World Evolution Apocalypse: I Possess The Extraction Ability
Chapter 66: Midnight Raid (1)
Leon didn’t answer her question. Instead, he walked towards the door and stopped beside her. Raising his head, he stared at the moon high up in the sky.
"Isn’t the moon a beautiful celestial body?"
Selene blinked, taking a moment to glance at the moon. Then, she frowned, "That was not what I asked you, though."
"The same question is applicable to you, Selene," He said, crossing his arms behind him.
She fell silent, then turned to him. "I said I have some questions for you."
"Go on," He said.
"How do you know so much about the apocalypse? You were the first to discover Tier One beings, and you seem to always know a lot more than we the others. What do you know, that you’re hiding from us?"
Her voice was clear and calm, but Leon could sense another emotion beneath her words. It was as if she was disturbed by her own ignorance.
Pinning that fact, he took control of the conversation.
"You’re feeling uncomfortable, aren’t you?"
Her expression stiffened briefly. It was almost imperceptible, but Leon’s sharp eyes didn’t miss it.
Without waiting for her reply, he continued, "Your lack of information makes you feel vulnerable. Am I right? No, that shouldn’t be the question."
He slowly turned to her, their faces meters apart.
"The question is... do you accept that you’re ignorant?"
Selene’s expression didn’t change, but he saw her eyes tremble faintly. She was trying hard to maintain her expression and not slip up.
Chuckling faintly, Leon turned away, "I don’t need you to answer, Selene. I already know, and you know too. Ignorance isn’t bliss at all."
Cracking his knuckles, he said to her. "Don’t worry, though. I’ll always share important information with you when it’s needed."
After saying that, he stepped out of the hotel and moved onto the streets.
To his surprise, Selene followed him, her steps calm and measured.
"Are you a regressor?"
Her question caught him off guard, and he couldn’t help but glance back with an eyebrow raised.
For a moment, Selene didn’t look like the cold, dominant woman he had always known. Instead, she looked like a child who was genuinely curious.
Sighing, he shook his head and answered her, "I wish I was a regressor. Then I wouldn’t be worrying this much."
The two of them continued walking down the streets, watching as zombies came out of the nearby buildings and moved towards them.
"What level are you now?" He asked, raising his hand.
The shadows cast by the buildings under the moonlight squirmed and twisted before solidifying into spikes that shot toward the zombies.
Most of them were killed, flooding Leon with a load of notifications. As for the others, they were injured so much that they couldn’t move.
Selene observed this calmly, her blue eyes taking note of how his ability was similar to hers. After a moment of consideration, she answered him.
"I’m at Level 23."
Leon felt a bit of surprise as she answered him. Usually, people would hide their level from each other, as the trust hadn’t solidified yet. However, she had actually told him her level, which surprised him. This made him question what could have influenced her decision.
Keeping his thoughts to himself, he hummed, "That’s good. When you reach Level 24, let me know. There are a few details you need to know."
Instantly, Selene’s interest was piqued. She walked closer to him and asked, "Why don’t you tell me now?"
Leon shrugged, "You don’t need it yet. When you do, I’ll let you know."
She studied his expression for a moment, then nodded reluctantly.
Walking on Leon’s other side, Thyra smirked. "Oh dear, are you copying Big Sister’s words now? Hm, my Little Leon is so adorable."
She playfully poked his cheek, but he didn’t react, as it would be weird if Selene saw him swatting at the air and cursing.
’This woman will be the death of me.’
"What about you?" Selene asked, "What level are you?"
Leon’s pace slowed slightly, and he considered lying. However, after a moment of thought, he said, "Level 25."
Selene’s expression showed faint surprise, "You’re Tier One already...?"
Leon shook his head, momentarily pausing and staring into a dark alley. A pair of green eyes opened in the darkness. However, that was not what caught his attention. Instead, it was the yellow crystal gleaming between its brows.
Selene also saw it and immediately tensed, "It’s a Tier One Evolved beast."
Grabbing the hilt of his sword, Leon pulled the weapon out of its sheath while Selene raised her hands in preparation. She glanced at Leon’s battle-ready state and asked.
"You came here because you wanted to kill this thing, right?"
Their surroundings had changed a lot, and she realized they had gotten so close to the Manhattan Center.
Without hesitation, Leon nodded, "You’re right. I need more experience killing Tier One Evolved beasts."
She said nothing more. Instead, she prepared herself for the battle ahead of them.
From the alley, the creature with glowing green eyes stepped out, revealing itself to be a gigantic wolf with silver-black fur that glinted under the moonlight.
Sharp bony spikes protruded from its back, and it towered above them. The beast gazed at them with disdain in its eyes, then raised its head and howled.
ARRWWWOOOOOOO-!
The howl shook the surrounding buildings, even forcing the humans back by a step.
"Oh? This strong?" Thyra mused as she flew right above them, watching the entertaining show below her.
Shifting her gaze to Leon, she wondered. ’This is the first time he’ll be fighting a full-fledged Tier One Evolved beast. Although I don’t think he’ll win, he has grown stronger and has this girl by his side to fight now. Perhaps, if they work together perfectly, they can have a chance...’
Facing the wolf that was almost twice as tall as them, Leon felt his muscles tighten, and his expression turned serene.
He took one last glance at Selene, then dashed at the black-furred beast.
