A Hospital in Another World?-Chapter 578: You Are the Worst Batch I’ve Ever Taught
Garrett was extremely frustrated.
Garrett was even a bit irritable.
Garrett began to doubt life itself.
Was it just an ultrasound? Just an ECG? Just a blood test? Just a bunch of level 1, some even trick-level, minor magics?
Why couldn’t they learn?
He had taught these spells to the students in Nevis and the necromancers assisting in the hospital and didn’t think it was that difficult. Throw out the spell model, mention a few reference magics, and after a few practices, the students naturally got it—
And then, as long as one person knew how to do it, it spread from person to person, self-propagating. He didn’t even need to bother teaching; it just took care of itself.
But what about here?
I won’t even mention the level 1 and 2 casters, some here are level 3, 4, even 5! Four to five days and you can’t learn even a basic spell?
Garrett thought about it and felt maybe he was being too harsh on his students. He consulted with a few of the leaders and divided the casters into four groups:
One for ultrasound, one for ECG, one for blood tests, and one for blood pressure. Based on previous learning progress, they signed up voluntarily and formed groups freely.
Ah, of course, how each sect’s bigwigs assigned tasks, Garrett didn’t interfere…
Once assignments were done, they took a short break. Service staff brought in a large number of experimental animals, distributing them to the groups based on the spells they were learning. Some received sheep, others rabbits, and some dogs…
Well, most of the expenses were covered by the Temple of the War God, a small part by the Temple of Spring Waters. As for the Church of Nature, Garrett was their patron!
He shamelessly used the teaching funds, with no guilt whatsoever!
After the animals were distributed, Garrett started teaching group by group. First was the ultrasound group, which he thought was the simplest:
The basis was an existing spell, just needed a little tweaking. The students at Nevis Hospital, on average, could see the organs clearly after killing about a dozen rabbits.
Of course, reading the results, that was another matter…
But what about in Hartland City? Several days since the materials were sent out, and not one person could do it!
"Not even with soundwave detection? Haven’t you learned 【Echo Detection】?"
"Never learned it!"
Led by Priest Anthony, a group of healers shook their heads in unison. Fine, priests, not mages, their learning paths and skills might naturally differ?
Garrett pressed his temple, turned his head, and looked at Mage Carl. In three years, Carl had progressed from level 3 to level 4, rated by Mage Gelman as average. A level 4 mage, learning ultrasound magic, shouldn’t be that hard, right?
Mage Carl silently raised his hand:
"【Echo Detection】I’ve learned, but I can’t manage to detect inside the body, I’ve been practicing for several days without success…"
Ah, Garrett knew where the problem was. He dragged over a blackboard and, with Mage Hand, picked up a piece of chalk and began drawing the spell structure:
"Look, there’s a function curve, it’s like this and that… Adjust this value when you release the spell, and you can control the frequency of the ultrasound…"
Structure, curve, algorithm. From top to bottom, from left to right, he filled a blackboard, then turned around:
"Understand?"
"…"
Wherever his gaze fell, Carl’s head was bobbing up and down like a pecking chicken: look at the blackboard, copy a few characters, look again, copy more.
Seeing his nodding speed, Garrett had a bad feeling:
You don’t even recognize the formulas?
On closer inspection, indeed, Carl had only copied half the formula and had already made two errors.
"Uh… you need to correct this… this symbol goes on top…"
Garrett watched him correct his notes. Explaining the formulas wasn’t something to be done in a short while; he’d have to postpone it:
"Never mind, just follow Mage Carl and learn 【Echo Detection】 for now, and practice slowly with animals. When you can clearly see the organs and the animals don’t bleed, then compare it to the illustrations for humans!"
Garrett shook his head and sighed, moving to the blood test group. In the blood test group, a bald bishop personally took charge, pulling a bunch of warriors to serve as his laborers. Garrett welcomed this:
Soldiers on the battlefield, who need blood transfusions, naturally have a higher probability than ordinary people. Even if the warriors couldn’t learn the magic, at least they
would know what to do when a transfusion was needed.
However, problems arose from the very first step of drawing blood:
"Disinfect! Disinfect! At least disinfect! Your big arm is all muddy, can you scrub it clean first?"
"Don’t jab the needle randomly!... Once it’s in deep enough, keep the angle level... Ah, now you’ve punctured both sides?"
"Just let it sit for a moment. If you want to separate the serum quickly, you can use a centrifuge... Wait, what kind of centrifuging is that? Strongman spinning?!"
