80s Marriage Swap: My Should-Be-Dead Husband Lives On-Chapter 172: New Clothes
Chen Jinlan felt a sigh of relief when she saw Song Jiajia appear safely.
"Let’s go home quickly, I’ll start cooking, you must be hungry." Chen Jinlan didn’t ask where Song Jiajia had been.
As long as she wasn’t doing something foolish.
Song Jiajia held Chen Jinlan’s hand: "Mom, we’re not eating at home today."
Chen Jinlan looked at Song Jiajia puzzled: "Not eating at home, where are we eating?"
Song Jiajia smiled: "Mom, we’re going to a restaurant."
Chen Jinlan looked at Song Jiajia with a bit of embarrassment: "Jiajia, I know the food at home isn’t good, but you know we don’t have much money now. Wait a bit, when I finish making this batch of boxes, I’ll take you out to eat, okay?"
Listening to Chen Jinlan coax her like a child, Song Jiajia felt a bit bitter.
She held back her tears, not letting them fall: "Mom, it’s okay, I have money, I’ll treat you."
Saying this, Song Jiajia pulled Chen Jinlan along to leave.
Chen Jinlan didn’t react in time and was dragged away by Song Jiajia.
"Jiajia, wait, where did you get the money?" Chen Jinlan asked.
Song Jiajia simply continued pulling Chen Jinlan forward: "Mom, don’t worry about it for now, let’s eat first, and we’ll talk afterward."
Chen Jinlan didn’t ask further, just looked at Song Jiajia with concern.
Song Jiajia took Chen Jinlan to the restaurant and ordered three dishes and a soup, two meat and two vegetable dishes.
"Mom, come on, let’s eat." Song Jiajia pushed the dishes towards Chen Jinlan.
Song Jiajia had stayed with Chen Jinlan for several days and realized that Chen Jinlan had lost a lot of weight, even her cheekbones were visible.
One could imagine how hard it had been for Chen Jinlan during this time.
While staying at home these days, Chen Jinlan had probably given Song Jiajia the best things in the house.
Chen Jinlan looked at the braised pork in front of her and couldn’t help but swallow.
She didn’t know how long it had been since she last ate meat.
But she didn’t immediately start eating; instead, she looked at Song Jiajia: "Jiajia, be honest with mom, where did you get the money?"
If she didn’t say, Chen Jinlan didn’t dare to eat.
Song Jiajia lied: "I ran into an old friend today when I went out. She had borrowed money from me before. I happened to meet her, so I asked her to pay me back."
Chen Jinlan wasn’t sure about this, but she still asked uncertainly: "Really?"
Song Jiajia feigned light-heartedness: "Of course, it’s true, mom, eat quickly, it’ll be cold and won’t taste good."
Song Jiajia urged Chen Jinlan.
Seeing no guilty expression on Song Jiajia’s face, Chen Jinlan believed her temporarily and started eating heartily.
Watching Chen Jinlan wolf down the food, Song Jiajia felt uneasy inside.
How could the old Chen Jinlan be like this over a small portion of braised pork?
This was all caused by her own willfulness back then.
Song Jiajia held back her tears.
She lowered her head and began to eat.
Half an hour later, Chen Jinlan finished the last bite contently.
This was the best meal she’d had in over half a year.
"Are you full? Would you like to add a bit more?" Song Jiajia asked.
Chen Jinlan waved her hand: "No need, I’m very full. Are you done eating?"
Song Jiajia nodded: "Yes, I’m done."
Chen Jinlan looked at the leftovers, hesitating on whether to pack them up.
She never packed leftovers before, but now she started considering it.
Seeing Chen Jinlan’s hesitant look, Song Jiajia called the restaurant waiter to pack up all the leftovers.
Chen Jinlan looked at Song Jiajia in surprise; after all, Song Jiajia always cared more about appearances than she did.
Song Jiajia just smiled and said nothing.
After packing the leftovers, Song Jiajia and Chen Jinlan left the restaurant.
"Mom, I still have some money here, let’s go buy you a few sets of clothes."
The clothes Chen Jinlan wore were very old, with several patches sewn on.
Chen Jinlan quickly said: "No, no need to spend that money, these clothes can still be worn. You should use the remaining money to buy whatever you want."
Song Jiajia: "Okay, then come with me, if you don’t buy, I will."
Chen Jinlan didn’t refuse this: "Alright."
Song Jiajia took Chen Jinlan to the shopping market to pick out clothes.
She chose ones in darker colors so they wouldn’t show wear easily.
"Jiajia, these colors are too dark, they don’t suit you." Chen Jinlan said.
Song Jiajia: "I just like these colors."
Song Jiajia picked three sets, all in dark blue.
Chen Jinlan found it strange because Song Jiajia used to like bright-colored clothes and preferred dresses, but today she bought all dark blue outfits.
Afterwards, Song Jiajia took Chen Jinlan to the friendship store and bought some rice, flour, oil, snacks, and sponge cakes.
Upon seeing this, Chen Jinlan tried to stop her: "Jiajia, we still have these things at home, there’s no need to buy so much."
Song Jiajia feigned petulance: "Mom, don’t worry, it’s my money, and I’ll spend it how I like. Besides, I prefer dishes with more oil."
Hearing this, Chen Jinlan felt a bit guilty and didn’t stop Song Jiajia anymore.
After buying everything, Song Jiajia and Chen Jinlan went home together.
Song Jiajia gave the three sets of clothes bought from the market to Chen Jinlan.
Holding the clothes, Chen Jinlan looked at Song Jiajia in shock.
Song Jiajia smiled lightly and said: "I knew if I bought them for you, you wouldn’t take them. Now it’s settled, besides, they said no returns, so just wear them, don’t say anything about giving them to me. You know I don’t like dark-colored clothes. Moreover, these three sets are so old-fashioned, I wouldn’t wear them."
Chen Jinlan held the clothes, feeling a mix of emotions.
Her nose couldn’t help but tingle.
She should have expected it when Song Jiajia was looking at these clothes, knowing they were for her.
But she didn’t dare believe it, as the old Song Jiajia only took and rarely thought about giving.
She got used to it.
But now, Song Jiajia seemed changed, which made her feel gratified yet pained.
What kind of experiences must she have gone through to change like this; that process must have been really tough.
Song Jiajia held Chen Jinlan’s hand and sat on the bed: "Mom, can you sleep with me tonight?"
Chen Jinlan sniffed: "This bed is too small."
"Then I’ll sleep on the floor with you." Song Jiajia leaned on Chen Jinlan’s shoulder.
Chen Jinlan: "No, the floor is too cold; it’s not good for your health."
Song Jiajia: "I don’t care, I just want to sleep with you."
In the end, Chen Jinlan compromised, laying a thick cushion on the floor to try to prevent Song Jiajia from catching cold.
"Mom, I’m sorry." In the darkness, Song Jiajia suddenly said.
