A Heaven-sent Sweet Child Falls Asking for Hugs-Chapter 112: Mommy, We’re Doomed
A single question was enough to send Beanie into a panic.
’Investigate?’
’How is Jasper Ford going to investigate?’
Beanie gulped and shook his head. "Don’t."
"Don’t what?" Jasper Ford asked pointedly, a knowing glint in his eyes.
Beanie said seriously, "Uncle Ford, what do you want to investigate?"
The man chuckled softly. "You’re both named Quincy. Why are you so close with Vivian Quincy? Beanie, did you two know each other before?"
"Nope," Beanie said, shaking his head. His wide, innocent eyes sparkled, filled with feigned confusion.
The boy wasn’t fooling him.
Jasper was suddenly intrigued. It wasn’t that he truly suspected Vivian Quincy of anything in particular. He had already run DNA tests on everyone connected to Beanie. He was certain that neither Wanda Quincy nor Anna was Beanie’s biological mother, and that Beanie had no blood ties to the Sawyer family. ’So maybe this Vivian Quincy...’
Jasper Ford stood up and said to Caden Chandler, "Go investigate Vivian Quincy."
"Uncle Ford," Beanie called out hastily.
Jasper Ford didn’t miss the panic in his eyes. The more Beanie feigned calmness, the more certain Jasper became that something was amiss.
Caden Chandler was perceptive. He didn’t need to be told twice. He turned and left.
Beanie then saw Caden Chandler take something from Vivian Quincy, but he couldn’t go out and stop him with Jasper there. Only when Jasper left for a meeting with several managers did the knot of tension in Beanie’s chest finally loosen.
Taking advantage of Jasper’s absence, Vivian Quincy slipped into the office. "Beanie, what did Caden Chandler and Jasper Ford say earlier?"
"Mommy, we’re doomed," Beanie said, looking up at her. His big, dark eyes were filled with anguish.
Vivian Quincy froze. "What do you mean, ’doomed’?"
"Uncle Ford is suspicious of us. He had Caden Chandler investigate you," Beanie explained, recounting everything that had just happened without leaving out a single detail.
The color drained from Vivian Quincy’s gorgeous face. "Why would he investigate me?" she asked seriously.
"He didn’t just investigate you. He also investigated Anna and Wanda Quincy. He said I’m not from the Sawyer family and I’m not related to Wanda Quincy, but then he remembered that you and I both have the same last name, so..." Beanie’s voice trailed off.
Vivian felt a headache coming on. She collapsed onto the sofa. "It’s over. When Caden Chandler came to see me earlier, it was to get a DNA sample, wasn’t it?"
Beanie said pitifully, "I wanted to warn you, but Uncle Ford kept me here talking, and I couldn’t get away. Mommy, what should we do? Do you think he’ll bully us for Wanda Quincy’s sake? Look at me, I’m just skin and bones. If he tries to hit you, I won’t be able to fight him off."
Vivian let out a snort of laughter, amused by the little guy. She couldn’t resist gently poking his forehead. "And how are you going to protect me with those little arms and legs?" she asked seriously.
"But what about Uncle Ford?" Beanie asked uneasily.
Vivian thought for a moment. "Well, we haven’t killed anyone or set anything on fire, and we certainly haven’t done anything immoral. Even if he finds out you’re my son, he wouldn’t be crazy enough to bully us, right?"
Based on her recent observations of Jasper Ford, Vivian figured that while he was unreasonable and certainly no saint, his attitude toward Wanda Quincy wasn’t much better. She was fairly certain that Jasper didn’t actually like Wanda.
Previously, Vivian had been worried that Wanda Quincy and Jasper Ford would team up to bully Beanie. But it seemed Jasper was actually quite good to the boy.
Jasper Ford’s office was very tidy. Documents were packed densely across his desk.
When she first started in the secretarial department, Jasper’s coffee table had also been buried under documents needing his review. But ever since Beanie appeared, it was always covered in food. Lots of it.
There were over a dozen kinds of snacks, and the fridge was even stocked with ice cream. Jasper Ford didn’t touch any of it. It was all prepared for Beanie.
When Jasper Ford returned from the conference room, he saw Vivian and Beanie sitting together. He said nothing and went back to his documents.
When it was time to clock out, Anna arrived right on schedule to take Beanie home. Jasper Ford didn’t stop them.
After Anna left, Vivian also gathered her things to leave, but Jasper Ford kept her behind.
Soon, everyone else had gone, leaving Vivian alone in the entire department.
She didn’t know what Jasper was thinking, but she didn’t dare to ask. She just waited outside his office for him to finish processing the documents on his desk.
It was already eight o’clock at night.
Vivian couldn’t wait any longer. She pushed open the office door. "Mr. F—ah!"
She had barely stepped inside when she collided with a hard, muscular chest.
Vivian let out a soft whimper of pain, clutching her throbbing nose as she took a step back.
The man’s brow furrowed at the sound of her soft, delicate whimper. A sudden wave of irritation washed over him. He hated it when Vivian made that sound. 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦
Jasper didn’t know why, but every time he heard Vivian make a sound like that, a strange discomfort spread through him.
The image of the birthmark on Beanie’s chest flashed through his mind. Jasper lowered his gaze to the woman standing so close to him. He reached out, seized her slender wrist, and asked in a low voice, "Vivian Quincy, you..."
"Mr. Ford, I need to go home," Vivian interrupted, looking up at him with her large, beautiful eyes.
Jasper was displeased. "I’m not done for the day."
"Huh?" Vivian blinked. "But my shift is over."
"You’re my personal assistant. You leave when I leave," Jasper said bluntly.
The phone in Vivian’s pocket started ringing incessantly. She pulled it out and glanced at the screen. "I really have to go."
Jasper glanced at Vivian’s phone. It was Hayden Kaye calling. The thought of the millions his foolish nephew had spent on her made him sneer. "Vivian Quincy, just how many men are you stringing along at once?"
The woman stiffened and looked up. "I don’t know what you’re talking about."
"You don’t?" Jasper sneered, his cool fingers brushing against her beautiful, red lips. After a moment, he let go. "Go on, then."
Visibly relieved, Vivian turned and hurried out.
She moved quickly and was downstairs in no time.
Hayden Kaye had been waiting outside for three hours. When he saw Vivian emerge, he happily opened his car door and rushed to greet her. "Vivian, over here!"
Still shaken from the encounter, Vivian said, "Hayden, you have to stop coming to see me."
"Why?" Hayden Kaye asked, confused.
"I’ll find a way to pay you back," Vivian said, "but we shouldn’t see each other again."
"I know what you’re worried about, and it’s okay. I’m not asking you to get back together with me right now. I just want to drive you home, that’s all. You don’t have to feel pressured." Hayden Kaye gently pulled Vivian into the car. He really was just offering her a ride home.
Vivian felt a pang of unease. She could see the pain Hayden was holding back in his eyes and felt a deep sense of guilt, but she had nothing to offer him.
’If this keeps up, we’ll both just end up in pain.’
Vivian bit her lip and glanced out the window, only to see Jasper Ford’s car parked across the street. He was sitting inside, watching her...
