He Proposed to His First Love, So I Married His Archenemy
Chapter 152: Throwing Money at People
Yvonne Sutton had just entered the house when she heard Daisy Shaw’s shouting. Looking out the window, she saw the mother and son facing off on opposite sides of a stone table in the courtyard.
"You were definitely faking being drunk last night! You even followed us!"
"I didn’t follow you. I’d been drinking, so I couldn’t drive."
"Then how did you know we came here? And show up right on our heels?"
"Last night, while you were drinking, I installed a tracking app on your phone."
Hearing this, Daisy Shaw grew even more furious.
"You little brat! How dare you set me up!"
"You can set me up, but I can’t set you up?"
Daisy Shaw looked guilty and stammered, unable to come up with a response.
When Yvonne Sutton came out, Daisy Shaw pulled her aside.
"That Megan Hughes is so petty. She’s refusing to join this variety show because of me. If she doesn’t join, what’s the point of me even being on it? So, I need you two to go to her house and get her. Use any means necessary, but you have to bring her back." 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎
Yvonne Sutton took a step back. "Couldn’t he just go by himself?"
"If it involves murder and arson, I’m your man," Wyatt Shaw said with a dry chuckle.
Daisy Shaw shot him a glare, then turned to Yvonne Sutton. "Yvonne, I’m begging you."
Yvonne Sutton sighed. Resigned, she had no choice but to go with Wyatt Shaw to Veridia.
The show was about to start filming, so time was tight. The two of them packed a few things and set off. Wyatt Shaw was driving. Yvonne Sutton had intended to sit in the back, but Wyatt pulled her into the front passenger seat.
"I’ve been driving for four hours already, and I’m getting a little sleepy. You need to keep me entertained."
Yvonne Sutton raised an eyebrow. "And how am I supposed to do that?"
"You can use your imagination." He shot her a suggestive glance.
"No, thank you."
"You’re clearly letting your mind wander."
"No, I’m not."
Wyatt Shaw let out a low chuckle. "You don’t have to do anything. Just sitting here is enough. If I get tired or sleepy, one look at you is all it takes to wake me up again."
Yvonne Sutton pouted. "For the sake of my own safety, I’d rather you watch the road, not me."
The two of them chatted the whole way, finally arriving in Veridia just as dusk fell.
This friend of Daisy Shaw’s was actually a former classmate from film school. She had also been an actress, but she retired from the industry after getting married and hadn’t acted since.
Yvonne Sutton looked her up on her phone and discovered she had starred in a classic TV series that was quite famous back in the day. Later, she was embroiled in a bullying scandal, her popularity plummeted, and she subsequently got married and retired.
The car stopped outside a rather impressive-looking residential complex. The two of them entered through a side gate, walked to Building One, and took the elevator to the sixteenth floor.
Arriving outside Megan Hughes’s apartment, Wyatt Shaw rang the doorbell.
A woman soon opened the door. She looked to be in her fifties, tall and slender with a head of curly hair. Despite her age, her skin was smooth and radiant, a clear sign she took great care of it.
She sized the two of them up and asked, "Who are you looking for?"
Yvonne Sutton asked politely, "You must be Megan Hughes, Teacher Hughes?"
"I am. And you are?"
"I’m Daisy Shaw’s manager. My last name is—"
Before Yvonne Sutton could finish, Megan Hughes’s expression turned icy, and she slammed the door shut. SLAM.
Yvonne Sutton pressed her lips together and turned to look at Wyatt Shaw.
Wyatt Shaw raised an eyebrow at her. "Just watch."
With that, he knocked forcefully on the door. When no one answered, he knocked again. He did this five or six times before Megan Hughes finally reopened the door.
"I’ve already made myself perfectly clear to the production team. I..."
Before she could finish, Wyatt Shaw cut in, "I’m Daisy Shaw’s son."
"I don’t want to hear her name from anyone!" Megan Hughes snapped.
