A Heaven-sent Sweet Child Falls Asking for Hugs-Chapter 6: Isn’t the Child His?
Beads of sweat trickled down Vivian Quincy’s fair, beautiful forehead. Her delicate, weak body was as hot as a furnace. She bit down hard on her pretty red lips and repeated, "Don’t touch me!"
The words had barely left her lips when the young woman’s eyes rolled back in her head, and she fainted.
When she came to again, she was in a hospital. Sitting by her bed was her ex-boyfriend, Hayden Kaye.
He sat on the chair with a resentful expression, an indescribable sorrow in his eyes.
"You’re awake?" he asked softly as Vivian Quincy opened her eyes.
Vivian Quincy sat up slowly, one hand on her forehead. The flush on her pretty face had faded back to its normal color. Leaning against the headboard, she glanced down at her clothes. They were intact...
Hayden Kaye noticed her subtle movement and said in a low voice, "I went to your family’s home."
"We broke up," Vivian Quincy said, cutting him off before he could finish what he wanted to say. She looked up, meeting his shocked gaze. "We shouldn’t see each other anymore."
Hayden Kaye let out a self-deprecating laugh. "So, have you just been playing me for a fool all these years?"
"I haven’t," Vivian Quincy said, shaking her head.
Hayden Kaye shot to his feet in anger. "Then why did you hide from me for six years without coming back? What did I do wrong? Why do you want to break up with me? Did you ever even love me?"
Vivian Quincy’s hands clutched the blanket. After a long silence, she finally spoke softly. "I did before. But things change, and people change. You can feel it too. I don’t need you anymore. So let’s just break up."
"Is it because of him?" Hayden Kaye demanded, suppressing the jealousy in his heart.
Vivian Quincy froze for a moment. "Him?"
Knowing Vivian Quincy’s personality, Hayden Kaye said nothing more. He simply brought out a large suitcase, opened it, and revealed it was full of cash.
Vivian Quincy frowned. "What is the meaning of this?"
"Leave him, give the child back, and come with me," Hayden Kaye said sternly.
Vivian Quincy was stunned by his sudden words. ’Didn’t I just make myself perfectly clear? Did Hayden not understand?’
"Vivian, President King is a married man with a family. You don’t have to throw away the rest of your life on him. If you really can’t bear to part with his child, I..." Hayden’s voice trailed off. There was no doubt about it; he couldn’t accept a stranger’s child.
Complex and painful emotions swirled in Hayden Kaye’s heart. He gazed at the face he had longed for for over two thousand days and nights. After a long, long time, he finally made up his mind. "If you can’t bear to part with the child, I can help you raise him. But you... you can’t leave me again."
"Who told you Beanie is President King’s son?" Vivian Quincy asked, confused.
"Isn’t he? Back then, weren’t you with him...?" Hayden trailed off, unable to finish.
Vivian Quincy threw back the covers and got out of bed. Without even a glance at the money on the table, she shut the suitcase. "I’ll raise my own child. We’re over. Don’t come looking for me again. You saved me last night, so thank you for that."
With that, Vivian Quincy turned and left.
’This is how the relationship ends, then.’
’She didn’t need anyone’s pity, and no one had the right to take Beanie away from her!’
Vivian Quincy walked away so quickly that she couldn’t hear what Hayden Kaye said after her. The first thing she did after leaving the hospital was go to the Quincy residence to find Beanie Quincy.
Wanda Quincy wasn’t home, and Fiona Hughes was nowhere to be found. The Quincy family’s servants were busy dealing with a warehouse that Beanie Quincy had set on fire. When Vivian Quincy came looking for him, hardly anyone paid her any attention, assuming she was just a local resident who had come to gawk at the commotion. 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞
Vivian Quincy breathed a sigh of relief upon learning that Beanie Quincy had escaped, but her relief quickly turned to anxiety. Beanie was so young and new to the city—where could he have run off to?
Vivian Quincy borrowed a passerby’s phone and dialed Beanie’s number. It connected after a moment, and a kind-sounding woman’s voice answered. Vivian couldn’t help but glance at the phone number again to confirm it was indeed Beanie Quincy’s.
"Hello, Mommy?" a small, squeaky voice suddenly came from the phone.
Vivian Quincy’s heart leaped with joy. "Beanie? Where are you?"
"Beanie is at a very nice old lady’s house," Beanie said, his voice lively and cheerful.
Vivian Quincy said, "What old lady? Tell me your exact location, and I’ll come pick you up."
"I’m in Prosperity District. Don’t worry, Mommy. The old lady is a good person, and she’s really nice to me. She’s not home right now. If you pick me up, she’ll be very sad," Beanie explained in a small, soft voice.
Hearing that the woman was a good person, Vivian Quincy breathed another sigh of relief. "Alright then. You can stay there for a couple of days. Mommy will come get you after I find a job."
"Okay!" Beanie agreed obediently.
Vivian Quincy returned the phone to the passerby, thanked them, and left. Her luggage and phone were still at the hotel. Fortunately, Wanda Quincy’s people had left after she’d escaped, so Vivian was able to retrieve her belongings and check out without any trouble.
"Did you hear? Ninth Master Ford was attacked last night."
"Oh my god, who did it? Who would be so bold?"
"Ninth Master Ford took the security footage, so no one knows who it was. But he was furious when he left. I bet the attacker is totally screwed!"
Holding her checkout deposit, Vivian Quincy’s hand trembled.
The front desk clerk smiled and said, "Miss, you’re about to drop your money."
"Oh," Vivian Quincy mumbled, grabbing her luggage and leaving in a hurry.
She had come to Crestfall with two goals in mind. The first was to find out who the man from six years ago was. The second was for an interview; half a month ago, she had applied for a planner position at the Imperium Group.
She rented an apartment near the Imperium Group headquarters. That afternoon, Vivian Quincy changed her clothes and went to her interview at the company. Everything went very smoothly, but she had no idea that someone was already watching her.
In the president’s office, Caden Chandler had been holding back laughter all morning. Watching his boss nearly crumple Vivian Quincy’s resume into a ball, he almost gave himself an internal injury from the effort.
’This Vivian Quincy woman sure has some nerve!’
’Beating up the boss and running off was one thing, but to actually dare to apply for a job at his company!’
’Is she banking on the boss being too proud to publicize what happened last night?!’
"President, should I go deal with her?" Caden Chandler asked.
Jasper Ford’s eyes were unreadable. He coldly tossed the resume into the trash can and uttered two frigid words: "No need."
"Then..." Caden Chandler trailed off, confused.
Jasper Ford said, "Since she’s here, there’s no reason to let her go. However, the planner position really isn’t suitable for her. Tell HR to have her start from the bottom in the warehouse. And then..."
A faint, cold smile played on Jasper Ford’s lips.
Vivian Quincy, who had been waiting for news, was thoroughly dejected when she learned she had been hired as a warehouse stocker.
The manager, afraid Vivian Quincy would run off, quickly tried to placate her. "All the upper management at our company started from the bottom. With your qualifications, Miss Quincy, once you’re in, you’ll be made a permanent employee in a month, get a raise in three, and be promoted to manager in five—it’s practically a guarantee! Besides, our salary is very high, double what other companies offer. Please stay. We need talent like you!"
