Chapter 24: Already Caught Up

Aegon thought about leaving the Abyss, this mysterious and chaotic place, back to the real world.

His main goal of going back wasn’t just to leave this place, but to check if any word had been heard about his sister.

He had thought of using the return stone, but remembered he still has people here and couldn’t leave them.

Although he had no reason why he couldn’t leave, he still considered the fact that he was in Nyra’s party and he owed them for bringing him into the Abyss.

If not for them bringing him into the Abyss, he wouldn’t have known this much about his abilities and the system.

Hell, he wouldn’t even have gotten the return stone as well. So it was only sensible for him to think of them.

"I wonder how they are doing now. Have they found the Pedestal Crystal?"

Aegon looked above to the image but was shocked at what he saw.

The holographic image that used to display the time they had, was now glitching in different colors.

It was as if it had been affected by a virus and was in a bad state.

"What’s going on?" Aegon wondered. "If it can’t display anything, how would I know how much time I have?"

The thing was that there was no virus that had affected the holographic image. The cause of its current state was because of the collision of the celestial bodies.

’Did my skill do that?’

Aegon had the thought in his heart, but didn’t want to believe it, after all, this place was made by a supreme being.

The thing was, it wasn’t only the holographic image that was affected.

The ability [Colossal Gate] had destroyed a portion of the seven rings and were now impossible to move.

"I didn’t do too much damage, did I?"

"I should quickly catch up with the others.

"_-_"

"What did you just say?" Sinon asked, looking at Chrome.

Chrome was in a daze, as he stared at the Crystal with no feeling whatsoever.

The majority of the Farmers were all murmuring amongst themselves; talking about the cause of the earthquake they felt easier.

At this moment, the entire five groups had already gathered together in front of the Pedestal Crystal, and were certain the earthquake didn’t come from any of them.

Knowing this, they couldn’t think of anyone else than the person Nyra had called.

Aegon.

Wasn’t that the guy we left behind?

Yeah, the F-rank talent?

Is he still alive?

Was that blast from him?

What is going on?

They couldn’t understand what was going on, or how to even describe it to make sense in their brains.

Nyra was in a daze, her goal of gathering all the Farmers had already succeeded for their plan of pouring mana into the Crystal.

Chrome, who was at the foremost of the Crystal, had his hand on his chin, he was deep in his thoughts as to how to operate the Pedestal Crystal.

’It would have been a lot easier. But with that earthquake, some patterns on the crystal have shifted and are now complicated."

The thing was that, after the shockwave, when Nyra was about to begin to pour their mana into the Crystal, Chrome had said something disturbing.

’This is not going to work any longer. We are stuck here.’ he said

The reason being, before the shockwave, the crystal needed roughly an estimate of two hundred people’s mana to operate but now had skyrocketed into ten times that.

No one knew for sure if they were ever going to leave this place. Knowing this, they had looked up to see how long they had left but it was impossible because the image was now glitching.

"Are we going to die here?" A random Farmer exclaimed in fear.

Upon hearing this, Nyra turned towards Chrome and asked the same question.

"Are we?"

Chrome’s brow furrowed as the words left his lips.

"We have two options now. One, since the pattern of the crystal had changed, we have to take it back to how it was, but who can operate this thing?"

"I mean we don’t even know what kind of technology was used to build it. To me, this is the worst option."

"The second option is to pour a lot of mana into it, and when I say a lot of mana, I mean from over ten thousand Farmers, but we aren’t even 5% of that."

"The only way in which we can come close to succeeding is by draining all the mana in our body."

"And by the time we have used it all, our lives would be lost. And if, if it worked, who would be able to move to the next round?"

"No one, we could all die here."

Mana was a critical point in the life of those who could perceive it. It had become part of them, and evolved into being part of their soul.

If the mana in a person was completely drained and dry, it was the same as the person’s soul being dead.

They were two sides of the same coin as one couldn’t possibly function without the other.

"So, are you saying we should just wait here and die?" Sinon asked, her tone carrying with it, frustration and anger.

"Hey, it isn’t as if I have the power to just make everything happen you know!" Chrome uttered, his tone cold as he spoke back to Sinon.

The area was already getting tense as no one knew what was going to happen from here on.

It wasn’t as if they didn’t have options, they did. But each one was as difficult as the other.

What is the point of using all their mana if they couldn’t live to enjoy the fruit?

And who among them could operate an object that was probably made by a supreme being?

The question hung in the heart of every Farmer and even though they were currently feeling a sense of rage, they couldn’t blind themselves from the truth.

They were cooked.

At this moment, Sinon spoke some words back to Chrome, and he gave her his own words. They began exchanging words that were unkind, all out of frustration and fear.

Nyra who was still in a daze, listened to their babbling, the words they exchanged against themselves wasn’t even classified as unkind, more like childish.

Their sounds and the murmuring of the other Farmers were all she could hear and was unable to think straight.

Nyra had thought she would have found a solution to their current problem by now, but who was she but a mere human?

Just then, her ear picked up on a different sound, one that wasn’t the words of Chrome and Sinon, nor the other Farmers.

It was something different, something familiar.

"Hold on!"

Nyra yelled, prompting them all to shut their mouths.

Sinon turned to her and asked.

"What is it..."

And Nyra responded, simply saying.

"Listen..."

They all began to listen quietly and curiously, as the sound was familiar and for every breath time it began closer.

Just then, they recognized the sound. It was the footsteps of someone walking in the snow.

Knowing this, every Farmer was alerted, standing ready to fight, as they thought in their hearts a monster had found them.

However, they all thought wrong as at that moment, a lone figure completely covered in blood and bruises emerged from the mist.

All eyes widened as they saw the person before them, but couldn’t utter a single word.

They had imagined him dead, but he wasn’t, but he had already caught up to them.

It was Aegon.
