A Bastard's Allure-Chapter 105: Things We Do For Love (2)
"Things we do for love!"
Gabriel cautiously approached the platform though he was certain this woman new he was here, and strangely he’d be coming for her.
His claws materialized, ready for an attack.
"There’s no need for that," she said without glancing at Gabriel’s direction. With precision, she gently washed Elena’s skin before dropping the clothing in the basin.
"She’s ready," she announced. Gabriel’s brows creased, his senses fully alert on each move she made. She turned to face him, her wrinkled face a testament of the aura lurking beneath her.
"Who are you?" Gabriel asked.
She smirked, wiping her hands with a dry towel. "Someone who owes your mother a favor," she replied. "I hope she’s worth the trouble," she added, glancing over at Elena’s body.
Gabriel was still cautious of her. He watched her cautiously as she walked about the room. Dressed in all black and a tiara resting on her head, one could tell she was a high rank demon.
"Tell Allicent," she said, standing close to the door. "The council is coming for both of you now that your existence is known."
"What council...?" Gabriel asked but the woman had already disappeared into thin air. Throwing caution to the wind, he walked towards where Elena’s body lay.
Her usually flawless skin was pale, her eyes shut upon the world. He caressed her face, the cold in her body seeping into his very bones. Her scent was no longer there, and either was her heartbeat.
"I’ll right this," he whispered, the guilt fresh in his golden eyes. Retracting his claws, he gathered her in his strong arms. She was slightly heavier compared to the last time he’d lifted her.
The hallways were still clear the moment he stepped outside. Did it have something to do with that woman he’d just encountered?
There wasn’t a single soul he spotted even in the stables. Even the stable boys were nowhere to be seen. Gabriel counted this as a miracle.
He chose a black mount and placed Elena’s body on top before he hopped on as well. The palace gates were open too, at the wee hours of the morning! But the streets of the capital were not empty!
Merchants crossed the results in a hurry to set up their stalls in a bid to be at par with the early birds. A woman opened the window from the third floor of a storey building and threw shit on the alley, nearly dropping it on Gabriel’s head.
The town was lively and a squadron of knights were patrolling the streets on this market day. A man carrying a dead body on horseback would sure arouse suspicion even from the crowd.
Gabriel pulled the reins to halt his mount on a desolate hallway. If he wanted to get out of this capital alive, he had to come up with a plan, a quick one at that.
He drew his hood close to his face and rested Elena’s body on his chest. God, she was so heavy! Her head hung low in defiance but he could do nothing about it. Picking a hood on a hanging line, he covered her pale face with it and gloved her hand.
The line was long in and out of Mysthaven. People had risen early to buy and sell. Carts and carriages were packed outside the gates making it hard to leave. And it was odd for anyone to leave the capital at this hour on a market day. 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺
Gabriel received casual glances from onlookers but none were concerned with his ’sleepy’ wife. Just a curious glance before they minded their own business.
With just a hood to hide his face, Gabriel realized he could be easily recognized. He looked around and saw a carriage coming his way, probably exiting the city as well.
Without wasting a minute, he took Elena’s body, still tightly wrapped and stepped into the carriage. Inside was a woman nursing a sickly babe judging from the wheezing sound it was producing. Their eyes met before they shifted to the person he was carrying.
"This line isn’t moving!" He heard the coachman complain. "How’s he faring?"
Gabriel brought his finger to his lips, indicating her to stay silent. He placed Elena’s body on the seat and removed the veil to reveal her face.
The woman gasped in surprise. "The princess!" She whispered in disbelief. "You’re stealing the princess’s body?" She asked in contempt, ready to unleash her new profound information to the world.
"Please listen to me," Gabriel said, trying to calm her down. But the woman was relentless on her mission to scream. Left with no other choice, Gabriel placed his hand over her mouth, his claws grazing over the human’s neck. The child wheezed and started crying.
"Everything alright back there?" The coachman asked, who was also the father of the child.
Gabriel leaned over and whispered into her ear, "Your mouth strays and you’re dead!" She nodded exaggeratingly before he let go of her.
"Everything’s fine," she choked the words out.
"Try breastfeeding him. Maybe he’ll stop crying," said the coachman. The woman did as instructed and the babe mellowed in her embrace.
Gabriel lowered his hood when the carriage started moving and sat opposite of the family. His eyes fell to the unmoving body of Elena.
"She was my wife you know," he said, his golden eyes settling into those of the woman. She on the other hand held her son strongly as if Gabriel would snatch it from him.
"I have to do this if I want her back. It’s the only chance I have and I can’t afford to ruin it."
"Bring her back... Resurrect her?" The woman asked, still clouded with uncertainty.
"I have to take her to this place for it to happen," he explained. "What’s his name?" He asked.
"Co... Collins," she replied.
"Fever?" She nodded faintly.
The carriage came to a sudden halt before Gabriel heard approaching footsteps.
"First one leaving the city today. What do we have in here?" He heard someone ask.
"Me and me wife. We’re traveling across the sea to visit the witch doctor in Althenia," replied the coachman.
"Mmh. Is that so?" The knight asked. His footsteps approached the carriage’s window before he took a peek inside.
