’Who the heck was the maid who came here to offer room service before?’

Ai could not help but question, but unfortunately, she had no answer. She decided to close the door and deny the current room service as well.

Once Cane was awake, she decided to inform him about what she had experienced as well, and Cane made a surprised face as well.

"We had... someone pretending to be housekeeping to get in our room? Did someone know we are staying here and decide to come after us to steal something?"

That was the only thing that made sense to Cane. He was the only one with a +20 weapon on him (except Joseph), and he was easy to deal with because of his relatively low level.

Perhaps, the other person who came after him wanted to kill him and get his weapon? That was a real possibility.

"Hmm, somehow, that did not seem to be the case this time? I cannot explain it, but the reason for that fake housekeeping maid to be here felt more... personal."

Ai told Cane her own experience. She was not sure whether what she had felt was right or not, but her words made Cane frown and think over what happened once more.

Another possibility sprouted in his mind about what this could have been about, but he quickly shook his head as soon as that possibility entered his mind.

’No way-! There is no way this could be a fan’s doing, right? I might be getting a little bit ahead of myself here.’

Cane told himself, but as much as he denied this possibility, he could not shake off the feeling that he might be right.

Whatever the reason was, what he did know was that someone tried to break into his room and do something with him.

"Don’t worry. We can report the person who tried to break into our room. The police will handle the rest of this case... hopefully."

Cane told Ai, and after taking a recording tape from the inn, they quickly registered their case.

After that was done, it was time to start the chain quest again. He had made progress already, getting 3/5. But he needed 2 more before he could form a guild. And he knew how to get that next number.

"Ai, are you doing something today?"

Cane asked her, and Ai tilted her head to give him a confused look.

"I am not doing much. Why? Do you need me for something?"

She asked, and Cane just smiled at her. That smile of his made Ai a little nervous, and she could not help but take a step back.

"Cane, what are you planning? Why don’t you stay back a little bit? I do not have a good feeling about this..."

Ai told Cane, but Cane just kept looking at her with the same unnerving smile. Ultimately, she sighed and decided to give up and hear Cane out.

Cane’s smile widened even more once he noticed that Ai had given up.

"Don’t worry, Ai. Our next mission is simple. You just... need to act out a little and become a villain for some time."

Cane told her, and Ai gasped in regret before she gave up. There was no longer any point in thinking about it. She had already agreed to her own demise.

"Alright. What do I need to do?"

Cane’s smile widened a lot more, and Ai suddenly had a thought.

’I guess it’s worth following him if I get to see him smile like this. I just hope I do not regret following Cane.’

"Don’t worry, Ai. I do not want you to do something tough... just something that might go against your morals."

Cane promised with a smile on his face. Inside, he wondered whether NPCs even had morals or was it something they were programmed with? Ai had made it clear that she did not like what he had asked of her. And yet, she had not come out and said anything about it either.

She had decided to follow his will for now.

So he quickly told Ai the plan, and it was simple. She was going to attack some people of different species disguised as a monster, and Cane would save them all. That way, they would feel grateful for his help.

Was it scummy? Well, of course.

But who cared? It was not like he was putting these people in actual danger, and he would not get to meet them again in the future either, right?

"Alright, let’s get started."

Cane told Ai as he led her to the first spot where a small delegation was to enter the city. They had guards, but the guards looked weak.

Ai cast a spell that formed an illusion of a monster attacking them. The monster lunged for the group, causing them to be caught off guard.

But right before they could defend themselves, Cane appeared and saved them.

The delegation looked at him wide-eyed, wondering who he was and thankful for being saved as well.

Cane put his sword down and turned to look at them all.

"Are you alright? You were not hurt by the monster, right?"

He asked, and the mages that were in the middle of their casting lowered their staff. Their green skin clearly indicated that they were a different species.

"Of course we are fine. But it’s all thanks to you. We did not know what would happen had you not helped us out. Thus, you are our saviour. Is there anything we can help you with?"

The people asked, and Cane quickly shook his head.

"No, it’s fine. Actually, my companion shot the monster with magic, and it allowed me to easily kill him. You should thank my partner more than anything else."

Cane told them, and the people looked even more grateful to have him.

"Oh my-! You are humble and strong. Truly the greatest combination. We are lucky to have run into you here."