She tried to shut the door again, but Wyatt Shaw blocked it with his hand.
"The show has discussed compensation with you, Teacher Hughes, correct?"
"Do you think I’m short on that little bit of money...?"
"It’s true, that amount isn’t much. So I’ll give you an extra one hundred million."
Megan Hughes’s eyes widened, her anger practically radiating off her.
Seeing this, Yvonne Sutton quickly tugged on Wyatt Shaw’s sleeve. This approach was incredibly rude; it would only infuriate Megan Hughes further.
"I... will not participate."
"Two hundred million," Wyatt Shaw said, his tone unhurried.
"Don’t think you can humiliate people just because the Rhodes Family has money! I absolutely refuse to participate!"
"Three hundred million."
"You—!"
Wyatt Shaw narrowed his eyes. "I’ll give you one minute to consider, Teacher Hughes. If you so much as shake your head, we will leave immediately, and I guarantee no one will ever bother you again."
With a grim expression, Megan Hughes slammed the door shut again. BANG.
Yvonne Sutton couldn’t resist kicking Wyatt Shaw. "You’re just going to ruin everything!"
Wyatt Shaw, however, was unconcerned. He even glanced down at his watch.
"Her time is almost up."
"If I were Teacher Hughes, I’d have dumped a bucket of slop on you."
Wyatt Shaw tilted his head and smiled at Yvonne Sutton. "Anyone else, no. But you can."
Yvonne Sutton snorted. "It’s not like I have a grudge against you."
The words had barely left her mouth when the door opened again. Megan Hughes stood in the doorway, her expression grim.
"Three hundred million?"
Wyatt Shaw glanced at his watch again. "You have ten seconds."
"I’ll do it!" Megan Hughes said hurriedly.
Wyatt Shaw nodded. "Then please pack your things, Teacher Hughes. We’ll be waiting for you outside the complex."
Megan Hughes’s mouth moved, but no words came out. She then closed the door again.
"Let’s go wait for her outside," Wyatt Shaw said, pulling Yvonne Sutton away.
Yvonne Sutton looked incredulous. "How... how did she just agree like that?"
"I imagine it’s because that three hundred million is exactly what she needs to pay off her husband’s debts."
Yvonne Sutton frowned. "You investigated her?"
"It’s called coming prepared for battle."
"But I still feel like this method is a bit humiliating."
"You could also see it as us helping her out."
Yvonne Sutton thought of Claire Lawrence. ’Right. How could this not be considered helping?’
There was a shop selling astronomical telescopes outside the complex. Wyatt Shaw pulled her over to pick one out, explaining that the night sky in the mountains was incredibly clear, and they’d be able to see stars that were normally invisible.
After they put the telescope in the trunk, they saw Megan Hughes emerge, pulling a suitcase. Yvonne Sutton ran a few steps toward her, but before she could speak, Megan Hughes thrust the suitcase at her.
"I don’t have an assistant. You’ll have to provide one for me."
"Of course. Please feel free to make any requests, Teacher Hughes."
Seeing Yvonne Sutton’s pleasant attitude, Megan Hughes finally got into the car, albeit reluctantly.
Wyatt Shaw took the suitcase and put it in the back, and then they got into the car as well.
In the car, Yvonne Sutton cautiously glanced back. She saw Megan Hughes leaning against the seat with an eye mask on, seemingly asleep.
"Older people tend to run out of energy. They get sleepy easily," Wyatt Shaw commented.
"I’m not even fifty! How am I old?!" Megan Hughes snapped, yanking off her eye mask.
Wyatt Shaw glanced at her in the rearview mirror. "I remember you’re the same age as my mom. She’s fifty, so you must be fifty as well, right?"
"I’m three months younger than her. I don’t turn fifty until next month."
The corner of Wyatt Shaw’s mouth twitched into a smirk. "So you’re forty-nine years and eleven months old?"
Yvonne Sutton quickly stifled a laugh. ’Wyatt Shaw’s words are just too cutting.’
