaving, Su Ping called one of the zombie kings over for a discussion.

"I need you and the others to adhere to another request of mine."

"Please state your orders, my liege. No matter what it is, we’ll be sure to complete it to the best of our abilities."

"Good, I like the enthusiasm." Su Ping chuckled, patting the other on his shoulder, his eyes filled with satisfaction.

"Every day, I want you ten to select a handful of minions to go about and terrorize the area—although I don’t mean for you to directly target the cities."

"But the settlements around it? In other words, you want us to strike fear and paranoia within their hearts?"

"Exactly," Su Ping said with a light smile. There was nothing better than an obedient lackey who understood your intentions easily.

"But, my liege, if I may ask, why don’t we simply attack these human cities and conquer them all? I don’t mean to go against you, my liege, but I believe we have at least ample forces to lay waste to several cities," said the zombie king. He was aware of the fact that cities would contain figures at Level 3, just like himself and the other zombie kings. But unlike humans, as a zombie king, the easiest way for them to defeat an opponent of equal level was to simply tire them out by having them constantly face off against its horde. Once their prey had been reduced to a pitiful state, then they could strike the finishing blow.

It was believed amongst members of the zombie undead species that such a fighting style was practically superb and unbeatable, which was why they always chose to use such tactics when fighting their enemies.

Though cheap and cowardly, it still stood that their tactic had a high chance of success each time, almost being completely foolproof.

Although, in instances where they went against an enemy who was talented in AOE attacks, that is. Or one who possessed something that those on the same level didn’t, like abnormal stamina, a strange physique, or durability above what one would usually have.

"And then what?" The zombie king didn’t understand why its liege suddenly questioned its idea.

"Pardon, my liege?" it asked, sounding very much confused.

"After laying waste to some cities, what do you think will happen?" Su Ping wasn’t irritated by the zombie king’s suggestion; to be honest, he was amused, since he’d already thought of the same idea long ago. Alas, that was not the reason for him to build this undead army. To him, they were merely a backup plan.

"You see, what you fail to understand is that these humans might look weak and feeble, but make no mistake, they’re far trickier to deal with," he said with a bemused smile.

"If we begin to forcefully take over their land, we might have a good run at first, sure."

"And, the more land we take, the more corpses of our enemies we could add to our own forces."

"Exactly!"

"But..." Su Ping halted his subordinate’s excitement with a raised finger.

"You don’t expect our current forces to be enough for us to take over this entire kingdom in one swoop, do you?"

"One swoop?!" replied the zombie king. Of course he didn’t; a kingdom wasn’t something that could be easily toppled over like that.

"Not to forget that other forces, like the neighboring kingdom, might take our temporary weakness after the battle to lay waste to us, robbing us of our hard-earned victory."

"That... my liege, you have a valid point," the zombie king expressed helplessly.

"I’m glad we’re on the same page," a light chuckle escaped the would-be dragon king. "Moreover, if we began laying siege to city after city, I assure you it wouldn’t be long before these humans realize what sort of threat we pose and begin to band together."

"A nation at war is far more united than you’d expect, given the right circumstances, of course," said Su Ping, who couldn’t help remembering some of his past national history where such an incident occurred.

Specifically during the Second Sino-Japanese War, from 1937 to 1945, where rival Nationalists known as the Kuomintang and Communists, despite intense internal conflict, formed the United Front to unite against Japanese aggression, halting the civil war to focus on the common foreign enemy, demonstrating a nation banding together despite deep divisions.

"Once they do that, we won’t be able to deal with them anymore; on the contrary, we might as well be killed by them. Which is something I’m not willing to have happen." Su Ping let out a light breath to express his stance on the matter.

"For now, we’ll use a different approach. You and the others will be a form of distraction, to keep the eyes of these humans away from the rest of us, while we secretly infiltrate them from the inside, silently devouring everything they own."