As one problem was resolved, another emerged. Garrett had no choice but to distribute a set of syringes to them to practice on animals:
Rabbits are too small, dogs too fierce, cows too large. So, get a few sheep, one leg per person!
Garrett huffed and puffed, teaching them one by one, exhausted to the point of nearly spitting out his tongue. And it wasn’t over yet, after teaching blood drawing, he still had to teach them cross-matching, and after that, the blood test magic:
"It’s just a simplified version of 【Identify Bloodline】! Have you learned 【Identify Bloodline】?"
"Learned it, but…"
Forget it, even if they couldn’t learn the blood test magic, cross-matching could still be makeshift. However, the cross-matching was even more of a farce:
"First dilute! Dilute! Dilute then drip it in!"
"Take the red cells and immerse them at the bottom of the serum! Don’t suck up the serum too!—Don’t shake your hand! Don’t shake! Don’t touch the walls of the test tube!"
"Oh, why did you poke with such force? I’ve never seen anyone puncture the bottom of a test tube like that!"
Teaching these students, Garrett felt his blood pressure rise several tens of mmHg. He barely led them through the process, watching the bald bishop write down every detail of the procedure, sighing deeply, and heading to the next group:
The ECG group.
This group had the most problems. Mage Gelman, Mage Elliott, and a few higher-level priests were all in this group. Seeing Garrett approach, Elliott looked like he had seen a savior and immediately rushed up:
"Garrett! This ECG, how do you do it? Why does the cloud screen light up? Why does it display lines?"
When Elliott first met Garrett, he was already a level 2 mage. During the dysentery epidemic, thanks to Garrett’s help with a microscope to peek into the microscopic world, he advanced to a level 3 mage. The two had always had a good relationship.
Up to now, Elliott had been stuck at the threshold from level 4 to 5 for two years. So when Garrett started teaching new magic, he eagerly came running:
Maybe learning something new could give him insights to cross this threshold? Even if not, spending ten days to half a month to learn a few new spells was still worth it!
He eagerly awaited Garrett’s explanation. Garrett, wiping sweat:
Can I tell you I still haven’t figured it out myself? I can only guess, this cloud screen is similar to the mechanism of an atrium, high-energy particles pass through, naturally causing fluctuations?
Or, could I tell you that this magic was modified for me by the dragons?
"Just release it as I demonstrated!" he reluctantly answered:
"Not every spell knows why it works! You, do you understand the principles behind every spell you’ve learned?"
"Oh…"
Elliott instantly wilted. Rote memorization, he hated rote memorization the most!
Excluding the principles of magic, there was still something he couldn’t figure out. And this was also what hindered him from casting the ECG spell, the biggest obstacle:
"Why when I release the cloud screen, is there so much noise? The lines are a tangled mess, impossible to read!"
Garrett had no answer for this, only letting him cast one to see. A warrior was summoned to be the subject, his upper body bared to facilitate finding points. Elliott concentrated, probes dropping one by one:
"Look—"
Garrett rubbed his forehead. Honestly, he had never seen such a messy ECG; the P wave wasn’t a P wave, the T wave wasn’t a T wave, all twisted like a ball of yarn played with by a cat.
He sensed with his psychic energy for a long while and couldn’t figure it out. Suddenly an idea struck, and he slapped an 【Mechanized Mind】 on Elliott’s face:
"See, isn’t that better?"
The lines on the cloud screen instantly became orderly. Garrett was about to explain when a scream suddenly pierced the sky from the right side:
"Ahhh—"
What’s happening?
Garrett turned his head and immediately felt his blood pressure skyrocket, blood spurting through his crown.
Where he looked, a fountain of blood sprayed toward the ceiling on the right side of the hall:
"What are you doing?"
Garrett dashed over. Squeezing through the crowd, he instantly became furious:
Five or six priests surrounded a goat, hands flailing, indiscriminately casting healing spells, unable to stop the gushing blood from its neck. Lying on a nearby table was a needle, from the needle, the tubing, to the nearby mercury column, all splattered red.
"Press down on the artery! Press down first!"
Garrett dove in, found the artery near the heart on the goat’s neck, pressed down accurately, and cast a healing spell. This time, just a basic minimally invasive healing spell was enough to stem the blood flow from the goat’s neck:
"When doing invasive blood pressure monitoring, you have to press down near the heart before removing the blood pressure gauge! Press before you pull! You don’t even know the basics and you dare to mess with arteries!"
You really are the worst batch I’ve ever taught… What kind of problems don’t you have, what kind of mess can’t you create!
